  4. I'm new, I'm learning mandolin. I enjoy the old folk songs. Christian Folk too, like "I'll fly Away." I adapt some while learning and it helps. My voice is pretty bad, and my playing is too! I'm learning though. I wrote a couple doing chords, but i can pick some like "Amazin grace," and "Down in the Valley" Which I adapted and made the song relatable to me. One version has it about a guy in jail, so i made it about a soldier. I got two originals at this time and point, "Dirty Blue Collar" and "The Sickness." I'll record them at home and strum the mandolin. I'll write a chord sheet and lyrics too and save them. I hope to have 20 like within a year or so. Then I'll fine tune them. Maybe some as I go. I'm learning other songs. Like "I'll fly away" and "Handsome Molly." taking lessons when I can as well. It's slow going, but I know more than I did before! I'd like to post some songs, maybe Ya'll can hear my potential.
  5. Hello everyone! I would like to introduce myself. I am a songwriter, originally from California, but living in Iowa (USA) now for many years. I am a music lover, for sure, and for that reason writing songs seemed a natural extension of my interests. I am not much of a musician/performer. I play around on the piano and can write a score on the computer that is adequate for an arranger to get the drift of what I am trying to convey. I grew up in a musical family, with both grandmothers piano teachers, and one of them also a cellist. So classical music is in my DNA, as well as jazz, and retro rock (70s and earlier). I am a latecomer to country music, although I appreciate the mature emotional depth that country can unleash. I have also been a fan of serious sacred music and some popular music over the decades, especially musical theater. I started writing songs to put in a series of full-length musicals that I wrote, set in different decades in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. This gave me license to write songs in a variety of genres, for a variety of voices, duets, and ensembles. Many of those songs are stand-alone songs that I have since had recorded. I do not do my own recordings, but instead send my music to a studio in Nashville for arranging, performance, and recording. If you would like to listen to some of my music, here are links to my first two albums containing a variety of genres: pop, country, folk, blues, rock, and jazz.
  6. Hello gang, I know most people cover this song with a Guitar (for a good reason), but here's my attempt to make it work for a solo keyboard/piano. I hope I was able to capture the mood and character of the song properly.

I've learned different kinds of music instruments like piano, the arabic oud, the turkish baglama etc. These days I'm working on electronic music and I'm trying to get fretless guitar lessons. 10. Hello guys, I am a Brazilian lyricist, I have several songs made with friends from around the world and besides them I need more opinions about my lyrics. This is the only way I have to improve in my day to day life. A friend who has been around for a long time was the one who indicated me this site, I hope to make friends, get collaborations and who knows how to help someone on some project. I ask for a little patience because I do not speak English and my lyrics are translated by other people. Hugs! Edson Brasil de Castro

  14. If I wanted to use the overused blues riff made famous by the likes of Muddy Waters on Hoochie Coochie man, Bad to the Bone, and plenty others. Is using this copyright infringment? It is used in blues from long ago and not sure what the law is on this. I want to take this and put all new music behind it but still have this style. The start and stop slow style. Any information would be helpful.
  15. I took a different approach on this one. I took the elements of the storm and made it into a song about a relationship that ended badly. I took what the picture reminded me of and made it about a person. So at first it seems like it's talking about a storm, but then you realize he or she was the storm. THE Aftermath of You- By Amy Abernathy 2014 Wind engulfs the terrain, as a blanket on a bed. Isolation and absence of life no words said. The vitality was sucked up by a powerful wave. Crashing, Thrashing and destroying the love we gave. Winds severed the power lines like a giant pair of scissors. The love that once grew now has fizzled. Leaving only polluted waters where a love once grew. Waves Crashing in, leaving disaster of what we knew. Chorus: If you don’t think you hit me like a storm, Then baby just look at the debris. My hearts in tiny pieces and you have broken me. Now I’m living in the wreckage and the aftermath of you. Like a hurricane you knocked me down and crushed my heart into. Now I’m living in the wreckage and aftermath of you. Now we are lifeless and in a brutal storm’s path. Has love ever known such a furious wrath? I thought through the rubble, we’d find hope, Now everything’s flooded with no life rope. The tsunami of emotions has flooded my mind, My hearts been broke down slammed around and left behind. I thought we were built on a house made of stone. Now we are lifeless and I’m here all alone. I don’t know how I’ll do it, Don’t know how to make it through, How can I survive the aftermath of you? Chorus: If you don’t think you hit me like a storm, Then baby just look at the debris. My hearts in tiny pieces and you have broken me. Now I’m living in the wreckage and the aftermath of you. Like a hurricane you knocked me down and crushed my heart into. Now I’m living in the wreckage and aftermath of you.

  19. I picked up my new (old) guitar at the Guitar Workshop and strummed it a few times and felt great about the new strings and adjustments and excited once again about playing and developing some new songs. These silk and steel strings sound great and with this 3/4 guitar I can recover the standard C chord. As someone, said,"The C chord's pretty important." You can tell by now that I am not a great guitar player; I am a lyricist and singer. Yet, I love to play guitar, when I can make it sound decent. My style is country-folk-blues, the themes of my songs are social justice, poverty-homelessness, nature, relationships, spirituality, personal growth. I was born and raised in the South, but also lived in New England 20 years. So I have been exposed to a variety of styles and mental sets. In addition to songwriting, I write prose-poetry and essays on creativity, personal growth and politics. I love a variety of musical artists, country, rock, blues, etc. Lately, I have been playing a lot of Bon Jovi. I went through a strong Ronnie Van Zant phase a few years ago. There are certain songs I latch on to and play over and over till the CD wears out, like "Collide," by Howie Day,"It's My Life," by Bon Jovi, "Born to Run," by Springsteen. There is a saying by Pat Conroy,"Without music, life is a journey through a desert." I subscribe to that saying. Music keeps my spirit alive, when I feel like i am slowly dying inside. It provides an avenue for deep reflection on the past, as well exploration of the present and a way to envision the future. I love to play out at an open mic at a cafe in Hendersonville, North Carolina called the ugly mug/ This is a tiny venue. You play to maybe 20 people but some great artists show up. What makes it great is the diversity: folk, country, blues, bluegrass, rock. Mountain folk, Southern folk, black, white, young, old. The variety of people makes the setting dynamic. I play-sing originals and covers. As far as songwriting is concerned, I have about 50 songs. I have shared some of them at the ugly Mug, and plan share more. Some people regard performance at a small venue like that as trivial or insignificant. In my view, it is far from that. It's a magic time at the Ugly Mug on a Wednesday night. I am always looking for opportunities to collaborate with other songwriters. Strong lyrics, a good voice, not a great composer or guitar player--that's me. But I feel good about my work. And i believe in music.
  20. My name is Chris as i stated in the topic and i am 35yrs OLD from Texas. I'm a christian-country-bluesish-folkish singer/songwriter, i play guitar, and I draw and paint some. I come from a musical family. i started playing guitar when i was 15 then got married at 18 and for some reason guitar got put on the back burner for a long time( been married 16yrs now ) so i am not anywhere near as far along as i should be. I did finally get up the nerve to enter a songwriting contest and won! yeah me! It was small, about 30 entrants and $150 grand prize, but it felt good. I am kinda in a band, hard to explain. This is my first forum ever. I have recorded one song kind of professionally, the guy who produced it was a pro and he did it for free. any whooo i could go on and on and on and on, but i will spare u any more blah blah blah
  21. Hi to all, I am a country-folk-blues singer-songwriter from Asheville, NC. Also a poet-essayist and advocate for the poor, with a teaching and counseling background. I am always looking for songwriting collaboration opportunities. Having been raised in the South, but also lived in New England 20 years, hence I have been exposed to a variety of musical influences. I play out at an open mic in hendersonville, NC that features a great variety of Southern-mountain, folk, country and bluegrass, as well as blues and rock. I am much stronger as a lyricist but I sing well. I play a 3/4 acoustic guitar with silk and steel strongs. I am basically a baby boomer who strives to stay up with the current array of talented artists, though I am picky. I look forward to participating here. Patrick F.
  22. Hello I'm Uncle Diesel (Mike) I'm from NH, I've been writing lyrics all my life and I have accumulated over a 1000 songs , I feel that 10 are solid song's with lots of potential. Lately to satisfy my never ending need to write, I started to write parody's (mostly sport's parody's) about Local New England Teams. I've had success getting on several radio shows in The Boston area, The Sports Hub 98.5 to name one. I enjoy the Parody song creation , but I really feel I have so much more to give. I need a Musician that I can collaborate with, and take there music and join My lyrics into. I want to work as a 50/50 team, and together find that diamond in the ruff that just might be there. I'm not a great singer but I'm good enough to convey the emotional substance of the song.I just want to write the words. I'm looking for Rock or Blue's music. If anyone want's to give it a shot, E mail me at( unclediesel2@gmail.com ) Thank You, Uncle Diesel (Mike)
