  1. What makes a good collaborator?

So what makes a good collaborator? I ask because apparently I'm not. But I'd like to be. My situation: I'm not an experienced collabber. Technically I suppose I'm theoretically kind of a multi-instrumentalist, I guess. I play some guitar, some keys, competent on bass for pop and most hard rock (not necessarily metal , and def not jazz or prog) - but I'm only good on drums. I write music and lyrics, and I do everything down to the fx. When i get an idea, I tend to get a large spectrum of it: the lyric content, and lyric feel, the word imagery, the music genre or sub-genre, sometimes even down to instrument tones. Of course I don't get most of the details right away (and sometimes never), but I get a fairly complete overall picture of where I want the whole thing to go. I get its personality. Then I have to rise to the occasion and make it real. Aaaand it seems I also do this when collabbing. I tend to take over because it's my responsibility to bring my idea to life. And yes, I definitely think I know what I'm doing. Obviously the jury is still out on whether I actually even have half a clue, but I always try my best. Collab #1 fizzled. Part of that was technical delays on my end, but the initial writer eventually decided to return to a version of his original draft, and maybe shouldn't have offered his idea as a collab in the first place. Maybe. I dunno. The 2nd is an EDM song, which I'm very new to, and my collabber is better at it than I am, but completely missed the musical feel of the early draft lyrics I sent - maybe partly because I hadn't captured that feel in those early lyrics anyway, and partly because the subject matter and the target audience aren't things he can relate to personally. We were both very upfront about that before jumping in. So I sent an early draft version of the whole thing, and he kept bowing out, and eventually said I should send him my complete version and he'd like to help me produce it. That's great, but as a writing collab, I'd call it a fizzle. Collab #3 was some very nice pieces of music from one writer, and a very nice lyric idea from another. Just words here and music there. I warned them I was getting serious ideas for the whole thing, and would prolly try to take over. They said to go for it. So I arranged the music into what I'll swear on a copy of Atlas Shrugged is meant to be the verses, chorus and bridge. This required significant lyric rewrite, so I also wrote new lyrics with the feel and imagery I told them upfront I had in mind. The music writer seems to be happy, but the lyricist understandably feels left out. I used as much of the original lyric as I could make work, which turned out to be just the overall idea, the title, and the bridge (which I fleshed out and re-paced). So this hasn't fizzled, but if an initial writer is unhappy, I can't call it a success. These are all good and talented people (and I've found them all on these critique sites). I've been happy to have a chance to work with them. But the fizzle rate is making me seriously consider abandoning collaboration altogether. Which I really don't want to do. :-( So WTH?? Am I just one of those people no one can write with?
  2. Here is a song written by a very gifted Lyricist Patty Lakamp and performed by Moptop. Please let us know what you think!.
  3. Hi all, I've been sitting on this song for awhile and am in need of a collaboration to pair it with some music and create a professional demo. I've gotten good feedback from some pros in the industry and have adjusted to their recommendations. There's a pitch opportunity I'd like to take advantage of that ends June 16. The pitch is for a major country artist in the US, and I think these lyrics fit the bill for an upbeat summer song to present. The lyrics: Redneck Pension V1 Got a spot of land, Fishing lake More bass and crappies than I can take V2 Case of beer Fishing gear Honey, get this tick off of my ear C1 That's how I'm living On my redneck pension I got all I need here I don't fear no recessions My own apple pie dream Far off the mainstream Living high on wild hogs On my redneck pension V3 Hunting grounds, Ammo rounds, White tail, rabbits, with four coonhounds V4 Bought my land in cold hard cashDuring that economic crash Bridge Bankers turned my investments into trash And their foreclosures burned my stash I had to work under the table To keep my family stable Rich man loopholes aid the scam Hiding it from Uncle Sam Chorus 2 Now I'm living the dream on my redneck pension I had to beg, borrow and steal To own this possession I'm telling you now, This is my one true confession I'm living free and easy On my redneck pension Outro Redneck pension Lifelong obsession My last confession. Hey, I didn't do nothing those darned executives don't do I ain't bending to your conventions Hey there! Get off my property ya'll This here is my land and your trespassing on it You don't leave now and I'll shoot you in the can And then a fingerpicked descending bassline with an explosive strum at the end I do have a melody in mind, but I'd like to hear what someone else might have in that department, too.
  4. Hey everyone I finished this beat awhile back and I was wondering if there is a vocalist willing to write and record to it. The beat itself is has more classic R&B feel to it so the lyrics would have to fit that style. If anyone is interested please email me at guessbeatz@gmail.com
  5. Hi all, Recently I have composed some songs that I wasn't happy with the lyrical ideas, so I am looking to offer them up for anyone interested in a collaboration, to come up with the lyrics and melody. If you want to sing the song as well, then I am fine with that. Everyone is invited to join in. @john - don't know if you would be interested? @Mahesh - don't know if you would be interested? @Peggy - don't know if you would be interested? Here are the tracks: Cheers R https://soundcloud.com/moodman-1/home-17012017-2011/s-YyLo5 https://soundcloud.com/moodman-1/the-last-echo-18012017-2248/s-kh6N3 https://soundcloud.com/moodman-1/the-white-duke-19012017-2035/s-MwmLk https://soundcloud.com/moodman-1/this-charade-19012017-2139/s-Xsb6m
  6. Entre Nous

About three years ago, I announced that I'd be doing a collaboration with J.L.Smith, who is one of my musical idols. I had no idea at the time it would take so long to finish. I've posted very early versions here, but here is the first "final" mix. It's written in 13 edo (13 notes per octave). The initial programming was done in Orion 8.6. Most sound design and all mixing and mastering was done in Reaper.
  7. Hi everyone, I'm a pop songwriter. Live in the NYC area now. Have been writing songs on and off for years. Last worked with a few producers in Los Angeles when I used to live there. My goal right now is to find a producer that wants to collab with me. They send me the beats, I create demos with the ones I like (lyrics, melodies, vocals). Ideally I would like to work with someone who is connected in the industry so that we can pitch the songs we make. I'm not looking to work with producers that want to be artists, and therefore will try to keep the songs to themselves, or any shady characters. Contracts will be drawn up for every song we work on. My demos can be heard below. Looking forward to hopefully getting some responses. DEMOS
  8. Hello From Philly!

Hello! My name is Mary Allain, I am a music student and Philadelphia based singer/songwriter and I'm here because I really need some feedback on my songs. I have written a lot but not recorded much, so when I have recordings of my music I am really looking for a lot of advice when it comes to recording, mixing, and mastering (I am awful at Pro Tools so help with that would be awesome). I am currently working on a website and better ways to market myself so any help at all with that would also be greatly appreciated. Just a little bit about me: As of right now I play 7 instruments. I play piano, guitar, oboe, english horn, ukulele, mandolin, and the alto saxophone. I started taking piano lessons when I was 6 and ever since then I have been completely hooked on music! I've taken private lessons in oboe and guitar, and have sang in many ensembles throughout my education, but I have taught myself everything else. I write songs and have done a very small amount of composing and producing, but I am much better at lyrics than at melodies (aka I'm very bad at melodies). What I really want out of Songstuff is a place to get real criticism of my music from people who know what they're doing, and hopefully eventually have some collaborators so I can learn even more. As a music major currently at college, my ambitions for my future are to hopefully be a songwriter, lyricist, producer, or just studio tech, but obviously I need a lot of feedback and a lot of practice to achieve these goals. Thank you for all your help! Mary Allain
  9. Quite an oldie from me but I thought I'd post the acoustic version here. Collaboration between myself and composer Serg Butler from Moscow. The lyrics were written to a keyboard melody. Before You Go (Music composer: S Butler, Lyrics: J Hutchinson) (Verse One) I used to think that life was very simple And nothing ever magic happened Time just passed me by I always thought that I was no-one special I'd always be alone It was the way that things would be (Pre chorus) Then, you just came into my life And now, everything has changed (Chorus ) Before you go just tell me one thing I'm left always wondering When I think of this I cry Say that you know that I'm always waiting Nights anticipating When you're back again I'm high (Verse Two) I used to think that love would never happen I often used to wonder if This chance had passed me by I always thought romance was just for others I'd spend my time alone Love just wasn't meant for me (Pre chorus) Then, you just came into my life And now, everything has changed (Chorus ) Before you go just tell me one thing I'm left always wondering when I think of this I cry Say that you know that I'm always waiting Nights anticipating When you're back again I'm high (Bridge) I can't explain How you've made me feel about everything I won't complain No matter how often that you need me (Chorus ) Before you go just remember one thing I'm left always wondering When I think of you I cry And don't you know that I'm always waiting Nights anticipating When you're back with me I'm high again (c) 2012 S Butler/J Hutchinson Recorded at Discolife Studio, Moscow.
  10. My wife and I have written lyrics for several country songs and would love to collaborate with a musician. These lyrics have been published in our e-book, Passion: Romance and Love Poems. We are enthused to develop a collaborative relationship with the goal of successfully creating demos and marketable songs.

  12. Moment of Truth

Hi, Folks. This is a collaboration Les (Skin) and I have been working on for the past couple weeks. The backstory is that a man has to tell the woman he loves that he doesn't have long to live. It's fashioned sort of like a duet, where they don't sing together at the same time, but take turns soloing. The man is the featured singer through the bridge and the woman sings the last chorus. Let us know what you think. Moment of Truth Copyright © 2016 by Les Service and L.C. Campbell V1 Just found out today I'm not going to make it I don’t know what to say Her heart, I just can't break it Holding back the tears I smile as I kiss her This is my greatest fear Oh God! I'm going to miss her Chorus 1 I don’t want to lie to her I told her I would die for her It's not supposed to end this way All my dreams have turned to grey I've got to see this through It's the only thing for me to do The time is drawing near For the moment of truth V2 What a joy our life has been I made sure I told her I've been such a lucky man Every day I got to hold her Hiding all my pain I smile as I kiss her The hardest words they came Came out, in just a whisper Chorus 2 I didn’t want to lie to her I told her I would die for her It's not supposed to end this way All our dreams have turned to grey We've got to see this through The only thing for us to do Is hold each other close In this moment of truth Bridge It’s hard to say goodbye I pray she understands I promised her years But it’s out of my hands So hard to say goodbye ~~Musical Interlude here ~~ Chorus 3 I'm glad he didn’t lie to me I'm glad he said goodbye to me I guess it had to be this way Now my dreams have turned to grey I have to see life through It's the only thing to do I feel him here with me In each moment of truth I still feel him here In this moment of truth
  13. Hi I’m Jon Bek a lyricist from ‘Darlington’ County Durham, in the UK, and I’m hoping to team up with 1 or 2 composers if that’s possible, I’m a self taught writer, by that I mean, I’ve had no outside influences from either other writers or any musicians, I’ve gained experience by pure hard work and a lot of research, and now I think I’ve developed a decent standard, I enter lyrics in the UK song and lyric competition, and have been since 2010, and since 2011 I’ve had a least 1 semifinal placement every year, [12 in total] just this year ‘in the currently running competition.’ I entered 5 songs and so far I have 4 semi final placements, but one or more of those could become a finalist or even a winner, but I won’t get know until the competition is over, so, hope I can persuade someone to hook-up to make some great songs for the future, if that happened it would be just great! Oh and I just thought I’d mention I write songs for both male and female artists, [NO RAP] so, if anyone would like to give this collaboration a try, my contact details are below, and we can take it from there. Have a nice day. JB ps I've been trying to put some of my work in the lyric collections forum, but when I'm on the page there's no indication of how to go about doing that, anyone have any suggestions, be a great help,
  14. Hey guys! My name is Nikos, and I am a lyricist from Greece. I am writing since 2011, and have since released songs with various singers, within various genres, and from various countries. My aim is to collaborate with as many composers and producers as possible. Music is a passion of mine, which I can't live without. Since 2013, I am annually pitching songs of mine to various countries across Europe, for the annual Eurovision Song Contest. Of course, working on the Eurovision Song Contest is not the only direction I head towards. Songs of mine have been released in Romania, Belarus, Sweden, Malta, Slovenia, Moldova, with new opportunities and projects in the making. When it comes to what style of music I work on, my answer always is, in each style possible. Personally I am a big fan of Blues, Rock, and Metal music, but when it comes to songwriting, I also have worked on Pop, Pop/Rock, Dance, and Ballads. So, as you can see I don't stick to a specific style of music, but prefer working in different styles, as I also like the excitement of working on something new and different. I hope that I will be able to find several collaborators on Songstuff, with whom I can work on some great songs for great artists. Here are all my released songs to date (which always gets updated with every new release): Hope to hear from you people soon! Nikos
  15. Hi guys, I finally have a song that I wanna run by yous for some awesome feedback/critiques! It's a fresh collaboration work and your valuable feedback will guide us into the first rewriting process. We are looking for feedback regarding: lyrics and melodic contrast between sections of the song. We are aiming for today's pop market so you can also comment on whether or not you think the lyrics and melody are fresh/interesting enough? The song is meant for a female vocalist but, like always, Im singing it for now lol I apologize for the rough sound, Im learning production/arrangement as I go so please bear with me. Thanks a ton guys, Ken

  17. Hello, my name is Ronaldo and I am a Brazilian songwriter with a few songs released commercially, plus some independent tracks available (most of them through collaborations I was able to find here in this forum). I'm starting a project with some colleagues called Sharp Radar. Our goal is to connect songwriters and singers and make great music together. A lot of times, people have something with huge potential in their hands (either lyrics, music or a voice...), but can't find other people who might have the parts they are missing. We believe that internet should be a very powerful tool to allow this type of collaborations to come true and we think this project brings the vision, the focus and the organization to accomplish that. It is a quest for synergy, above all. In this first stage of the project, we are building a close team of songwriters, who will, later, create music for/with the singers we will bring to the project (chosen by the songwriters themselves, as this will work as a collective). We are currently finishing our web site, where you can find all the details about how we plan this to work: http://sharpradar.biz.tm/ I know there are many lyricists here (being one myself), so I would like to point out that we certainly have space for top-line writers (those who write lyrics over pre-existing music). Whether you are a songwriter, a producer or a top-line writer, feel free to get in touch. If you might have any questions or would like to know anything else about the project, feel free to ask and I will answer as soon as possible. You can ask here in the forum, send me a personal message, contact us by the website... Looking forward to hear from the great community we have here!
  18. Hi, This is the kind of thing I do: https://soundcloud.com/aleksei-chapman/sets/pop-ideas These are some chart pop ideas for melodies that need homes. Think Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Icona Pop, Max Martin, Dr Luke, Charli XCX, Natalia Kills. I want to write some hits, basically, and I know that I'm only really good for the melody (and, I guess, the chords). I don't consider myself anything more than average in terms of my pop lyric writing and production skills, so I need to hear from lyricists (of which I understand there a few on this forum!) and producers (to make the tracks banging, shit hot, and awesome - not middling, dull and cheesy like my demos!). I also concede that my voice is not right for the material (I'm male, for one thing) - so finding a good singer for demos would be good but that's getting ahead of ourselves. Edit: I especially need to hear from lyricists - I've heard from many talented people, most of whom are producers... but lyricists are in such short supply. If you are a lyricist, hit me up! And if you know someone who is, let them know! Thanks. Hopefully, despite the crude demos, you can feel the strength of the tunes. About me: I am established, in the sense that I'm experienced, good at music, not an idiot, not a timewaster, genuinely interested in getting stuff done. 30 years old, with a resume of variety. I am not going to give a spiel about my successful life full of name drops and spin. Everyone can do that (everyone does!). I'll just let the melodies do the talking - if you like them, send me an email with a SoundCloud link or similar - it can't hurt... Thanks Aleksei.Chapman@gmail.com
  19. Hi everyone! My name is Diane Richardson and I have been writing for nearly 19 years. Here's a little about me. Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeting you talented people and possibly working together. Please use the following email address: mysammie62@gmail.com - Serious replies only please. 20. Hey my name is Jason Chukwuma and I'm looking to connect with other lyricist through this site. 22. Hello again to all, I thought I'd leave a few songs that I need music for. The genres vary but Pop, Pop/Rock, A/C, Contemporary Country and Urban/Pop are my main genres. Here are 4 lyrics I'm working on now that need music. I'm easy to work with and am always open to suggestions. If you see something you are interested in, please contact me via my gmail addy below. I'm looking forward to meeting and hopefully forming some lasting collaborative relationships. Also, if you live in the Sacramento, California area and are a member of the West Coast Songwriters Association, that would be awesome but it's definitely not a requirement. Well, here goes! *UPDATE* Hey, I'm pretty sure I'm posting in the right place but since I haven't had any responses, I am beginning to wonder. LOL I know the weather is still great in most places so people are out having fun, I'm sure, or these particular lyrics haven't bit anyone with an inspiration bug and that's okay if that's the case. I promise I don't have a huge ego but I would love to find someone serious to work with and see if we can make some magic happen. Also, I am wondering if there are any more good songwriting forums where I might post my songs as well? Thank you for your time in advance. 23. Christine Valencia

Hey everybody! I'm a singer first, a songwriter last haha.. I just recently wrote my first song. So I'm here to get your critique and input on that, maybe I'll be inspired to write some more or maybe I should just stick to singing haha! I used to write poetry but never lyrics, so I'm completely new to that. I don't play any instruments so all I have done are covers, I have some songs up on Smule if anyone wants to have a listen sometime.. And I also need someone talented to put my lyrics to music if they're any good that is. Hoping to find some awesome people to work with! One love!
