  1. Critique my song please

Link to song: https://soundcloud.com/tim-makhauri/barbie-alt-demo-2-new-drums Please could you critique this early demo version of my song. A few notes: • This is an instrumental version that will have vocals eventually, and has not been properly mixed (have never mixed before and am looking for advice) • This song was created in GarageBand. I am a of noob when it comes to recording, and have never mixed or used production software before. • Guitar was recorded live via a Yeti mic. Certain guitar tracks have GarageBand software amps on them. All drums are made using GarageBand. • Please give as detailed feedback and advice on how to fix and where to learn please!
  2. Cell Phone Junkies!

I guys, Here's one that I've been working on for a bit, but I could use some fresh ears I'm still working on the mix, so please feel free to give me some advice...in any area I know there are a lot of effects on the vocals...can you understand them for the most part? Sorry I haven't been around much this year. I've been dealing with some serious health issues https://soundcloud.com/crystalsuzy/cell-phone-junkie I never leave home without my cell phone It’s a part of me now, like an udder on a cow It’s gotta be with me, both day and night Or something feels wrong; nothing feels quite right I’m a cell phone junkie, dut da da dut da! I’m a cell phone junkie, dut da da dut da! We’re going camping, ya, me and my friends We’re gonna build a fire, so that we can send Secret messages, across the flames Text gossiping's, the name of the game the summer's here and were gonna have fun No one talks; no one hears We stare at our phones, and drink our beer We can text mean things, about a friend But they don’t see it, so we don’t offend Ya, it's summer time and were gonna have fun Me and my phone enjoying the sun We’re cell phone junkies, dut da da dut da! We’re cell phone junkies, dut da da dut da! Off to the beach, where we can suntan With earplugs in, we’re lost in cyber land Suddenly we feel like, we’re in a frying pan Now we all look, like a red lobster-man! In cyber space, we communicate Whether fishing or swimming, in the middle of the lake Our phones are with us, no matter what we do Taking lots of pictures, and self-ies too Walking through trails, takes a lot of skill Starring at the screen, we can take a spill Sometimes we’ll walk, right into a swamp But with the touch of a button, help is prompt We’re cell phone junkies, dut da da dut da! We’re cell phone junkies, dut da da dut da! We can surf the net, no matter where we go Listen to our music, and watch our favorite shows If there’s a fire ban, we watch it on our phones With virtual reality; we stay in the zone It's summer time and the weather is hot We swim in the lake and smoke lots of pot! Cellphone junkies...sell phone junckles Da da da dat da dat da.... Ya, were cell phone junkies, dut da da dut da! Ya, were cell phone junkies, dut da da dut da! Da da da dat da dat da.....
  3. Deus Ex Machina

Thanks in advance for any critique... Smashing Pumpkins were a big influence, given the not so subtle reference in the lyrics...so, if you like the genre then I'd really appreciate your feedback. I think there's too much muddiness going in the middle, so any advice for cleaning that up is also appreciated. This was recorded using Reaper and stock plug-ins (incl drums). If you have a similar setup I'd love to hear your production tweaks and hacks (if appropriate for this forum). Thanks for listening. deus ex machina my mind won't concede although feeling defeated I think therefore I can believe my brain is still beating my heart is still bleeding my toes are all tingly, you see she's smiling, she's a god machine i'm 3 sheets I can barely see how easily I can be free the beat that's beneath my feet is the beast that will feed on my siamese dream she's smiling, she's a god machine she steals every scene, she's a god machine scene after scene i feel I've gone to hell in between saved, suddenly a god machine, she's a god machine i've seen this scene last week i'll fall into a sea of deceit saved, suddenly a god machine, she's a god machine excuse me please, did I have too much to drink, I don't think I'm ready to leave her beat that I'm feeling is it real or am I teasing tragedy she's smiling, she's a god machine she steals every scene, she's a god machine scene after scene i feel I've gone to hell in between saved, suddenly a god machine, she's a god machine i've seen this scene last week i'll fall into a sea of deceit saved, suddenly a god machine, she's a god machine
  4. Hey SongStuffers, this is probably the most fleshed out demo I've done so far so any feedback (performance, production, but especially songwriting). I'd like to know if you like the song of course , also what you don't like. I tried to reference a Foo Fighter's track for the mix...I don't pretend it's anywhere near the quality but I'd appreciate any feedback on the attempt to recreate that sound. Lyrics: When there's a light on You just can't rely on That someone's home The bed is warm waiting for you You try to lie to yourself Believing anything That makes you scream That makes you feel like you can't sleep Until you find Another light in your night Stars on fire burning brighter than the sun And then you'll find That you realize that you had A shooting star in your hand the whole time Under the covers You thought there were others But you’re the one Who didn't want to know the truth There comes a time when You open your mind to That someone who Believed in you all this time And then you find Another light in your night Stars on fire burning brighter than the sun and you'll find That you realize that you had A shooting star in your hand the whole time ** bridge ** A shooting star in your hand Ain't it grand? Aint' it grand? And then you find Another light in your night Star on fire burning brighter than the sun and you will find That you realize that you had A shooting star in your hand the whole time A shooting star A shooting star in your hand (c) ken payne, 2017
  5. Hypnotize me, Override Me (Demo)

I think I'm getting close with my mixes, I'm pretty dang happy with this, I see it's not... it's sort of crammed together, or like... forced to work, but I kinda like that. Reminds me of those 70's and 80's punk bands that produced themselves and it came out awful and gorgeous at the same time. Still suggestions are appreciated cause it could always be better. Oh yeah and the song too, I'm not... the vocal isn't kiilllling me, but with all the difficulties I've had lately I feel like I need to settle at some point just to get something out there, confidence will probably come as I get positive feedback again. Anywho... I'm talking too much, here's the song.
  6. Breaking Blue (demo)

Hi Songstuff community, your feedback is super appreciated. Breaking Blue One last call for all my lost causes One more shot to give all I got for a chance One last fall, on the floor I get up and, take one more Another day I fail to erase my regret Another way I try to make myself forget I was on the side, of the road You were driving by, didn’t slow Under the blue of a thousand moons Are the broken truths of a thousand fools The blue is breaking I'm breaking blue the blue is breaking I'm breaking blue You've set my life on fire I'm feeling higher You say that you're a liar I see desire I am breaking blue I'm awake but my eyes are shut I can hear my scream but my mouth's not open When you're around, there's no sound You shut me up, when I'm down Under the blue of a thousand moons Are the broken truths of a thousand fools The blue is breaking I'm breaking blue the blue is breaking I'm breaking blue You've set my life on fire I'm feeling higher You say that you're a liar I see desire I am breaking blue Under the blue of a thousand moons Are the broken truths of a thousand fools
  7. Stay

Verse 1: It's been an hour Since you last texted me I see the blue light And it lives in infamy Bridge: Who could say But I don't have to stay Chorus: You don't have to go-woah- But I don't have to stay You don't have to go -woah- But I don't have to stay Tell me could you look into my eyes And try to read my mind What would I say? I don't have to stay Verse 2: It's been a month Since I last texted you I see the blue light And I know what to do Delete ya from my life (1,2,3!) You don't mean anything Bridge 2: But all along the rights and wrongs And all the games you play What would I say? I don't have to stay Chorus: You don't have to go-woah- But I don't have to stay You don't have to go-woah- But I don't have to stay Tell me could you look into my eyes And try to read my mind What would I say? I don't have to stay Reprise Bridge 2: But all along the rights and wrongs And all the games you play I try to tell myself I'm wrong How did we end up this way What would I say? You don't have to go I don't have to stay Chorus: You don't have to go-woah- I don't have to stay You don't have to go-woah- I don't have to stay Tell me could you look into my eyes And try to read my mind What would I say? I don't have to stay
  8. Kyle Peks - Narcissus

Hey guys! I recently put out an album about two months ago, and I figured I would post this one in the instrumentals section. This is one of two instrumental tracks on the album. The name of the song stems from "Echo and Narcissus," a chapter of Ovid's "Metamorphoses" that details several stories of Roman Mythology. The idea of this instrumental was to create the image of Narcissus falling deeply in love with the reflection of himself in the water and gazing at it until his death, fading into nothing as a single flower grows in place of where he last laid. I had a friend that played open mics with an old band of mine provide the saxophone on the recording. I would love to hear what you think, and if you dig this track, there's several others on my YouTube channel that are available for you to listen to if you're interested!

  10. Over You

This is not a final take, I think, or maybe it's close. Lyrics are below. Over You Your beauty is the kind that'll get men fighting Over you, they will tear each other to pieces Over you, men will conquer countries Over you, they'll do or die. Over you. Over you. Over you. Your eyes will maked many a man do wonders Over you they'll move the immovable over you they'll resist the irresistable Over you they'll go through hell. Over you, over you. over you Your love makes men heroes of the ages. Over you, they'll slay the dragon Over you, they'll start a revolution Over you, they'll make world peace. Over you, Over you, Over you (chorus) So you are supergirl and wonderwoman with your superpower over men bat your eyes and sway your hips and change the course of the world. Over you. Over you. Over you. (break) Your love will make men heroes of the ages Over you they will slay the dragon Over you they will start a revolution Over you they will make world peace.
  11. More Than Merely Human

I don't know how to classify this song. Dubstep? Hip-hop? I've tried different styles of vocals and I settled on this one but I am open to suggestions. It is a rap or spoken word song. I tried singing it but it didn't quite work out. I tried rapping in a higher pitch with a bit of anger but that kinda sucked. So if this works for you let me know. Thanks for your time! (Also, if you can guess the percussion instruments, you get a star!) MORE THAN MERELY HUMAN You're more than merely human you're more than merely man you're more than merely human more than merely woman. More to you than flesh more to me than blood more to life than the physical more to life than the spiritual. More to life than just working more to success than wealth more to substance than glitter and glitter ain’t worth your health More to seeing than just looking More to listening than sound More to connecting than just yacking more to God than found. More to happiness than mere joy more to friends than hugs more to bonding than mere vows more to pleasure than drugs. More to truth than facts more to beauty than looks more to love than mere sex more to wisdom than books. More to us than we can judge more to us than meets the eye smell the flowers, smell the weed you decide what you need. We got free will to make the choice So choose your soul, reject the mold Cause you can feel what is real The love within, the spirit bold You're more than merely human you're more than merely man you're more than merely human more than merely woman. See with your soul, act with your heart come out of the box and realize the world outside your window can be a living Paradise! Copyright (C) Richard Omura
  12. Poetry that might be rap

I need some criticism for this piece. It's not completely solid, yet. I hope it doesn't sound too cheesy. I wrote this about an hour ago. It's about 3:40 am right now. sorry I'm not spoiled like you sorry I don't get paid every time i do the dishes like you sorry people like you, more than me sorry you opened your heart for me, but I said run free sorry I declined your kickback, you gave me a panic attack, I'm not even lying about that go f*cking wild in your head and write text posts about me you know damn well I'm just that insane, that I'll be doing the same sorry I'd rather hurt myself than hurt the person standing right in front of me don't you see, I'm f*cking imploding But it's all good cause you got all your friends ready for my exposing Just cause you got more numbers doesn't mean you're better than me this all just feels like a waiting game all these relationships in the end are all the same this is just a long list of bottled emotions I'm not trying to start any commotion
  13. Hi - I've been playing music most of my life, mostly in cover bands but for a while in the 90s I was into traditional Celtic stuff and wrote a few tunes for accordion / fiddle / mandolin and played in a few ceilidh bands. Started writing my own songs when I turned 60 and found a bass player and a drummer to form a 3 piece, Doghaus. The songs can be loosely described as "alternative" in style but have elements of roots, rock and blues. I sing the vocals, play acoustic and electric guitars and have added other stuff to the recordings, like accordion and mandolin. This was the first band I had ever attempted lead vocals and it was a steep learning curve! We have played round the Inverness area for a couple of years but it's getting harder to get gigs are there aren't that many venues who want original stuff, it's mostly pubs looking for cover bands. All of us have been there and got the tee shirt when it comes to doing weekends away or overnights for gigs and don't want to go there again, so that is also a limiting factor. To be realistic, at this end of the spectrum we're not expecting too much, just happy enough if people like the music. We have recorded about 8 original songs to date, find them on Reverbnation to Soundcloud. (soundcloud.com/doghaus-2). We are also on Facebook ( look for Doghaus Inverness - there is another Doghaus in the US who are a heavy metal band but we've never heard of them either)
  14. The Room

This is a song I recently wrote, I'm really happy with the result and I am curious to know what others think of it as well. Thanks for the feedback! The Room Sitting here in a room Sitting here in the dark Nothing on the walls Just blank spaces The day comes around Just like the one before I'm in another world Just like they said Rounded days Don't get up I don't have you You don't know me I'm alone in this room Living like I should This room is smaller today I can't stay in the room The door doesn't open The door doesn't shut I wanna think the key Is in my hand My eyes don't deceive me My mind just tricks me I'm just waiting for My next escape I see the stars Not in my head My greatest fear Is not what's ahead I'm alone in this room Living like I should This room is smaller today I can't stay in the room Empty space Another chase Can I feel again Being in this room I'm alone in this room Living like I should This room is smaller today I can't stay in the room
  15. Simon Says!

Hi guys, Here's a WIP! one that's been on the burner for a while...not sure if it's working or not, or if it's indeed a song at all It's about the over prescribing of prescription drugs, particularly opiates and benzo's and the devastating effect it has The Doctors name happened to be Dr Symons, so that's why I brought the 'Simon's Says' game into the song How's the mix? Are the words easily understood? Is it too busy? Is it cohesive enough? Does the title work? It doesn't really have a hook...do you think it needs one? Are the vocals loud enough in the mix? Do you think I should sing the Doctor bits instead of speaking them, or is it effective as is? Any constructive feedback will be most welcome thanks for listening Lyrics on SC https://soundcloud.com/crystalsuzy/simon-says/s-defSn
  16. Hello, thank you all for your comments on previous versions! This is an update with version 3, it is based on your feedback and everything I learned from it. Changes are: Lyrics: from "they smell like freedom" to "their scent is freedom" - do you think it works better? Music: less dissonances, I tried a different and more pleasant melody, chords are the same, so, there will be some still, I think. I also changed some phrasing on some lines. Voice: Just one chest voice, an octava lower. Still pitchy at many points, but these are the best takes I could record until yesterday, and as I'm on vacation I didn't bring the mic with me I hope you can give me some feedback on this new version, thank you in advance. VERSION 3 Hi everyone! What do you think of this song? I only added a little reverb and ambience to the voices. Every critique is welcome, thank you Version 1 https://soundcloud.com/fer-dominguez-674800964/i-think-of-the-moon VERSION 2 I THINK OF THE MOON Lyrics and music by Fernando Dominguez © Copyright 2016. Your collarbone and the sea their scent is freedom Your hand around my cheek my golden prison Once, you kissed my lips, and ever since, I think of the moon Obsession is not a word it is my nickname You give scars to my world the jellyfish way Once, you kissed my lips, and ever since, I think of the moon It’s funny how life and love use the same light finally life is to the sun as love is to the moon and the other way around for sure this is good to know I throw seashells to the sea they bounce a few times It’s good that you’re not here tonight the moon shines Once, you killed my dreams, and ever since, I know what to do
  17. It's fairly common knowledge that both music & musical notation have their basis in mathematics. Each note within the system is assigned a specific time value and each relates to the others in a logical, mathematical way. · One 1/16 note is equal to the value of two 1/32 notes · One 1/8 note equals two 1/16 notes · One 1/4 note equals two 1/8 notes....and so-on. All very consistent, right? At first glance, it would seem so. Until you examine the way in which we deal with triplets. For those of you not familiar with the concept of triplets, I'll briefly explain. Essentially, triplets occur whenever 3 evenly spaced notes are played within a musical space designed to accommodate only 2 notes. For example..... · In 4/4 time a 1/4 note occupies the space of 1-full-count, which equates to 1/4 of the total measure. · As was stated previously, one 1/4 note = two 1/8 notes · But if 3 evenly spaced notes are played in place of those two 1/8 notes, the result is referred to as a "triplet". The way in which triplets are played doesn't pose a problem for me. It's our traditional notation of them that I question. In my mind, the problem is simple. When the actual time value assigned to a note changes, so should the numeric value of the symbol (note) used to represent it. But, that's not the case with triplets! When a 3-note-triplet is played in place of two 1/8 notes, the resulting triplet is shown by inserting three 1/8 notes in place of the original two. So...to quickly summarize, two 1/8 notes = one 1/4 note....except in the case of a triplet??? Who in the world thought that was a good idea? That's every bit as consistent as saying that two 1/8 notes = one 1/4 note, except on Tuesdays.....when the moon is full-LOL Come-on! Would it have been better to create a 1/12 note? If three 1/12 notes had been used to fill the space of a 1/4 note, that would have been mathematically consistent. So why wasn't it set up that way? For the past few months, I've been constructing a series of tutorials on shuffle rhythms. "Shuffles" happen to be built upon the same framework as triplets. That's what got me thinking about this little inconsistency. Honestly, I haven't a clue as to why it was originally set-up this way. But, if we ever hope to inspire a change in the current system, I guess we'd need a viable alternative. As luck would have it, I did have an idea or two. · As a drummer, I'm fully aware that 1/8 note triplets aren't the only type in use. Double-time triplets (1/16 note triplets) are also very common. So realistically, we'd probably need to create a 1/24 note in conjunction with our 1/12 note. Simple enough! · So, how would we write our new notes? Our current system shows triplets in several ways. Generally, the number "3" is combined with either a half-moon shaped arch, or a straight-line bracket....shown either above, or below the staff. Well...we wouldn't need that number "3" anymore, but it might be useful to hang onto a familiar remnant from the old system. So how about incorporating that traditional half-moon arch? If we did that, the resulting notation might look something like this: Would that work? · It's no more difficult · You'd no longer need to look above or below the staff to identify a triplet · It would re-establish mathematical consistency within the system So what's your opinion? Is it worth changing? After all, I'm just one guy with some impromptu thoughts on the subject? Does the idea make sense, or have I neglected to consider major obstacles in my quest to reinvent the wheel? What's your take on it and is it worthy of further consideration? I'm simply hoping to get the conversation started. Hopefully, I've accomplished that! Tom Hoffman Songstuff member profile http://www.tune-smith.com http://www.youtube.com/tomhoffman1
  18. FEAR ITSELF! Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween guys, I thought I'd resurrect this one just for fun This song was written for a scary Halloween comp last year. The drum tracks are live drums, but were recorded for a completely different song which never got off the ground, so I built this song around them

  21. Rag-And-Bone Man

*Rag-and-bone men used to travel with a cart from village to village, collecting rags, bones, and other discarded items. I liked the idea of applying the notion to human behaviour, which so often involves the to-ing and fro-ing between decisions, a state of 'betwixt and between'. Music/arrangement/vocals: Michael Zaneski Lyric: Donna Devine Rag-and-Bone Man V1 I’m here to retrieve All the times you’ve wasted Every precious moment [That] You’ve never tasted V2 [The] vows that you broke Will become my treasure Chances you squandered I'll cherish at leisure Chorus I'm a rag-and-bone man I scavenge in hearts Ones that beat betwixt and between A rag-and-bone man In a beat-up cart I haul your remnants of love To my scrap heap of dreams V3 A dealer in junk I'm in all your tomorrows Waiting while you forfeit The life that you've borrowed I'm a rag-and-bone man I scavenge in hearts Ones that beat betwixt and between A rag-and-bone man In a beat-up cart I haul your remnants of love To my scrap heap of dreams Bridge I’m doing you a favour Taking what you don't need But I leave enough behind So your loneliness can feed I'm a rag-and-bone man I scavenge in hearts Ones that beat betwixt and between A rag-and-bone man In a beat-up cart I haul your remnants of love To my scrap heap of dreams © 2015 Donna Devine

What is your … way?, what is your way to go? I'd … like to trust you, but do you trust me? We … never talked, it’s time to do so. What is your way?, what is your way to go?
