I am a forty something that has something to say, as we all do. Over the past 9 or so years I have composed several different lyrics with different tones, feeling, and rhythms. My main influences are Scott Stapp (don't judge me), Jeff Scott Soto, Journey, and Judas Priest. I would love to find someone to collaborate with, allowing full creative license and shared ownership of the song. It has been my dream for a number of years to hear music that I helped create. I hear the music in my head as I write the lyrics, I just don't have the skills to create the music. If anyone is interested, here is one of my 50+ songs. Hope you enjoy. Waiting for sunset Life weighs heavy on my mind Stress and worry have taken my day Sunset gives me a chance to stop and think Would I go back and do it all again If I did would it stay the same anyway The last light of day sits on the horizon I stand here as the world fades away Watching the end of another day (Chorus) I’m waiting for sunset To come my way So I can clear my mind Just one more time So I watch the day As it fades away All my cares and worries Start to fade away If just for another day Life has a funny way Of getting me through the day With every challenge that comes my way It gets harder each and every day But I get through it anyway That’s why I’m so glad to say Tomorrow is just another day A day to rise above and overcome That’s why I’m waiting for sunset to come (Repeat chorus) It’s always darkest just before the dawn This is why we must carry on So we can see the gift of another dawn So we can rise above and overcome We must carry on through the dark And rise above and overcome We must rise above and overcome So we can stand up and meet the rising sun (Repeat chorus)

So what makes a good collaborator? I ask because apparently I'm not. But I'd like to be. My situation: I'm not an experienced collabber. Technically I suppose I'm theoretically kind of a multi-instrumentalist, I guess. I play some guitar, some keys, competent on bass for pop and most hard rock (not necessarily metal , and def not jazz or prog) - but I'm only good on drums. I write music and lyrics, and I do everything down to the fx. When i get an idea, I tend to get a large spectrum of it: the lyric content, and lyric feel, the word imagery, the music genre or sub-genre, sometimes even down to instrument tones. Of course I don't get most of the details right away (and sometimes never), but I get a fairly complete overall picture of where I want the whole thing to go. I get its personality. Then I have to rise to the occasion and make it real. Aaaand it seems I also do this when collabbing. I tend to take over because it's my responsibility to bring my idea to life. And yes, I definitely think I know what I'm doing. Obviously the jury is still out on whether I actually even have half a clue, but I always try my best. Collab #1 fizzled. Part of that was technical delays on my end, but the initial writer eventually decided to return to a version of his original draft, and maybe shouldn't have offered his idea as a collab in the first place. Maybe. I dunno. The 2nd is an EDM song, which I'm very new to, and my collabber is better at it than I am, but completely missed the musical feel of the early draft lyrics I sent - maybe partly because I hadn't captured that feel in those early lyrics anyway, and partly because the subject matter and the target audience aren't things he can relate to personally. We were both very upfront about that before jumping in. So I sent an early draft version of the whole thing, and he kept bowing out, and eventually said I should send him my complete version and he'd like to help me produce it. That's great, but as a writing collab, I'd call it a fizzle. Collab #3 was some very nice pieces of music from one writer, and a very nice lyric idea from another. Just words here and music there. I warned them I was getting serious ideas for the whole thing, and would prolly try to take over. They said to go for it. So I arranged the music into what I'll swear on a copy of Atlas Shrugged is meant to be the verses, chorus and bridge. This required significant lyric rewrite, so I also wrote new lyrics with the feel and imagery I told them upfront I had in mind. The music writer seems to be happy, but the lyricist understandably feels left out. I used as much of the original lyric as I could make work, which turned out to be just the overall idea, the title, and the bridge (which I fleshed out and re-paced). So this hasn't fizzled, but if an initial writer is unhappy, I can't call it a success. These are all good and talented people (and I've found them all on these critique sites). I've been happy to have a chance to work with them. But the fizzle rate is making me seriously consider abandoning collaboration altogether. Which I really don't want to do. :-( So WTH?? Am I just one of those people no one can write with?

Hi. my new year resolution is to create an album with guitarists all over the world, I play bass and can program drums. Ive posted about this before and had some people send me messages but they seem to lose interest after a while. I know this sort of thing happens because I've seen in on Bedroom Bands (https://www.reddit.com/r/BedroomBands) and some other places. Do you think myidea is stupid?

So I'm a singer/ lyricist, and I've been in the live music scene for a good few years. I'm looking to start collaborating online, and I'm looking for producers/ composers to collaborate with. Is it even possible to find anyone through a platform that doesn't consist of paying other musicians for their music? Am I being naive thinking I could work with people in a "you help me, I help you" kinda situation? If there is anywhere it is possible to do something like that, I'd really appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction.

Hello! My name is Mary Allain, I am a music student and Philadelphia based singer/songwriter and I'm here because I really need some feedback on my songs. I have written a lot but not recorded much, so when I have recordings of my music I am really looking for a lot of advice when it comes to recording, mixing, and mastering (I am awful at Pro Tools so help with that would be awesome). I am currently working on a website and better ways to market myself so any help at all with that would also be greatly appreciated. Just a little bit about me: As of right now I play 7 instruments. I play piano, guitar, oboe, english horn, ukulele, mandolin, and the alto saxophone. I started taking piano lessons when I was 6 and ever since then I have been completely hooked on music! I've taken private lessons in oboe and guitar, and have sang in many ensembles throughout my education, but I have taught myself everything else. I write songs and have done a very small amount of composing and producing, but I am much better at lyrics than at melodies (aka I'm very bad at melodies). What I really want out of Songstuff is a place to get real criticism of my music from people who know what they're doing, and hopefully eventually have some collaborators so I can learn even more. As a music major currently at college, my ambitions for my future are to hopefully be a songwriter, lyricist, producer, or just studio tech, but obviously I need a lot of feedback and a lot of practice to achieve these goals. Thank you for all your help! Mary Allain

Hey my name is Jason Chukwuma and I'm looking to connect with other lyricist through this site. I consider myself a lyricist and I deal mostly with writing choruses , I always have a chorus going through my head ha ha .I wouldn't mind helping to write verses though .I have some very limited skills at ukulele enough to get my ideas across :). I feel like I could make a great contribution to a songwriting team so feel free to hit me up .

Hey everybody! I'm a singer first, a songwriter last haha.. I just recently wrote my first song. So I'm here to get your critique and input on that, maybe I'll be inspired to write some more or maybe I should just stick to singing haha! I used to write poetry but never lyrics, so I'm completely new to that. I don't play any instruments so all I have done are covers, I have some songs up on Smule if anyone wants to have a listen sometime.. And I also need someone talented to put my lyrics to music if they're any good that is. Hoping to find some awesome people to work with! One love!

Hi everyone! My name is Diane Richardson and I have been writing for nearly 19 years. Here's a little about me. I have received 2 "Song of the Year" awards from the Golden State Country Music Organization. I have also received an honorable mention from American Songwriter Magazine, and Goodnight Kiss Music. I'm looking for experienced songwriters/composers to work with. Check my Main Music page http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=8518 for news on current collaborative opportunities. I write mostly Pop, Pop/Rock, Country/Pop, and A/C lyrics, but am very versatile as you’ll hear when you listen to my Urban/Pop songs on my SoundClick page. Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeting you talented people and possibly working together. Please use the following email address: mysammie62@gmail.com - Serious replies only please. Also there are more lyrics that need music, so if you are into a different style, please let me know and I will see what I can come up with. The current lyric posted is Urban/Pop. Best of luck to everyone in all of your musical endeavors! Diane a.k.a. MusicIsMyLife

Dear All, Hi. My name is Spike Summers. I started writing lyrics when I was around 14. Formed a punk band at 17 in the late 70s. I was the lead singer and collaborated with the guitarist to write songs. Later I learned to play guitar, a little piano and music production and started writing complete songs myself. I have pretty much been in and out of bands ever since and have been writing songs all that time. However up until now I have just written for myself and the bands I was working with, but today I had a thought that I might have a go at writing lyrics professionally for other people (Primarily in the rock/pop genre for both male or female artists or duets). This was the first website I came across and I was hoping that you guys might point me in the write direction. Professional Organisations? Unions? Copyright? Where to go to find collaborators? Where to advertise myself? etc. As I am new to this area of the business any help you could give me would be much appreciated. Spike

Hi, Strauss here! The last few months I'm engaged in writing songs. In the past I was often writing motivational stories. Lately I've been working on writing songs. I have a lot of crazy ideas and I express them in many forms (painting, writing songs and stories). I'm friendly, caring, little bit weird (in good way, I guess) and creative person. I just want to improve myself. What I'm really looking for is someone similar to collaborate on Skype. I'm looking for fun person, who love to write songs or create melody for songs or who just have beautiful voice and love to sing (I prefer female voice, but nothing wrong with male voice either). Anyone interested? I wanna learn and create with you. Add me: strauss.session I'm glad I found this forum. Have fun!

Hi everyone! I found out this website and the truth is that I don't know if there's people just from the USA or also other countries like the UK. I say it because I'm from Spain, but willing to go to any English spoken country. That's 'cause I have a high level of English and I love it, so that's the reason I write all my songs in this language. Anyway, I don't want to bore anyone, just if you're curious, you can check my songs on https://soundcloud.com/edwinaworld give me your honest opinion. I'd love to collaborate with anyone interested!! Thanks!

Hello! Jes here, born in Russia, grew up in the US, masters in the UK, trained singer, horrible guitarist... so looking for a guitarist/pianist/whoever to collaborate writing some music with, potentially recording or doing some open mics, relaxed stuff! Of course I am open to more serious collaborations if both parties are interested I would describe my style as something like The Staves, Civil Wars, Ben Howard, Rachel Sermani. I can write lyrics and melodies very easily but hopeless with writing instrumentals... if you'd like some samples of work I did in the past with a guitarist in Glasgow, have a soundcloud peek: www.soundcloud.com/jesfarrell Again- looking for someone local in Köln to collaborate with! xxx

In terms of collaboration, I don't just aim for specific genres, but try to challenge myself in writing in various genres. If you are interested then feel free to contact me, I'd be very happy to hear and work with you

Hi guys! I've been quietly following songstuff for a few months now but have been hesitant to make a post; but now I think it's time I jump in :-) I am a medical student in Singapore, and I've enjoyed music and dance for as long as I can remember. I started with training in Indian carnatic vocal and classical dance (bharatanatyam) when I was 6, and western classical piano a few years ago. Did violin for about a year but stopped when schoolwork became too much. I've also been putting up mini amateur musicals with my cousins for New Year's every year at grandma's, so that's me writing songs, script, making props, and getting 10 cousins together for practices each year - it's so much fun. After starting with songs for the musicals I began to write songs on a more personal front, which I plan to keep up for the rest of my life as a hobby. Music keeps me sane. Writing vocal melodies is my forte, I believe. Lyrics are difficult for me even if I feel strongly about something, and instrumental arrangement is the worst (I can only jam simple chords on the piano and guitar, not complex textures). When I write songs I almost always focus on the melody which means I sometimes produce terrible lyrics - so if anyone is interested in collaborating with me for lyrics/arrangement/singing then I'd be more than willing! Except I must make it clear that I have no intention whatsoever of going commercial or pitching my songs to any companies, because I like to keep my music personal and intimate... Lastly, I will post a link to my soundcloud once I have more stuff up there - most of my songs I have crappily recorded on my phone or computer or something so I haven't posted them up, but I may work on getting them recorded on my iPad instead sometime soon So, hello once again and it is nice to meet you all! Yours sincerely, squarks PS. If you are interested in the musical I did with my cousins last year (it's not Broadway!):

I'm a huge fan of the songwriting boards. I love reading all of your songs and giving my critique. I also enjoy sharing my songs and getting a good honest critique. I haven't found a lot of country or folk songs though. There have been a couple that have really stood out. I can really relate with these members and their songwriting styles, because it is what I write. I do cross-over to country-pop in a couple of my songs and I have a couple that have a little "blues flavor" in them (that's what I call it anyway). I'd like to find some members who write in the country genre. I'd love to be able to bounce off one another and drawl inspiration. Possibly a future collaboration Every genre is so different and it's a pleasure to be a part of this community. I drawl inspiration from everyone and there creativity. LET ME HEAR YOU COUNTRY FOLK HOLLER

I am interested in possibly collaborating with a songwriter to create original music to accompany lyrics I wrote for a female musician in my novel, Mother Nature’s Son. The book follows the adventures of a federal wildlife law enforcement agent, Lee Reynolds, recruited by an eco-terrorist group that executes a cyber-crime with the intent of redistributing the wealth to the environment. Meanwhile, my protagonist initiates a relationship with Lucy Douglas, a musician he meets at a local club (think environmentalist Jason Bourne meets a young Sheryl Crow). To highlight the part of the novel that explores Lucy’s struggle to succeed in the music business, I wrote a number of songs (lyrics only). The music genre would be rock (think Liz Phair or Juliana Hatfield). If you are interested in composing music for these songs, please visit my website http://www.petedavidbooks.com to view the song lyrics for one of the songs, Paper or Plastic? If you think the lyrics are worthy, you can send me an e-mail indicating your interest at petedavid23@gmail.com.

I have a question concerning song copyrighting. I'm working on a project that involves reinterpreting the works of blues singers of the early 1900's who's works are currently owned by publishers. These songs were changed through arrangement by adding or subtracting chords and melody or adding instruments. Parts of lyrics were used in these arrangements by the writer and additional lyrics were added by the current artists. My question is this. My intention is to give copyright credit to the original writer when any part of his or her song is used, but can the current artist also be credited as a writer or collaborator? If so how would this be listed in the credits?

My name is Adam Hosburgh. I'm 20 years old and have been playing, preforming, composing, recording, writing, teaching, and of course, learning music for the past decade. I had a little local metal band for a while called 12 Steps Away and I'm wanting to start a new art project called Breath Free. I have the ideas and the means to work but I want to work with other musicians over the internet to complete it. I'm not going to limit the number of ideas or the number of people. I want this to be a living creation based on the influence of everybody (but i do have general story and musical themes that I would like to stick to. Think of myself as a project manager if you will.) But don't let that differ you from submitting your talents, no matter how grand or insignificant you might feel them to be. Contact me and I will send you my full idea, including what I have so far completed. I use GarageBand to record with and I own a guitar and violin, but I can play and write for many instruments. right now I know I'm looking for bassists, singers, percussionists and synthesizer/keyboardist/pianists. Find me on facebook, message me here, reply to this post, or send me an email: adamsvette@gmail.com I look foward to meeting you!
