  1. I'm new, I'm learning mandolin. I enjoy the old folk songs. Christian Folk too, like "I'll fly Away." I adapt some while learning and it helps. My voice is pretty bad, and my playing is too! I'm learning though. I wrote a couple doing chords, but i can pick some like "Amazin grace," and "Down in the Valley" Which I adapted and made the song relatable to me. One version has it about a guy in jail, so i made it about a soldier. I got two originals at this time and point, "Dirty Blue Collar" and "The Sickness." I'll record them at home and strum the mandolin. I'll write a chord sheet and lyrics too and save them. I hope to have 20 like within a year or so. Then I'll fine tune them. Maybe some as I go. I'm learning other songs. Like "I'll fly away" and "Handsome Molly." taking lessons when I can as well. It's slow going, but I know more than I did before! I'd like to post some songs, maybe Ya'll can hear my potential.
  2. Hello everyone! I would like to introduce myself. I am a songwriter, originally from California, but living in Iowa (USA) now for many years. I am a music lover, for sure, and for that reason writing songs seemed a natural extension of my interests. I am not much of a musician/performer. I play around on the piano and can write a score on the computer that is adequate for an arranger to get the drift of what I am trying to convey. I grew up in a musical family, with both grandmothers piano teachers, and one of them also a cellist. So classical music is in my DNA, as well as jazz, and retro rock (70s and earlier). I am a latecomer to country music, although I appreciate the mature emotional depth that country can unleash. I have also been a fan of serious sacred music and some popular music over the decades, especially musical theater. I started writing songs to put in a series of full-length musicals that I wrote, set in different decades in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. This gave me license to write songs in a variety of genres, for a variety of voices, duets, and ensembles. Many of those songs are stand-alone songs that I have since had recorded. I do not do my own recordings, but instead send my music to a studio in Nashville for arranging, performance, and recording. If you would like to listen to some of my music, here are links to my first two albums containing a variety of genres: pop, country, folk, blues, rock, and jazz.
  3. 4. Howdy fellow songwriters!! Let's face it.. some of us are good with words, some are good with melodies/ arranging, &/ or generating memorable beats, and some have amazing vocal talent. As for "Dem der fancy words" I used in the tags, this is what I meant; though my own definitions might differ quite a bit from good ol' Mr. Webster (the guy who wrote one of the most famous dictionaries). Synergy: Not everyone is good at everything. The classical definition of synergy basically means that "The sum of the worth or value of the parts exceeds that of the whole." While I can create a half decent simple melody I suck at choosing the right "colorful" chords and counter-melodies necessary to produce great music. Likewise, my "skills" as a percussionist are laughable. Next.. Serendipity: Call it good fortune, luck.. whatever. Sometimes things work out to our advantage .. just because! And we don't even know why.. If we consider the odds of having more "good fortune" or even the possibility or probability of "having good stuff fall in our laps".. the chances of having this happen tend to increase when we work cooperatively on a project as a cooperative team or "think tank". Finally - synchronicity, or.. the way stuff fits together. Ever been working on a puzzle.. you've agonized where a piece goes for what seems like forever to you, just to have someone walk up and drop it EXACTLY where it needed to be?? Songwriting can be like that, whether you're composing or lyric authoring. Sometimes it's nice to have a 2nd (even a 3rd!) brain to create just the right lyric, beat, chord, hook, chord progression.. whatever. Besides, it's best to have a smaller piece of a BIG pie rather than a whole pie that is tiny, now isn't it? Let me know if you agree with this crazy, eclectic and creative olde pharte and want to give it a go on some projects with him. Looking forward to working with some of you amazing, great, imaginative, creative people - especially artists/ groups, composers, music producers and music arrangers. See y'all at the Grammies! <)8√D SWJ
  5. Hello all. I'm a songwriter that primarily writes in the country/rock genre but can write others. That's just where I find myself more gravitating towards. I look forward to receiving and giving feedback. Thank you!
  6. So yeah this is about an unrequited love that you're always there for and pray one day they realize you're there as more than just a friend cause you are tired of seeing them continually broken.. When it's all said an done When they've all had their fun I'm the one who's left With all the pieces to pick up I put you back together Make you whole once more Give you back your confidence Still it's someone else you keep falling for... Chorus If you would take my hand Give our love a fighting chance Promise I'll treat you better than he can But you still look at me.... as just a friend Verse 2 When we go out together Are you even aware That everyone looks at us Like we're the perfect pair I make you laugh make you smile A shoulder when you need to cry Hate late nights going home all alone Hoping one day you'll realize We belong together should be you an I Bridge I wish you could see The one you're looking for is me I've been right here all the time Just waiting for my chance to shine
  7. As some of you know, I’ve been experimenting with genres recently but I always seem to get drawn back to country! Anyway, this is a couple of my latest tracks - as far as I can go - finished. I think they are pretty good but probably not up to the pro standard for showcase. I’ve listed it here for general reaction (as opposed to crtique or I would’ve posted it there). Vocally I know there’s still some to be desired which I can only work on, but I think the tracks are pretty good since my first attempts at songs when I first joined... as I said, from my perspective, finished. Thanks for listening 😀 A Drink or Two © Darren Thomas 2017 I can remember when things were really good I try to forget but don’t know if I should I can hear the words we said and see the things we did And if I’m honest I still miss you just a little bit I’m not sure what else I can do So I’ll just sit here thinking of you Over a drink or two Maybe I’ll have a few I’m stronger now than you ever thought I was I found my way back from lost in the world of Oz I’m not sure if the pain will ever go away But I’m pretty certain I’ll live through another day And I’m not sure what else I can do So I’ll just sit here thinking of you Over a drink or two Maybe I’ll have a few At one point you were my world And I know I said some things that hurt But the memories maketh the man So I carry on the best I can And now you’re becoming a distant memory These fading thoughts are finally setting me free But there are times when echoes they come back But I’m determined that they won’t knock me off my track And I’m not sure what else I can do So I’ll just sit here thinking of you Over a drink or two No I’m not sure what else I can do So I’ll just sit here thinking of you Over a drink or two Because of You © Darren Thomas 2017 I’ve had my share of heartbreak But I’ve known love and success I’ve been at the very bottom But I crawled out of that mess Survived on my own at times And I’ve shared good memories Lived through my own failures And been carried on the breeze But I know for sure As sure as you do That I was put on this earth Because of you I’ve made mistakes along the way Hurt more people than I can say There’s times that I didn’t know what to do But all of those times I’ve been there for you I’ve been a leader of men But I’ve also had to follow At times this road was hard I’ve had to beg and steal and borrow But I know, for sure As sure as you do That I was put on this earth Because of you I crawled out of the mess I’ve been a leader of men Survived on my own But this is now and that was then But I know, for sure As sure as you do That I was put on this earth Because of you Because of you Yeahhhhhh Because of you
  8. "Hey, can you come play my party for free beer?!" "If you come play guitar for me for $50 this time there will be more gigs to follow!" "Do you have some unlicensed or royalty free music I can use for my video?" "I can pay you in (insert social media platform) more followers if you do this for me." Knowing one's value or worth is the best advice I could ever give anybody wanting to jump in this crazy music industry...OK, the end!! Whew, thank goodness you don't have to read anymore! Seems so simple, right? Monetarily speaking, knowing your worth can be an incredible advantage to your career, or not knowing what your "product's" value is can be a horrible disservice to you and your fellow colleagues. This is what I mean. What we do in the music industry whether it be a song writer, jingle composer, player, artist, manager, booking agent, etc. is entirely different than any corporate structure set in any other genre of business. There is no infrastructure to evaluate how much you should be making on a global scale. There isn't a chart on the internet to tell you how much you should be making. That certainly would make it a lot easier. From what I've learned, culture and the city you live in seem to set a standard. Granted I can only speak as an American understanding the evaluation process in music. Los Angles, New York, and Nashville are what I call the big 3. From there I would say the next tier cities could be an Austin, Texas or a New Orleans, Louisiana for example. But the big three usually set the trends in the largest commercialized music markets (Pop, Rock, and Country). They also have more opportunities in all areas of music as well. How much should I charge for my services? It all depends on your culture, city, and what will you gain out of it. In Nashville, a guitar player hired to play some songs have a pretty standard base rate of a local show getting paid $150 and if there is travel involved no less than $200. But I've excepted gigs for a lot less. Even $50! In corporate business suit and tie world they would ridicule you for taking a 75% cut. I don't blame them. Let that percentage sink in. I didn't know what I was doing was undermining a system that would devalue and under appreciate a player that would be well deserved of a base pay of $150. Integrity in the market place is a concept that , in monetary terms, people will know what to expect. Consistency if you will and it even sets a bar predicated to a system that can establish tiers. For example, do those local shows for $150 and when you have the street credit eventually you can make the jump up to $200, then $225, and then so on, and so on!!! Your culture may have something set in place. Maybe? Maybe not? Isn't it funny? Do you ever wonder if somebody slapped a sign on your back that says "will work for free" instead of "kick me!" Know your worth. Set a standard. Educate yourself from other musicians/writers/engineers/blah/blah/ bah. Let those that have walked that path mentor you. Help your community by establishing that your vocation as a creative is important to be worth given money. I had a coffee with a friend when I first started traveling to Nashville. I expressed that I didn't know my value or even when should I take a gig. I still use this rule to this day and I absolutely love it, and I think it applies here. After he mentioned base rates in Nashville he ended the subject by saying, "Two out of three ain't bad." 1. Is the money good? 2. Do you like the music? 3. Are they good people or are they fun to hang out with? "If you can say yes to at least two of those...two out of three ain't bad."
  9. My name is Michael Black. I was born and raised in New Jersey and I've always enjoyed song writing. Recently I've been writing country music songs and then I wrote my first rap song back in 2016 dedicated and inspired by my son who had some rough experiences in the early stages of his life. I consider myself to be a true story lyric writer so I base all my lyrics off my experiences or the others around me. I can't begin to say how thrilled I am to be able to have my songs produced.
  10. Hi! If you enjoy my cover, thumbs up or subscribe please
  11. Hi, I'm new on here, but I think you all know that. My name is Wesley, I love to write lyrics. I'm dumb with music, but I think I can write good lyrics ( even my mom said they are good, LOL) I mostly write country and slow rock songs. Giddy up and hang on.
  12. Hello, My name is Jim Chalker. I live in the United States, in southern Ohio near Cincinnati, though I was born in Aruba and have lived in The Netherlands, Florida, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, and Virginia (plus a little time in California if you count military service). I am about to turn 62, and have been trying to write songs since my 20s. In my earlier years I wrote whole compositions. But lately I have been finding it ever more difficult to come up with melodies. I don’t think I was ever particularly good at them anyway. Nonetheless, I feel like I am coming into my own as a lyricist. My lyrics are fairly explicit as opposed to abstract and therefore probably suited to country music more than most other genres. But my favorite music is southern rock. I would love to connect with a melody writer or writers who can appreciate my work and put it to good tunes. I don’t play much myself, though I used to play guitar. Fingers don’t work all that well these days. So I can give you lyrics from which to write. If you need to adjust the rhythm I can work with you on that. I will be happy to share samples with anyone. I might even suggest some musical phrases or even tunes as a starting point from time to time. I will probably never make a living at this because I am not a writing machine. You can’t sit me down and say, “Write a song about such and such.” Lyrics come to me from wherever and whenever. When they do I write. As I say, I can adjust to fit someone’s melody. But any collaboration would likely be occasional and perhaps spontaneous. I will be posting some of my stuff in the proper forums, only copyrighted materials. I have recorded a few demos, only one of quality. Actually I get people to record for me. My one quality demo was done by a Grammy winning musician, Clay Hess. He did a nice job on my song and was easy to work with. What I hope to get out of Songstuff would be to see something I wrote just be good enough to be heard and recorded in professional music circles, to have a song perhaps on the radio that I could point to and say, “I had a part in writing that.” I suppose that’s a pretty common desire among songwriters, isn’t it. Well there you have me. Nothing too exciting I suppose. I hope something comes of this. I thank you for taking the time to read this far.
  13. Introducing myself to you all. Tracey Belle Cothran, I am a native Texan, yes you should be scared --ha ha-- I like to write under my maiden name of Belle and do not really like my ex married name of Cothran, so I will change it soon. I love to write, I am not new to being creative, just new to this type of creativity. I have a warped mind sometimes so constructive feedback will be helpful. As soon as I can figure it out and it will allow me to post some of my work on the Lyrics collection forum, I will--not sure if it is something I am missing on getting into that forum and if someone can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it. Thanks all and I look forward to growing with you.
  14. A Good Day By Amy Abernathy It was 6 am Friday Morning, The alarm clock started blaring so loud, She hit snooze and then she was snoring, then it blazed like a choir in front of a crowd. She got up, brushed her brown hair, Put on her lucky blue shirt. She grabbed a bagel and some coffee, As she hurried off to work. It's gonna be a good Day, I can Feel it, It's gonna be a good day, Good vibes flowing my way, Today is gonna be good. She thought all day about seeing him, and the concert later that night. She been a fan of Tim McGraw since she was ten. She was excited to sway to the music under the moon light. He picked her up in his black Cheverlot, He had two glasses and a bottle of wine. She smiled kissed him and hugged his neck It had been a long week so they were due a good time. It's gonna be a good Day, I can Feel it, It's gonna be a good day, Good vibes flowing my way, Today is gonna be good. The music was grooving , what a show. They slow danced laughed and had some fun. Dancing close with her head on his shoulder. A new romance had just begun. It's gonna be a good Day, I can Feel it, It's gonna be a good day, Good vibes flowing my way, Today is gonna be good.
  15. HI all! I am finally pursuing my dream of writing and recording after some pretty tough life circumstances and my work as a non-profit founder. Glad to connect!
  16. I took a different approach on this one. I took the elements of the storm and made it into a song about a relationship that ended badly. I took what the picture reminded me of and made it about a person. So at first it seems like it's talking about a storm, but then you realize he or she was the storm. THE Aftermath of You- By Amy Abernathy 2014 Wind engulfs the terrain, as a blanket on a bed. Isolation and absence of life no words said. The vitality was sucked up by a powerful wave. Crashing, Thrashing and destroying the love we gave. Winds severed the power lines like a giant pair of scissors. The love that once grew now has fizzled. Leaving only polluted waters where a love once grew. Waves Crashing in, leaving disaster of what we knew. Chorus: If you don’t think you hit me like a storm, Then baby just look at the debris. My hearts in tiny pieces and you have broken me. Now I’m living in the wreckage and the aftermath of you. Like a hurricane you knocked me down and crushed my heart into. Now I’m living in the wreckage and aftermath of you. Now we are lifeless and in a brutal storm’s path. Has love ever known such a furious wrath? I thought through the rubble, we’d find hope, Now everything’s flooded with no life rope. The tsunami of emotions has flooded my mind, My hearts been broke down slammed around and left behind. I thought we were built on a house made of stone. Now we are lifeless and I’m here all alone. I don’t know how I’ll do it, Don’t know how to make it through, How can I survive the aftermath of you? Chorus: If you don’t think you hit me like a storm, Then baby just look at the debris. My hearts in tiny pieces and you have broken me. Now I’m living in the wreckage and the aftermath of you. Like a hurricane you knocked me down and crushed my heart into. Now I’m living in the wreckage and aftermath of you.
  17. Hi!I am a true blue country girl, raised on a fair, from a very small town, went to school in the middle of a corn field, ya know, the usual! I'm fairly new to this site as well as youtube! I recently moved to Nashville to study Music Business. I love country music. It's my absolute passion! I would love it if you would critique this video and share if you like it. I know it is far from perfect and I know I am my #1 worst critic so I was wanting to get some other opinions. I kind of just uploaded it to see what people thought, and I am planning on uploading a much better one this weekend. Most of what I will upload will be covers, however, I do right my own songs I just don't want to upload them until I have all the legal copyright stuff going on. Until then, I would love it if you would let me know what you think!
  18. Hi. I'm an American citizen, but have been living in Romania for 6 years. I have read enough to convince me that I (and my Romanian songwriting partner) should register copyright in the U.S., but what is not clear is what I should put as "Country". I still have a residence in the states, but I also have legal residence in Romania as the spouse of a citizen. It seems like using my U.S. information would tend to be advantageous, but I also collaborate with my songwriting partner, who is neither a citizen nor a resident of the U.S., so if we register some works together I wouldn't know what to put. Is anyone else here in the same boat? Thanks! -Chuckk

  20. I picked up my new (old) guitar at the Guitar Workshop and strummed it a few times and felt great about the new strings and adjustments and excited once again about playing and developing some new songs. These silk and steel strings sound great and with this 3/4 guitar I can recover the standard C chord. As someone, said,"The C chord's pretty important." You can tell by now that I am not a great guitar player; I am a lyricist and singer. Yet, I love to play guitar, when I can make it sound decent. My style is country-folk-blues, the themes of my songs are social justice, poverty-homelessness, nature, relationships, spirituality, personal growth. I was born and raised in the South, but also lived in New England 20 years. So I have been exposed to a variety of styles and mental sets. In addition to songwriting, I write prose-poetry and essays on creativity, personal growth and politics. I love a variety of musical artists, country, rock, blues, etc. Lately, I have been playing a lot of Bon Jovi. I went through a strong Ronnie Van Zant phase a few years ago. There are certain songs I latch on to and play over and over till the CD wears out, like "Collide," by Howie Day,"It's My Life," by Bon Jovi, "Born to Run," by Springsteen. There is a saying by Pat Conroy,"Without music, life is a journey through a desert." I subscribe to that saying. Music keeps my spirit alive, when I feel like i am slowly dying inside. It provides an avenue for deep reflection on the past, as well exploration of the present and a way to envision the future. I love to play out at an open mic at a cafe in Hendersonville, North Carolina called the ugly mug/ This is a tiny venue. You play to maybe 20 people but some great artists show up. What makes it great is the diversity: folk, country, blues, bluegrass, rock. Mountain folk, Southern folk, black, white, young, old. The variety of people makes the setting dynamic. I play-sing originals and covers. As far as songwriting is concerned, I have about 50 songs. I have shared some of them at the ugly Mug, and plan share more. Some people regard performance at a small venue like that as trivial or insignificant. In my view, it is far from that. It's a magic time at the Ugly Mug on a Wednesday night. I am always looking for opportunities to collaborate with other songwriters. Strong lyrics, a good voice, not a great composer or guitar player--that's me. But I feel good about my work. And i believe in music.
  21. My name is Chris as i stated in the topic and i am 35yrs OLD from Texas. I'm a christian-country-bluesish-folkish singer/songwriter, i play guitar, and I draw and paint some. I come from a musical family. i started playing guitar when i was 15 then got married at 18 and for some reason guitar got put on the back burner for a long time( been married 16yrs now ) so i am not anywhere near as far along as i should be. I did finally get up the nerve to enter a songwriting contest and won! yeah me! It was small, about 30 entrants and $150 grand prize, but it felt good. I am kinda in a band, hard to explain. This is my first forum ever. I have recorded one song kind of professionally, the guy who produced it was a pro and he did it for free. any whooo i could go on and on and on and on, but i will spare u any more blah blah blah
  22. Hi to all, I am a country-folk-blues singer-songwriter from Asheville, NC. Also a poet-essayist and advocate for the poor, with a teaching and counseling background. I am always looking for songwriting collaboration opportunities. Having been raised in the South, but also lived in New England 20 years, hence I have been exposed to a variety of musical influences. I play out at an open mic in hendersonville, NC that features a great variety of Southern-mountain, folk, country and bluegrass, as well as blues and rock. I am much stronger as a lyricist but I sing well. I play a 3/4 acoustic guitar with silk and steel strongs. I am basically a baby boomer who strives to stay up with the current array of talented artists, though I am picky. I look forward to participating here. Patrick F.
  23. I am trying to get my songs heard. Now I know is a ballad written for a female vocal which I managed to persuade a very talented friend of mine to record for me despite the Atlantic ocean being in the way. (Isn't technology wonderful?) Wishing my life away is another transatlantic collaboration with a lyricist from Michigan, Ron DeFrain. As soon as I read the lyrics, I heard a country song in my head and I've tried to maintain that in the vocals despite not being much of a country singer (or any other kind!). I am not a performer, just a guy with a bedroom full of instruments and a hope that they might end up being heard by the ears of someone who might consider publishing then Here is a link to my Reverbnation page http://www.reverbnation.com/artist/control_room/1684045?tab=profile&subnav=profile_songs Thanks for your time
