Hi Someone local recently asked me where I sourced the stuff I used for my music videos. I'm repeating my response here on Songstuff as it may help someone else. This information is all personal choice based on my own requirements, preferences, budget, prejudices, style, laziness, etc.. So someone else may well choose differently. For music videos I would LIKE to video myself (or someone else) miming the tracks or 'acting' ... a great way of generating lots of footage quite quickly. But, a) I'm no oil painting and have no desire to perform in front of camera, and b) I do not have the skills or interest to try and marshal other people to help out. So, instead, I look for imagery that will describe the content or mood of each song. When approaching the end of recording The Flat White Album towards the end of 2019, I conducted a wide review of sites offering imagery. HD (1920x1080) was fine for me as it is less processor-heavy when editing and applying effects, and most modern 4K TVs do a good job of upscaling. Where possible, I always use video as it is dynamic and is good for filling large chunks of time. By contrast, stills are only good for about 5-10 secs to hold the attention, therefore you need a lot, although GOOD stills CAN be better than video and high-res images allow you to zoom in and pan across, revealing exquisite detail. The major stock libraries like Shutterstock are too expensive to justify use as I earn only a few cents from music streams. So, after all the comparisons, I ended up choosing and using Artgrid.io, a recent arrival on the scene in late 2019. Its strengths included: Being video-only, high quality and often 'artistic'. All the early bugs with the interface have been ironed out. T&Cs that were short and crystal clear (private or commercial, any platform, and perpetual rights) It offered a wide range of clips (and many more were added each month since then) Each ‘story’ had multiple clips of the same actors/scenes/lighting ... (most of the other sites had far fewer clips that would work together seamlessly) Effectively unlimited downloads per day. Entry level was US$299pa (one of the cheapest around). Within my 12 months membership I managed to complete 26 videos for The Flat White Album (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laI4VpOutds&list=PLvCWgm9uEHNvpDJAnGUDPxH7bDl1FVn9g), and 12 videos for Not All It Seems – Redux which was done soon after (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMYpjk5Y720&list=PLzoPh-b4qN3G3I7UiA3V4fbExy-aVxqCX). A considerable feat within 12 months but really great value ... less than $10 per music video! I’ve since let membership lapse and have now gone back to the free stuff (Pixabay.com, Pexels.com, Unsplash.com and Jumpstory.com) plus a $30 lifetime stills site (Scop.io). If you ever want to chat about video or music production, I’m always happy to share my limited experience. Cheers, Greg (Australia)

Art Of People is a new experimental musical collective led by Toxus's leader and canadian artist Boney Hill. The goal is to gather musicians from around the world to make some interesting music, and maybe even release an experimental album out of it (or even many !). Here's how the project is gonna go ; - Each musicians involved in the project can send a simple and short recording/tablature/sheet music/idea to the email* at the bottom of this post (note that your recording itself will be used as a demo that I'll re-record for the album !). - In the email, you can ask specifications about how the riff/melody/idea should be played (the nuances, the effects that would make the riff shine, the mood of it, etc.). - I'm gonna mix in and add your composition to other people's compostions to, if enough people are participating to the project, hopefully release it as an experimental record. - And voilà ! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTES TO JOIN THE PROJECT ; - It's for all ages. - It doesn't matter if you're not that advanced at your instruments really, beginners to professionnels can join the project. - It's an experimental project, which means the albums and releases under the Art Of People project are focused purely on the experimental side of music (so if you're not that much into ambiant, experimental and psychedelic side of music, the releases once made might not be what you envisioned when sending your compositional idea). - All credits will be given to the people who helped wrote a song where their composition was used in. - No vocalists or lyrics needed (since the tracks will mainly be instrumentals). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- TO BE PART OF THE PROJECT/IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ; boneyhillmusic@gmail.com* ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hope we can work together soon ! Boney Hill

hi, i'm new to this forum, but i wanted to ask you something. i have a friend in UK whom i used to make music with. I moved out some time ago and i'd like to continue our music collaboration somehow. what are you using for online music collaboration? i tried dropbox and email, but we usually get stuck with that and the process tends to be rather slow... any ideas?

I'm wondering what are some sites / forums that you guys use to promote your music online! I got a lot of videos and random covers and things that I have seen others get a successful following doing but I am having a hard time with it. For example right now I am using, - Sound Cloud - Youtube - Facebook - Twitter - Reverb Nation - Band Ladders Threw Facebook As you can see all of these things put my music out there to be found but it's having it available to be found that I'm having trouble with.

Stumbled across this campaign on facebook... They want to recreate the music industry as a fair place for musicians. About bloody time I say! I'm cautiously optimistic, but am worried musicians will continue to get the short end as they always do. Thoughts? I know my streaming rates aren't paying the bills.

I recently did some music for a company that makes online videos that help with educating kids on loads of school topics. I'm really excited and buzzing about it, it's close to being my biggest break so far in terms of tasty CV entry. Basically I'm sharing this to everyone so sorry for the shameless self-promotion here but have a look and see if you like it! Also, this isn't really just for self-promotion, I'm a guy who really genuinely appreciates feedback and criticism! There's nothing I can or will change in the music or the mix (as it's already been sent to the comapny and I've got other things to work on etc etc) but if you have any thoughts for next time or things to think about then it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
