  1. Do you know the difference between an outlaw and a criminal? Most people think they are synonymous and interchangeable but they are often different concepts. Criminals are outlaws in a legal sense but outlaws are not always criminals. Outlaw is often a cultural or artistic construct more than a legal one. Criminals break the law, outlaws are outside it. The word outlaw originated from the term outcast. This is someone who does not conform to the community and are cast out meaning that laws protecting them no longer apply. Bob Dylan was an outlaw because he was a folk musician who picked up an electric guitar, hired a drummer, then went to the Newport Folk Festival. The crowd was outraged and threw a temper tantrum. Dylan had made a giant leap forward artistically but his audience of that time hated it. This put him outside their community. Willie Nelson is the father of a movement which is called Outlaw Country. They were not criminals. They were people the Nashville establishment had little use for so they then started their own little thing, a musical Cosa Nostra. They were outside of the established Country music order. The Rastas who started performing Reggae were outlaws outside of the White establishment of Jamaica. They truly had a unique lifestyle outside of the broader community of British influence. They had the audacity to drop the slicked down hair and suits of most Black acts of the time. The first photos of Bob Marley show him dressed that way. Keith Richards remembers him like that the first time they met. Today’s Rap or Hip Hop artists are made up of people who style themselves as gangstas. Often they are criminals of a very petty variety who package themselves as outlaws which they are not in the artistic and cultural use of the term. The reality is that they are a conformist’s conformist conforming to all the rules of their community. They are simply poseurs, posturing as something they are not. In other words they are often criminals who may be sentenced for petty crimes and sometimes violent. In the worlds of Art and Culture however they draw as close inside the lines as possible in order to remain a part of their community. In that sense are not outlaws. They are the established order not outside it. Their culture is money and success with all the trappings of it. This is being oriented exactly the same as the broader establishment community.
  2. The Easter holiday gave me more time than I had previously thought and my OCD kicked in.
  3. One of the complexities of life is people are similar but different. Everyone lives at the same time both in the world they perceive and the larger world referred to as reality or a commonly accepted form of what really exists. Even that is not the final reality. This is why there is both Religion and Science. Each claim to be the final arbitrator but it is physically impossible for the finite to conceive the infinite. Back to the original subject… My neighbors and I live in different worlds which overlap. This is not to say one is better than the other, only different people with different concerns. We all live in the same place but place value on different things for a variety of individual reasons. Still people are more alike than different. Many people can be similar to one another without being the same person. Many artists and bands are very similar but at the same time very different on many different levels. I have an excellent illustration of this. I took Carlos Santana’s online course The Art and Soul of Music. I discovered we are more similar than what I had previously thought although I had been his longtime admirer going back to his first album. This is not to imply I believe I have the talent and ability of Carlos Santana as that would be not only vain but ignorant. He is major league, I played in a sandbox. However we have similar backgrounds starting out and conceive of many things in the same way. Some are because of music, some are because of growing up impoverished, or some because of another reason. We both have heavy Latin influence in our music. He was genetically and culturally in a Latino environment, my relatives were largely in Texas and Florida when there is a lot of Latin music. So percussion is a big deal for both of us. Because we grew up with no financial advantages, we both are deeply empathetic and go out of our way to help other people. He can do big things, I can do little things. We both married women in a different area of the same field. He married Cindy Blackwell his drummer. I have told my own story many times before. We both are deeply spiritual people who are not dogmatic or follow an organized religion. We both believe in something bigger than the god of any human religion. We perceive their gods as merely symbolic, or something beyond that religion’s authority. We both have a little training in formal music which we applied in a popular music environment. We both play guitar in a much more melodic fashion than most Rock guitarists. We generally don’t play riffs or heavy chord progressions, we play melodies. Neither of us wander but are very concise. We both have identical ideas about how to run a band. This is because he could verbalize what I had thought for years but could not put into words. When I say “Bands which are democracies generally fail” this is a direct quote from Carlos Santana.
  4. Ode To Life A Short Composition In Blank Verse Any time you think NO ONE Could screw things up That is when you learn This is not true (This is meant more as humor than as cynicism.)
  5. Some songs have the ability to be more than themselves. They transcend their lyrics and form to describe the human condition. Last night I was listening to Glenn Campbell perform Jimmy Webb’s Wichita Lineman which is one such song. It tells of a man working a lonely, dangerous, low paying job because of his love for his wife. It does so in a concise, brief manner using very simple words. It evokes an image much greater than would be expected. You can feel his loneliness and his love as well as his commitment to his work. Lyrically it is an Intro, 2 Verses, then a Chorus which repeats. It is hard to get simpler than that. However its effect is epic. Have you ever written a song you feel transcends itself? If so why?

    My "Success Story"

I was recently asked about what success means to me as a songwriter and musician. Explaining what this broad term means took me good thought. But recently, something that happened made things much easier for me to answer this question. Every individual is on the journey of finding some purpose in life. There are good times and bad that each of us wade through. Though we cannot possibly quantify all of it in a sentence (or a hundred), there are certain experiences that embrace the essence of it. I’ve been a singer-songwriter for years now and fortunately, being among the right people and the right situation, I’ve been able to make a living out of this. Not long ago, while unwinding among friends, I was asked to sing a couple of songs of mine that they were familiar with. I was happy to oblige as I‘ve been in the past among the same friends. It was a day with amazing food, new friends & family and the energy, so pure and serene. I savoured every bit of singing my heart out. What happened once I finished is what, I think, reasserted my purpose for making music. There were tears, hugs and kisses that came by me. Then it went among each other, where people expressed love and gratitude with heavy emotions. It was a surreal night. I did NOT just say that to praise myself and what I will say next should hopefully clear that. As a musician, a lot of people tell you — “You’ve got to work on your skills to give the listener your best” which is absolutely true. But as the words repeat in your head and outside of it, some tend to lose direction and ego takes over. The pressure to impress rises. But you know, to people with struggles, life goals and the need to find purpose, the only thing that matters is how something makes them feel. One can look over the mountains and be lost in recording the moment with their phones to show the world of their conquest. Another can be lost in the mountains themselves. The sheer beauty of it. Neither of it is necessarily wrong. Believe me, I’ve done both of ‘em. It doesn’t even have to be a mountain. It can supposedly be the ugliest thing in the world, but many see through it and find beauty and peace, in the darkest of moments. These mountains aren’t the way they are because they want to impress somebody. They are what they are, and remain to be, allowing for memories to be made, love to be shared and worries to be forgotten. That evening, I felt like the mountains. Ego had no room because love & gratitude was strong among everyone in the room. Stories and struggles that I don’t know of became the guests that were served; with words and melody. You see, songs don’t have to be good or bad to make people feel that way. They are just catalysts to heal unspoken words and tangled emotions. Success, to me, was seeing this unravel before my eyes and then staying with it, in silence.

  8. I already posted this under Rap and Hip Hop lyrics cause I didn't find this "First post" thing until after that. But I guess there's no harm in posting it again here since I am new member after all so here goes *Actually, there is! As it states, this section is for introducing yourself, NOT for posting work. Sorry! Additionally, we ask that members post each work only once. Thanks!
  9. So yeah my name is Soul Was looking for a forum like this To share my rhymes is my goal Yes this is my only wish I read all your guidelines and they made it clear That this place is to help everybody here So I promise to be constructive in my critique Not fake and destructive like Mystique All I can spit is the truth And I know people don't like to hear it But that is my sworn oath So I will rap the way I see fit Cause I don't see a point to writing lyrics If there ain't no damn message in it I don't believe writing songs can be so hard All the shit I say comes straight from my heart I use my emotions to make a song This way nothing can go wrong But still I have to stay so f*ckin strong Hey don't get me wrong Things can still f*ck up Explode in your face like a bomb You're stuck in a maze out of luck And guess what no one gives a f*ck I had doubts about this place and still do Don't know if I'll find out anything new And you know whats f*cked? I had this whole intro planned out in my head But now I'm getting way too drunk Perhaps I have been mislead Into thinking I could ever get there Where I truly wanted to be I just want to be free But there is still hope for me Just wait and see I've got lots more lyrics done and some on the way Perhaps I'll get recognition one day And please be patient my fellow rappers I will open up your posts like Christmas present wrappers Looking for something new and exciting On your posts I will be writing Once I sober up and get my mind straight Trying so hard just not to make dumb typos I mean being drunk is so f*cking great But it also means I carry a heavy weight On my soul and myself I truly hope you will accept Me as one of your kind Cause this type of community is so hard to find But I'm here and I'm grateful And instead of being hateful I will be the one to cheer you on Cause everyone deserves a chance so come on! Yes sir I'm way too drunk and gone But this ain't no reason for me stop the fun And this is pretty much the end of my lyrics I've got stuff on SoundCloud with my "horrible" voice in it So if you've found me worthwhile just give me clearance To open up your mind and give me that chance Don't want no words flying off to space without you in it This really is the end of my introduction But no worries there's plenty of stuff in production -Soul signing off Peace blessings and best of luck to all (:
  10. Growing up in switzerland was hard, showing up to school feeling like a retard, not only because i kept failing my report card, but because i never felt accepted on the schoolyard. Imagine beint sarrounded by people you want to talk with, but they treat you like filth and keep on spreading a myth, that you can't understand, because you're fron kangarooland. i tried my best, to learn german for the test, kept on making progress until i controlled it fully, that was when i had to deal with my bully. He was the stereotypical dibshit, the billy madison misfit, it was almost like in a movie skit. He made me feel like i belong in a pit, always called me skinny Pomfret. My dad introduced me to the boxing district, made me get fit, for this hit. Heres a hint, after that all the myths were extinct and he couldn't eat any mint, because his tooth had a dent. Then everything was cool for a while, untill we had to choose a work trial, in an envirment where we feel no denile. Already by the age of two, i knew, what proffesion i was going to do. So there was no time to loose over what proffesion i was going to choose. By the end of the semester, i wanted to be a hairdresser. I achieved, the vision i pecieved. Even a year earlier than my class mates, that gave me all these hates, for opening the gates in my life, that apparently make me end up without a wife. They kept on calling me gay, i wonder what they would say, if they knew, i see more girls a day, than they see from july until may.
  11. In my dreams I met a girl Floating out in space I thought that I knew her, But I didn’t recognize her face And we talked like we’re same With intertwining fates And in her eyes I could see We were more than just soul mates Like crystalline she spoke The words that she transpired Picking only fragments Of the knowledge she’d acquired She said I offer you a chance to fulfill an odd obsession We are each lacking something In the other one’s possession She said The Everything connects Yet it’s all so far apart As she looked out in the blackness At the distance to stars I can see all in The Everything And I’ll offer you the power To see what you can see But only for an hour And in exchange I’ll be free To see how you see And after a time we’ll go back To the way we used to be She said people are alike But, I’m so very different I explore The Everything The Everything’s my realm But you can be like me With eternity to see Existence…what a strange word When you’re standing at its helm And before I could answer She knew of my reply Like an echo of that moment Resounded in the sky And as I tried to form the words Time was swept away I could feel The Everything Like a magical array I looked and I saw me Staring back at me Which was her inside my body Something I could not foresee And then, just like that She was gone and I was there Staring at The Everything Alone yet so aware Questions make more answers In The Everything you find And answers make more questions Than answers can define Cause The Everything connects Yet it’s all so far apart And you can dwell inside the past Where The Everything would start Cause The Everything connects And time can be transcended If you wished you could see Just how The Everything had ended And the hour went by quickly Yet it never seemed to end And once again I laid eyes On The Everything Guardian And just like before As quickly as can be We switched places once again With her looking back at me And happily she thanked me Though her happiness seemed sad In The Everything, all seems infinite Cause its everything you’ve had There are only silly little pleasures Cause The Everything you knew Is never changing As others pass on through I knew this from the glimpses I had in that short time I asked her did she discover What she had set herself to find She looked as to the ground But it was still the stars above And said “My existence is in solitude While people search for love” That’s what makes people all alike While I’m so very different I explore The Everything The Everything’s my realm But you, you’re just like me With eternity to see Existence…I shall miss it While I’m standing at its helm My time in The Everything Was coming to an end And I couldn’t say if I’d see The star born girl again I thanked her for the time And before I left I said “You should give up The Everything And have something your own instead” And as she kissed me Gently on the cheek I closed my eyes for an eternity Or was it only for a blink But, when I opened them I found I awoke inside my bed With the girl and The Everything Just thoughts inside my head I know people are alike Yet still so very different I explored The Everything The Everything is well But she, she was just like me With eternity to see But Her existence had an ending That’s different thanks to me
  12. Hi my names Eric Frew "ER IC" (Eric's Rodeo of Imaginative Concerns) I'm 21 years old from Scotland, Glasgow. I've made electronic music, sampled and arranged since I was 12 or 13 and two days ago I wrote and recorded my first song. I plan to progress in light hiphop drum patterns, soft vocals and real strings/ keys. This is my first attempt and my first time singing so all support is appreciated and I take all criticism very welcoming! I record everything on my iphone. I've made two songs in two days and I've had great feedback from a lot of beautiful people. All I want is to spread love and share life with you! Grà dh Mà thair Tìr You can find samples of my music here, I am very grateful to anyone who takes the time to listen and I hope I connect with you in some way, it's all love
  13. Music has always inspired me, it is always by my side. It gets me going on, keeps me on my toes. But For all those music lovers out there, Here's a question from my end. How strongly do you think you connect to music?
  14. Praying all day everyday im fallin to my knees asking the Lord to help guide and forgive me. Silently lying on my bed thinkin then it pours. 15. So This Is Love... By Erin Ferrier Twinkle my little star I don't care how far you are I can see you sparkle, I know you shine I could never leave something so beautiful behind. You are mine and I am yours Perfection radiates from your pores Like the diamonds in your eyes A magnetism you can't disguise We could stop the hands of time Love stays youthful and in its prime. It's uncontrollable, a powerful drug Stops my heart with a simple hug. Almost takes away my breath, Leaving us together until death.
  16. I love how people dismiss my ideas, then later they use them as if it was their own. this is all I have to say to them ....WHATEVER! The most recent case. A poetry site I used to be active at. I suggested that they have something when you sign in that tells you which poems have new comments. At the time, you would see a list of ever poem you had and beside it where links with a number, example (3) would mean you had 3 comments if you had 1 new comment on that poem it would say (3)(1). Now, these links are very small. and for members who have hundreds of poems, its a bit of a pain in the ass to look through them all to see if they have new comments. Hence, my suggestion.. well the staff and many members said, thats a stupid idea, you can just look at the list and it will tell you... yea, I just signed into my account there.. guess what the newest feature is? upon login you now get a list of your poems with new comments.. hmm wonder who thought of that? like I said.... whatever
  17. Well, you know that "Hollywood 48 Hour Miracle Diet" came out quite a few years back, well its still on the market. The past month or so I have gained a few lbs. prolly about 5. so anyways, this diet. heres the deal. you eat/drink nothing but this special juice and water for 48 hours and you can loose UP TO 10 lbs. so ok I figure why not. It sais on the bottle GREAT TASTING!!! So what can the harm be? drink some good juice, loose a few lbs. ... yea well I just started it and well.. all I have to say is.. Its a good think you have 4 hours to drink 8 oz's of that shit then you get a 2 hour break before starting again, because IT TASTES LIKE CRAP!!!!!!!!! 18. How sick are people, what has the world come to? what has happened to us that parents murder their own children? and in such cruel ways. What has this world come to when mothers put their infants in the microwave??? not just one case, but two I heard of. one in 99 and one in 05 that I heard of this am on the news. WHAT THE f*ck IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE!!!!!!!! how could you bear a child only to be so cruel to it? I just dont get it. I really am a believer that people should need a license to have kids. mental evaluation and check ups every 6 months. thats why I say. people like this would not be allowed to own pets, so why children? what the hell has this world come to. It kills me to think that my child/children will grow up in a world so cruel. I seriously am going to consider home schooling for them when the time comes, either that or I would rather not have kids if this is what they will have to deal with. I cant even bear watching/listening to the news. someone tell me what is wrong with this picture.. the damn NEWS!!!!! And people wonder why I dont want to watch it. of course I want to know whats going on in the world but what the f*ck, theres some things in all honesty I dont want to know about, I wish I could be completely naive to the cruelty of this world. because what kind of existence is it that the mere act of watching the damn news breaks your heart every day.
  19. why is it that no matter how hard some people try, theyre never good enough? I try so hard, I work my ass off all week. I even stayed more than 3 hours overtime on friday to get an order out. Every day I go above and beyond and yet still Im not worthy of anyones respect. I try so hard to prove myself but then I have these people who spend THIER time trying to sabatage me. Then. the man I love dosnt even respect me. Tells me he will give me anything I ask for, Do anything I ask. All I asked was that he not do anymore work on our house untill I get there so that we can do it together. what does he do all day? works on the house, comes back late at night, and i ask him why he did it and he said he couldnt just sit there all day doing nothing. so i ask. what about spending time with me? but no, im not good enough he had to not only leave me home alone all day, but while doing so, do something that i had asked earlier and he agreed NOT TO DO!!! im not worthy of anyones respect aparently. not the people i work so hard to help. god if you had any idea how much i endured with this guy. how much pain i took for him, and this is what i get, he cant even respect a simple wish of mine. why should I bother to try when im never going to be good enough???
