  1. Just Let It Go

OK I've been messing around with the intro on this tune. They're each only 26 seconds long so if you have a little time, please let me know which one you like better. Thanks - Randy If you don't want to post could you possibly just like one of the two on SC. That would suffice. Thanks again. https://soundcloud.com/just-1l/jlig_1 https://soundcloud.com/just-1l/jlig_2 Just Let It Go Randy Drilingas Just 1L ©2017 What a strange way To start the morning. A little bit of salt Laden tears for those in mourning. Find a space and keep what’s real Right next to you. When you can no longer take it all. The savior in the mirror looks kind of like A beat up drum. Let it go. Just let it go. When the brain drain Becomes less warming. Attention spans gone. Trick the pain With something alarming. It’s a damn shame This I know. Go back a space and lose one turn. Then watch and wait to find a cure for all. With hated breath. Let it go. Just let it go. Something doesn’t feel the same. Bearing the weight of others pain. 24/7 every day. Peace of mind’s been led astray

  7. Watershed

Damn. Just realized I clipped a few seconds off the beginning. Since I'm working on it, I'll leave it for now. I finally got around to redoing this 2011 song. I've got some ideas on what I might do with it but wanted a few opinions first. Lyrically, I was glad to find it out it is still as relevant today as it was when I wrote it. There are a couple lines I'm so-so with so if they get pointed out, I'll probably change them. Probably will regardless, I went with the lines that sounded better, not necessarily the one's that would work the absolute best. It may or may not matter. Overall I'm pleased with it, but also think maybe the third time may be the charm. Chow. Watershed Just 1L, Randy Drilingas 2011 I fear we'll never get another try. Gone are the days, we could do as we like. Seems like everything we do Hurts another side. Can't seem to find a plot of common ground. Sides are too far apart. Lands too unsound. Sit back and join the fight that's going 'round. And that's no damn good. (2x) We keep pointing our fingers At the other side. Never once do we ask ourselves How it might affect the others plight. It's just "Mine, it's all mine. Stay away from my side or I'll desecrate your freedoms tonight." I love it when we're told "Comply!" Or else we're wrong. Sarcasm aside, many freedoms have gone. Shit like that makes me think We'll never get along. So we keep living making livings Trying to find our way. We get used to the change. Does no good to complain. Often glancing back at What we call the "good old days." And that's no damn good. (2x) We used to think that the Watershed Would give us life. It did that. It did more. It also taught us we all know how to fight. My gains what you despise. The watershed turns to bloodshed in the blink of an eye. Used to think that the Watershed Would give us life. It did that. It did more. It also taught us we all know how to fight. Their gains what you despise. The watershed turns to bloodshed in the blink of an eye. And when somebody pulls their gun. Everybody's on the run. The watershed turns to bloodshed in the blink of an eye. And so on and so forth ,,, yadda yadda yadda, and the songs over.
  8. Don Davis

Hello! I'm a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist based near Washington, DC. I enjoy most styles of music...good music is good music, right?...but will admit to a particular weakness for melodic rock and indie pop. I have been writing songs for as long as I can remember and have recently set up a project studio to record my music. One of my songs, "California (She's Leaving)" was selected as a finalist in the 2013 Show Me The Music songwriting contest. Another song, "Fallen" received an honorable mention in The SongDoor 2015 International Songwriting Contest. I'm currently working on my first studio album. Glad to be a part of this community and I hope to learn a lot! Don
  9. Ok, so I have a lot of music and even vocal melodies but I'm not too into writing lyrics, it's basically like homework for me and I don't enjoy doing it because i don't do it well and I'm usually just "meh" about what I've come up with. I am very specific about the type of lyrics I like. I'm a fan of imagery, metaphors and just interesting or clever lyrics. I'm not looking for the norm cliche lyrics, I can write those. I'm looking for someone who listens to and enjoys the stylings of modern day indie rock. Bands like, Wye Oak, Widowspeak, Sharon Van Etten, Portugal. The Man, The Shins, Death Cab For Cutie, Washed Out, Beach House, etc. If you can write like Ben Gibbard or James Mercer or remotely similar to any of the above bands or bands similar to those, I'd love to hear from you. I'm not looking for sappy love songs or cliches. Just think INDIE ROCK and you'll be in the area of what I'm after. Thanks and hope to find some collaborators soon! Mark PS - if you have links to some of your work that'd be most helpful as well.
  10. Stay a Little Longer

hello all! #### update: changed parts of bass, guitar and synth that had pitch issues, and adjusted volumes to make vocals (and backup vocals at some parts) stand out more. #### #### update #2: combined and shortened verse 1 and 2, took away prechorus guitar to create more space for chorus, changed intro guitar part, added rhythm guitar to final verse, changed levels of tracks etc.. #### This song is a rework of my band's old song, the only track I brought over is the vocals (i can't sing like that, sadly). The lyrics: ===================== [verse] Hear, the shrill when you graze your strings a hum that draws me in, and make me stray i lose myself in the drift, but i know you exist and your face, you look fierce when you don't smile [verse] Dip out of our comfort zones, embrace the unknown something we can hope for, something we could die for and your gaze, you don’t see tomorrow ... i know and your sound, your sound.. [pre-chorus] i think its almost like the silence in between the beats like a heartbeat electrifying saturating to a scream [chorus] i want you to stay, a little longer just one more song from the top you, wanted a change, but now you're gone forever [verse] Feel the air of desperation, smothering the room the fuzz in the bends, our spirits sway you’re playing the parts right, but you weren’t really there and your frown, you’re trying not to drown [pre-chorus] i think its almost like the silence in between the beats like a heartbeat electrifying saturating to a scream [verse] you wanted to stay, a little longer just one more song from the top we wanted to change, but now you're gone forever [chorus] i want you to stay, with us forever don't let the music ever stop if everything change, will you still hear forever? ===================== this song was about a bandmate who had to leave. the reason i wanted to rework this song is because the previous version wasn't close enough to what i feel about this song. the previous version was the collective output from the band. maybe i will insert the link to the old version for a comparison later, but i wanted you folks to hear this new one first. This is also the first song i played around with midi / virtual instruments a bit more. previous experiences were limited to percussion VSTi, so i'm not sure if i could had done those parts better. i hope that i'm at the stage where i'm going to apply the finishing touches, fix some flaws in the mix etc. Please feel free to give me your comments! thank you!
  11. "Better Now (or 'Alright')"

So here's my second song to post to this website. I will have an updated version of "A Sign of Exposure" ready eventually, but for now, feel free to evaluate this song of mine. It's called "Better Now", but for simplicity's sake I think I'll change the title to "Alright". I wrote it in regards to a friend who gives me hope. As I explain in the video, I sent it to Wheatus ("Teenage Dirtbag") frontman Brendan B. Brown after I met him after his band's gig at The College of New Jersey (my current institution of attendance). Enjoy (I hope (-: ) as you evaluate! 12. Down We Go

Testing out my father-in-laws GoPro camera. It fell off towards the end so I had to improvise. One of my more recent songs. I had added some guitar fills but it just felt to "not needed". Not sure if it needed them or not. DOWN WE GO Randy Drilingas - Just1L ©2014 I get so tired of shit these days I feel like getting lost Bombarded with so many tragedies. I wanna turn 'em all away The future's come to save me Grab a phone But it only seems to drain me Here we go Where're we going? Where're we going? I just don't know Where're we going? Where're we going? I just don't know Drove myself to work today Thinking I had it all Then I lost my job to the “new” way What a kick in the balls The future's come to rape me and send me home Once it automate's me Down we go Where're we going? Where're we going? I just don't know Where're we going? Where're we going? I just don't know
  13. Too Soon

What's up bros, this is my newest song. I was going for 50s revival but it turned out to be a little psychedelic. Please mind the horrible production, I'm still lost with the panning/EQ/etc. Except reverb! Gotta love that reverb! This is a little milder than my last one, so please let me know if you think it's garbage! Thanks btw happy easter! https://soundcloud.com/vermontband/too-soon Lyrics: How do you mean that you're off again so far and away and out of my head? What did you see that changed your scent to my dismay that's falling instead? It's tough to think you're leaving after a place where we were Among the company of rational trade. I think you're The sober sentimental saint in a grace. You say you're A running accolade for ominous things. You're going Too soon! I know your feeling babe, there's something that you want to say so You do whatever it'll take and I'll be by your side so babe You're beautiful and mesmerizing. I'm a fool for tranquilizing Everything we had in mind And now we're floating paralyzed But stay with me, you're doing fine. Let's run the course and make it right. Imagine what the future's like Where we are happy holding tight Where will I go knowing you're gone? I'm lost in a daze and calling for cause Isn't it strange when you are alone and knocking the phrase that you're out of love? Our lovely little lives will soon be estranged to make for Some dark emulsifiable bittering faces obscured. Were there a photo shoot the camera would break. I think we're A second chance away from pitiful days. Imagine what the future's like Where we are happy holding tight You're beautiful and mesmerizing. I'm a fool for tranquilizing Everything we had in mind And now we're floating paralyzed But stay with me, you're doing fine. Let's run the course and make it right. Imagine what the future's like Where we are happy holding tight You are the sun and I am the moon and nothing will cloud the light that we ooze It's never enough to say that we're through but hear me aloud. We've got to improve Too soon! I know your feeling babe, there's something that you want to say so You do whatever it'll take and I'll be by your side so babe Too soon! I know your feeling babe, there's something that you want to say so You do whatever it'll take and I'll be by your side so babe
  14. Supernatural

Hey guys, this is my newest venture... lately I've really been delving into the alternative side of things. Also finally getting into Logic X, although it wasn't used for this. Let me know if you like the beat and stuff, if the vocals are too harsh (i think the oooohs in the verses are off key), and if there should be bass.. because I have no idea how to add bass to this (no experience). Anyway, here it is! https://soundcloud.com/vermontband/supernatural Lyrics: We're not a supernatural influx of people who came Don't stop to think we're magical 'cause you and I are the same There's nothing you should answer for to feel ahead of the game We're just a bunch of animals who try to work through the pain Did you forget you're not the one in red? What have we said? Listen why you're alright-- doing fine-- in the light We're at a bend somewhere along this trend Don't be upset At a time if you'd like we could fight out of sight We're not a supernatural influx of people who came Don't stop to think we're magical 'cause you and I are the same There's nothing you should answer for to feel ahead of the game We're just a bunch of animals who try to work through the pain Right from the start we'll have a heart to heart ...map out a chart... Look and see all of these fallacies to agree We'll stay apart until you're off your guard Under the stars... We can be anything you can dream in a week So we're flying in a blue sea, can you believe? Low burns lying on the moon beach Set your mind free We're not a supernatural influx of people who came Don't stop to think we're magical 'cause you and I are the same There's nothing you should answer for to feel ahead of the game We're just a bunch of animals who try to work through the pain
  15. Liberty

Here's a newer song I've been working on. It's kind of a different song structure that my songwriting path has seemed to be leading me towards. You're only getting that chorus twice and what I call the "cooler part" once. My wife thought the end part was too catchy to only be in there at the end on her first listen, but after another one she liked it how it was. I'm interested in your thoughts on that. The drums need work. I can envision what style of drumming I really want. If anyone is familiar with Benjamin Booker I think his drummer is amazing and could see that style really boosting my tunes to a new level. To take the time that I already don't have, while I have many more songs I wish I cold work on, wouldn't be the best way for me to spend my time, so I'm going to have to say they are what they are. That being said, I may go back in and add some fills and cymbals at some point. As far as the recording goes it's definitely not perfect but probably one of my better recordings, if not the best. So I'm glad to be making a little headway in that area. Really, the main thing that bothers me with the recording is during that opening guitar part there is this little hum or ringing coming from the guitar that I can't seem to get rid of, so any ideas on that would be appreciated. Could just be my playing style that I have to work on. Even though it's not prominent later on, I'm guessing it's there and messing with the mix throughout the tune. https://soundcloud.com/just-1l/liberty LIBERTY Randy Drilingas (Just 1L) ©2015 (verse 1) If you take What you want When you want it Don't be surprised to find Your body lying In the road. Didn't you know? (verse 2) If you slice Off your nose Just to spite where it grows. You might have to do a little climbing Outta the hole. Don't you know? (chorus) Liberty Unchained me. I'm feeling the war inside my Restless bones. Sweet Liberty How can you sway me? An eye for an eye Is all I know. If your side Is with crime And you flaunt it Don't be surprised to find Your children dying. Before they're old. Or so I was told. Liberty Unchained me. I'm feeling the war inside my Restless bones. Sweet Liberty Please educate me. An eye for an eye Is all I know. (something or other) Sweet Liberty is hollow. When the wrong path to followed. Why/How is that hard to swallow?
  16. Hello everyone, just wanted to share a song that I wrote few years back. Recently I just finished composing and recording everything in the song. Any feedback would be appreciated. Morning Rain (New Beginning) Music and lyrics by Jon C. Am I the only one who enjoys the morning rain? The great big sky that helps to ease the pain Dreams you have, the life you've got They ain't gonna be the same I can't help asking myself Where's my soul right now? Am I the only one who hides behind my memories? I replay all the pieces just to escape the reality Days go by and I realize It's not about the destiny but a beautiful journey Say goodbye to the dark nights I am gonna get through it one more time Falling down, from thousand miles to the ground Let the rain turn into rivers Flow away yesterday Moving on... I gotta leave it all behind Gotta rediscover my soul This is my new beginning with the morning rain Am I the only one who trapped inside my fantasies? What it seems don't always match with what it means Days go by and I realize It's not about the things you see but the choices you're making Time to stop asking myself where I'm going right now Falling down, from thousand miles to the ground Let the rain turn into rivers Flow away yesterday Moving on... I gotta leave it all behind Gotta rediscover my soul I'm gonna find a new beginning in this morning rain
  17. Hey, Don't Leave Me Alone

I could yap for quite some time about this song, how it came about and it's meaning. But I won't! I'm hoping its pretty self-explanatory with a little hidden meaning in there. Enough of that though. This gave me all sorts of headaches while mixing. Trying to get the two different guitars playing with each other in "left" and "right" speakers works just fine in my car, but when I put headphones on I get too much of a "wavey" feeling. Of course that's due to me not being all that good with mixing. It's a work in progress I hope to get fixed. So anyone with some mixing skills that may be able to point me in the right direction please let me know what I need to do to get this one to gel a little more. One thing may be the right-side guitar might be too loud. With that guitar, I was trying to pull it forward to rattle some teeth but it's just not working yet. Also, I got a lot of feedback when recording the vocals so I'll be redoing those as well. This is the first time I've done "screaming/yelling" type vocals and really have to work on recording those. I have a drummer that will play on this. My goal is to get him a copy to listen to as he plays that won't hurt his ears. I have a few other changes in mind but one thing I'd like feedback on also is the harmony in the last part of the second chorus (between the verses). I have it pretty low in the mix now but I think you can hear it. When I first did it I liked it, but after hearing it a few times I wasn't sure if it went well with this or not. So any feedback on that is appreciated. Thanks for listening. Randy (Just1L) DON'T LEAVE ME ALONE Randy Drilingas 2012© Hey, don't leave me alone. Hey, don't leave me alone. V1 Touch-screen motherboard social life. The Introvert's out. Now digitized! The new e-You. V2 Saying something witty waiting for your "likes". Hoping others feel the same way inside. Do they? Or is it only you? CHORUS I hear somebody saying. "Don't leave me alone." Can ya hear somebody saying? "Don't leave me alone." V3 Big boner electronic high. Sitting at a stop light. Can't take your eyes off a... text to you. V4 We're sitting at a table getting ready to dine. We can't even talk, you keep checking online. What's wrong with you? 18. Broken View

Ey Guys, This is a song I write for the drummer of my (ex-)band. He broke up with his girlfriend and asked me to write about it. http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11794331 Curious to hear your critique. Lyrics: Broken view There is this Island I lived on I was making plans Based on the beauty of my view One rock in the sea To stabilize, to complete the sea The real world is a dream world on the shore Broken rock A broken view There is nothing on the shore The view just stays the same for years Lights shine on the shore The rock is blocking all my view The distance’s coming close The time goes by, the rock stands still Trust? The dream world is a real world on the shore Broken rock A broken view Alcohol is on the shore
  19. Falcon Kid

Here's a song that's a few years old that I will be going back and reworking hopefully soon. I do have some plans in mind for it but would love to get your feedback. The recording is sub-par so bear with me on that. I do have some specific spots I'd like some help with. I wonder/worry about the first line in the second verse "The day had come and now he would try". To me it works but every once in a while while reading it, it seems out of place and disconnected in some way. Any help there would be appreciated. Next is the guitars. I'd like your honest opinion on them. There are two the acoustic (w/effects) and the electric. I'd like to know what you think as far as how they are working together and what could maybe be done to give them some more "umph" Another thing I wonder about is the part that starts right after the "bridge". Earlier in the song in that same spot, the music slows down which I think works well in those spots, but not so sure if it should slow down again there. Does it lose too much energy by slowing down again or is it working?? Any other comments are appreciated also. There's a few spots where I struggle with the higher notes and missed so I need to be working on that for sure. Some of the lyrics won't match with the music as I'm trying to work them a little better. I started the song out with "And" which I myself have critiqued as a not so good thing in the past. For my personal CD project, this would work with the other songs, not so sure how it works standing alone. Thanks! http://soundcloud.com/just-1l/fkid FALCON KID Randy Drilingas ©2009 And so the story was never told. About the boy who would be so bold. He would grab that key and he would ride the waves to the ends of the sea. The day had come and now he would try. To find out if in fact he could fly. But he came soaring back down to the ground. A door was slammed in his face and he frowned. He simply turned and he walked away. He dropped his wings and then he went right on his way. Never looking back he didn't noticed that the door had not been locked. Now he's adrift on a raft in the sea and not coming back. Looking for a shore he can't find, it's not there, just imagine that. —————————————————————————————— (chorus) We could be all tied up to another time and place where we can't find another kind of seemingly lost wit that's recognized. —————————————————————————————— Then the clouds they began to form. The boy looked down as they seemed to warn. He knew he had get off this sea. Or else he'd never be truly free. And then one day he looked up to the sky. One single tear had shown that he could cry. It meant he had to go back right away. To try all over again a new way. He boldly walked to the door and he knew. He spread his wings in the sun and flew. The day had come that he'd waited for so long out at sea. But always looking back to the time when he felt that he had no chance. Learning from his past he was sure he had found yet another dance. —————————————————————————————— (chorus) We could be all tied up to another time and place where we can't find another kind of seemingly lost wit that's recognized. It's just a day when we all start to agonize a way to find out how to energize a slowly lost flame straight to paradise. —————————————————————————————— Up and down, that's how the story goes. Live your life. Watch how the days unfold. Tell your friends you'll catch them another time. Sit right down and plan yourself a little life. Do what can be seen in all kinds of light. Place your bets and then let the wheel fly. Give 'em a reason to ask to see you some more.. Use your foot and kick right through the closing door. Find your way to come alive. Don't give up until you die. Another chance is waiting just around the bend. Remember all your dreams that have gone that always used to consume your day. Or they'll get carried away on a ship bound for yesterday. —————————————————————————————— (chorus) We could be all tied up to another time and place where we can't find another kind of seemingly lost wit that's recognized. It's just a day when we all start to agonize a way to find out how to energize a slowly lost flame straight to paradise. We're not all the same, there's no shame it's the way of life. We always feel good when we know our way. We're doing okay. We're here to stay.
  20. Slip Away

http://soundcloud.com/ian-conway/slip-away I wrote this one a while ago, recorded it a few months ago (at home) and I'll be ready to re-record eventually. my biggest problem with it is (apart from the fact that I hate my own singing voice) the fact that it has no chorus or hook to it; it's just a straight shot beggining to end. could use and feedback or advice. when you post, feel free to link to songs that have a good example of what your talking about or a direction you think it could go in, and also link to your stuff if you want feedback on any of it. thanks so much! Lyrics: starts to slip away from me make it as good as can be. now this push has come to shove and it's burried all my love. with all my effort gone to shit sit here forced to look at it all I want's to run away but I know we're here to stay broken pieces making shapes brand new plan initiates coming back around this time the beggining of the line.
