  1. ********* Hi all - I have added an updated version of the song within the topic and left the original here if anyone wants to listen to it... Cheers ******** Hi all - it's a bit quiet in here at the moment. Finally managed to find time to sit down and try and come up with something new - started this today. I like the little middle 8 (**cough**) bit and would like to work out how to get it to fit, as it sticks out like a sore thumb at the moment. Just looking for feedback and crits on music and lyrics. Also on how the mix is sounding at the moment. Cheers https://soundcloud.com/moodman-1/midnight-hour-24022017-2235/s-TN04a MIDNIGHT HOUR (music/lyrics by Richard Tracey) V1 How do you say you're sorry When there's nothing left to say Do you feel your life has been complete When you've given it all away V2 All the questions needing answers Are just left there in the wind All the righteous and the pious Take no notice that you've sinned CHORUS In the Midnight Hour You will come alive In the Midnight Hour You'll block out all the cries In the Midnight Hour The truth is clear to see In the Midnight Hour Is when you are truly free V3 All the things you're thinking They don't make sense to me All the battles you have lost Resigned to history But still a twinkle Is burning in your eyes No time to dwell on A life built on all your lies CHORUS In the Midnight Hour You will come alive In the Midnight Hour You'll block out all the cries In the Midnight Hour The truth is clear to see In the Midnight Hour Is when you are truly free
  2. Hi all - here is a little ditty I started late last night - I had the music done and then thought of some lyrics at 1.30 in the morning, so had to quickly sing a vocal melody so I didn't forget. Got a chance today to give it another go. It started out as a Depeche Mode type song (I was thinking of Enjoy The Silence after posting my instrumental yesterday with the same name). As you can see it's turned into something a bit different from The Mode!!! Before I continue with this one, I would appreciate any feedback... The vocals are as is, I haven't fixed them up or anything.... Cheers https://soundcloud.com/moodman-1/cross-the-universe-04022017-2016/s-8VrMD CROSS THE UNIVERSE (Words and Music by Richard Tracey) (verse) Even though we seem light years apart The distance doesn't seem to change my heart You're like a star a billion miles away A light that's getting closer every day (chorus) And I would cross the universe for you And I would cross the universe for you And I would cross the universe for you And I would cross the universe The universe for you (verse) The emptiness of space is yearning My time on this rock it means nothing I'd move the earth for you if I could Bringing it closer to your neighbourhood (chorus) And I would cross the universe for you And I would cross the universe for you And I would cross the universe for you And I would cross the universe The universe for you (bridge) I look up at the night A billion stars shining bright Which one are you..... I need to know Cause I am coming... I'm coming for you This is the right thing for me to do (chorus) And I would cross the universe for you And I would cross the universe for you And I would cross the universe for you And I would cross the universe for you The universe for you
  3. ***** HI ALL - I'VE POSTED A NEW VOCAL VERSION ON PAGE 2 - WOULD APPRECIATE ANY CRITIQUE... CHEERS ****** Hi all, this was originally going to remain as an ambient instrumental piece (already posted as Ethereal in the Instrumental section), but on @MonoStone suggestion, I have added lyrics and vocal. Dek thought maybe go down the David Sylvian route, which I decided to do, hence the strange title and subject matter It is by no means finished - the vocal, lyrics, arrangement etc need work, but I am just looking for feedback on all the parts that are there at the moment. Does anything work? Is there parts that don't work? Am I finally going mad?!?!?! - I was trying to make the vocal sound a bit strange to go with the content - a bit ethereal so to speak. Any critique would be most welcome... Cheers Lyrics (feel free to critique) Can you pay The ferryman There's a cost He will demand If you don't have the coin He will not take you on He will leave you to wander Acheron Charon Help me out Please I just want to see my family If you can let me on your boat Then I know that I can go on home If you're lost Or if you know Just how far You must go With the souls of the others Who can't move on You will be left to wander Acheron Charon Help me out Please I just want to see my family If you can let me on your boat Then I know that I can go on home
  4. Howdy folks, Our band, Jerkatorium, is back with another entry for a songwriting & recording competition. This time around the arbitrarily chosen song title is High School Safety Pin Parade. When I heard the title, I immediately thought of the cool punk rock kids in my High School, so I wrote a song about them. I'd love any feedback (especially negative feedback) on any aspect of the song that comes to mind. High School Safety Pin Parade by Jerkatorium Verse 1 pins and patches, cutting classes all day, out by the smoking lounge wild and lawless in black nail polish they'll take whatever they can scrounge Chorus 1 in the high school safety pin parade get your degree in the high school safety pin parade Verse 2 plaids and flannel, let's dismantle those lame, old societal norms hair dyed brightly, shaved or spikey gotta have that punk rock uniform Chorus 2 in the high school safety pin parade if you wanna be in the high school safety pin parade Extended Chorus 1 high school where anarchy rules in the high school safety pin parade Verse 3 spikes and leather, ripped up sweaters and studs, the kind that you screw in chains and zippers, laughs and snickers you know they’re never gonna let you in Chorus 3 to the high school safety pin parade where standards matter the high school safety pin parade Extended Chorus 2 high school where everyone's so cool in the high school safety pin parade Bridge you know that you gotta go on display you know that's it's all for show in the high school safety pin parade Verse 4 straps and buckles, swollen knuckles from fists, to the side of your head boots and braces and lipstick traces it’s how you look, not what you’ve read Chorus 4 in the high school safety pin parade you'll get hammered by the high school safety pin parade in the high school safety pin parade so enamored with the high school safety pin parade
  5. "Finished" this song today so it's still super rough, just recorded it on my phone. Need a lot more practice with the guitar playing/vocals but any constructive criticism with the lyrics/structure/rhythm etc. would be much appreciated. Thanks Verse 1: Red wine and closed doors Touched the sky on your floor It was all a thrill at the start Caught onto your old tricks It was only skin to skin But you wanted me to feel that spark Pre-chorus: I fell from so high Just for fun We lit up the night Before we turned to dust Chorus: We were like fireworks But the pain was a slow burn Cuz you didn’t feel it in your heart The ground crumbled where I stood Was it because of her that you had to go and make your mark Well boy, I hope she broke your heart good Verse 2: Was it all play pretend? You say we’re just friends Brushed me off so casually Said the word to make me stay Just air to fan the flame Tragic serenity Pre-chorus Chorus Bridge: Broke your heart good Like you did mine, Never understood Tell me why Chorus
  6. Hi Folks Here's a new song that I wrote and recorded with my better half. Nits and crits welcome. Concrete Written and performed by Staypress with Elizabeth Greenway featuring James Griffiths on guitar V1 There's one thing of which I'm certain, puts a ring around my heart You're the one I can be sure of and that's a start When I'm down and feeling helpless and there's nowhere left to go You're the one I can rely on, you give me room to grow Chorus You and I are connected at the heart You and I felt like soul mates from the start You and I have a love that is complete We are concrete V2 When my confidence is waning and my self respect is low You inspire me in the darkness, you show me where to go When I'm low and overburdened you give me a helping hand You're the one who lends a shoulder and you understand Chorus You and I are connected at the heart You and I felt like soul mates from the start You and I have a love that is complete We are concrete
  7. Hi all - because I can't just get on with all the stuff I have started this year, I ended up starting something else late last night. It is a very rough work in progress. I like the start part, but don't know if it should remain a verse or change to a chorus, or if the chorus I have at the moment should become a bridge!!! Excuse the singing, it was a rough one to get an idea of a melody over the music and it was quite late on last night, so didn't want to wake anyone up. The title is a place holder at the moment and probably the lyrics for what is the chorus at the moment are ad-libbed and place holder. I quite like the lyrics for the verse, but not sure of the last line. Any thoughts at this time would be a big help. Cheers Lyrics so far (words and music by Richard Tracey) I've not regretted what I've done I've been the father and the son I've been together and I've been as one I've seen the storm, I've seen the calm I've lived through cold I've lived through warm I've been the right hand to your left arm But I need to tell you Things are going crazy Never want to feel like This is all a cliche Need to do it once As I won't get a replay Please remember me I don't want to fade away
  8. Hey all, Just wanted to run this by you. Did this as a recording experiment to try something new. First time I've put together something with both live drums and a key track that was played with no programming or note editing. Anyway, as a "live" thing and a general experiment, I'm not particularly concerned with stuff like the mix, arrangement (lacks a bass obviously), or pitchiness of vocals. One day I'll do a studio version that "fixes" some of that stuff. In the meantime, mainly looking to get thoughts on the song itself: Overall melody and concept (i.e. being a shorter, non-repeating song with essentially three verses?) Thanks in advance! Lyrics: You always talk to me, Baby, when I'm asleep. You say the same old things, Every night. But honesty, Keeps me pretending dreams, Even if all this seems, Impolite. But every word, You think that I never heard, I know that it sounds absurd, But they meant the world to me. But I don't try. An answer would only lie. And I can't imagine why, You would take the time to see... We're just two pieces in similar places, But you're moving forward, and I'm losing spaces. Yeah, I know the rules, I just don't know the game. So I’m gonna roam, wherever the wind blows. Soon I'm coming home, so unlock the windows, If I can't get in, I'll have no one to blame.
  9. Hey, this is santa talking to you, or someone more humble ! ho ho ho This is my last contribution before saying goodbye to 2016.Let's say this is about recent turns of events that terrify me to my very soul. Ha ! Skub helped me getting this in correct english and he also breathed good lines when necessary.Hope you'll find a minute or two to pinpoint all the flaws !Stop, disarm and leave out the fictionLose the robe and show me you're real !We are from the jinxed generationTrading flesh for money, bad deal !No air, no room, no god in the skiesFrom the start, you were told not to moveFear will sure cut you down to sizeNow clap your hands and Santa will groove !Chorus I've caught a glimpse of your powerA true compassion for each otherDon't fall for the liesOf the clown in disguiseTime to make up your mind !In the woods lie sleeping the offspringLocked in chains by a fistfull of liesMice unaware of the deadly springHypnotized by some old lullabiesTime and again you were given an optionBut the footprints were so hard to followEntangled in the system malfunctionHang up the phone and let the wind blow !

  11. Hello folks! reworking the first song the band i'm in wrote many years ago. thought it was quite a simple song, but pretty sentimental to me. Looking for comments about anything! Looking to see how i can refine this! ===================================== lyrics: ===================================== [verse1] Don’t ask me where I'm going Well, You don't have to know There's nothing left to worry You can just let me go [pre-chorus] What now my love, Now that you're gone, I'd be a fool To go on and on… What now my love, You cant let go, Why say Hello? [chorus] Slowly yet for sure I can’t seem to remember your smile Slowly yet unsure I thought I would Get over you someday [verse2] Don’t have to think about me Just go do what you love I’ll pick up all the pieces I'll be fine alone [pre-chorus] What now my love, I’m not that strong, I can’t get on When I’m left all torn What now my love, Won’t you hold on Why can't it be
  12. Hi everyone! Figured I'd make this post to show the final products of the last songs I have posted for critique in here, and to thank you all again for such great feedback that really helped me to improve my songs. I released my EP yesterday! Since I posted the songs here I've had a drummer and a bass player play on them, and got the tunes professionally mixed and mastered. Three of them I had up for critique in here, and then there's one new song on there too. (I've added the vocal harmonies to the choruses on Where I Stand, as you wished for David. Thanks a lot for that suggestion, it really made a difference ) Thank you all again for all feedback, you were of GREAT help! Here's the Spotify link, add to your playlist and subscribe if you like! 14. Hi all - started this tonight and was hoping for some feedback before I continue. I cannot get my head into my music at the moment, so hoping for some inspiration. This is a first draft work in progress. There is no bridge/middle 8 thingie yet, but all comments are welcomed on the music and lyrics (the lyrics need tweaked). ReBorn (lyrics and music by Richard Tracey) A flicker burning in the night I walk towards the sound of your voice Booming in my head I know that I am waiting for the moment I'm ReBorn Just like a butterfly bursting Out of it's cocoon My moment's come Can you feel it Can you see it Do you know just how to dream it Can you make it Can you break it Do you know just how to take it It feels like I'm feeling life For the first time (Do you know how good it feels) It feels like I'm feeling life For the first time (Do you know how good it feels) I feel the sun upon my face As I stand naked looking out upon a world That once Knew what I was before I started thinking for myself I knew that I must rewind to a point Where I'm with you My only hope Can you feel it Can you see it Do you know just how to dream it Can you make it Can you break it Do you know just how to take it It feels like I'm feeling life For the first time (Do you know how good it feels) It feels like I'm feeling life For the first time (Do you know how good it feels)
  15. Hi all, it's been a while since I was last on the forums due to work and family commitments (never seem to have any time to myself at the moment - there might be a song in that somewhere!!), but I have just recorded an idea I had and wanted to know what everyone thought. It is a rough draft at the moment and the vocal is a guide for timing and the lyrics etc (I am still taking medication for my pro-lapsed disc in my back and they play havoc with my throat and voice!!). The arrangement isn't 100% yet, I've got ideas for a bit of automation and certainly more sounds and counter melodies going on in the background, but just wanted to see if I was on the right track with this one. Any critique is welcome... there isn't much going on in the mix as there is only about 5 tracks so far. I also mucked up one of the lines in the chorus near the end - just ignore..... Cheers, Richard - I'll have a listen to some of your newer tracks this week and hopefully get a couple of comments posted.... Lyrics: MY CONFESSION (music and lyrics by Richard Tracey) VERSE 1 The writing was upon the wall The past catching up with me The little white lies I once told Were starting to unfold VERSE 2 And all the people that I hurt Their tears were drowning me And the weight of all the guilt Crushed the walls I built CHORUS x2 And this is my confession This is how it's going to be This is how we're going to see All the things that save me VERSE 3 And now I wish for a second chance To show what I've become Renewed with a driving force A man full of remorse VERSE 4 On the ground upon my knees To plead forgiveness I don't want to forget All of my regret CHORUS x2 And this is my confession This is how it's going to be This is how we're going to see All the things that save me BRIDGE CHORUS to end
  16. Have you ever been lead on? Gotten mixed signals? Felt ever confused by a woman, or a man as far as their intentions are concerned intimately? Thats what this song is about. You say you're not ready, but you're standing on the starting lineRev your engine, flash your lights, The tension before the crime.I push you away, but you come back to me like rhyme. You say you’re not ready, but you're standing on the starting line. Are you coming Am I goingAre we starting our love flowingAre you comingAm I goingDancing’s starting my love flowingLean close to tell me gossip Lean away from my caressYou show me all the body looking fine in that red dressI tell you games are what you play, but then you pass the diceI let the go a winning toss but defeat is this games price. We’ve come all this way and desires in your eyesA Beautiful thing to smell and see, but dangers in disguiseWe could spend the night loving life awayI know I should be free from you if tomorrow I hope you’ll stay. Are you coming Am I goingAre we starting our love flowingAre you comingAm I goingDancing's starting my love flowingI feel you spinning roundMy heads in space feet off the groundLove it feels like poison gas I can’t breathe now without your maskRockets prepped Just count downEngines primed fuels soundLIght the fuse it's time to jetI don’t know where i’ll end up yet.Are you coming Am I goingAre we starting our love flowingAre you comingAm I goingDancing's starting my love flowing
  17. Hi all, while I am trying to get myself motivated to do some of the tracks I am working on and to stop me composing a new one each day (started 2 over the past 2 days!!), I decided to listen to some of my older stuff that I haven't bothered my backside doing anything with..... Below is a song I wrote with one of my friends who plays guitar in 2013/2014 ish. We did a rough sketch in about an hour (before we had to pick the kids up from school) and it was only about a minute long. I took that and created this arrangement and fired on lyrics and vocals. It is not complete and needs a bit of work, but it would be interesting to see what you all think. Cheers Lyrics: Come With Me (music by Richard Tracey and Graham Stephen - lyrics by Richard Tracey) Verses Do we ever find the things we want Do we ever find the things we need If we want to we can hold on tight To all we can see Do they ever have to find the time Do they ever have to dance all night If they want to they can all give in To all they can be Chorus Come with me And I'll make you see All the things we are meant to be Come with me Cause I am the key And I'm here to set them free
  18. Okay, promise this will be the last new track I'll post this week and I will get back to listening and posting comments on other people's tracks etc. I started this one today and got right into the groove with it, so would be interested to hear what you all think of it so far. It is still a work in progress and vocals are first draft. Lyrics aren't complete for the second verse part. Any critique is welcomed. Cheers Lyrics so far: Cloud Nine v1 The moment has come And you know what you've got to do (got to do) There is somewhere that you've got to go That's deep inside you (deep inside you) v2 If I could give a helping hand To wake the feeling (wake the feeling) Then we can start the process Of your inner healing (inner healing) Chorus Listen to your heart Listen to your head Listen to every word that's said Listen to your fears Listen to your dreams They will show you the way ahead All the little things don't mean nothing If you've got something you can bring And if you can find a way to shine You can live your life on cloud nine v3 (placeholder) The moment has come And you know what you've got to do (got to do) There is somewhere that you've got to go That's deep inside you (deep inside you) v4 (placeholder) If I could give a helping hand To wake the feeling (wake the feeling) Then we can start the process Of your inner healing (inner healing) Chorus Listen to your heart Listen to your head Listen to every word that's said Listen to your fears Listen to your dreams They will show you the way ahead All the little things don't mean nothing If you've got something you can bring And if you can find a way to shine You can live your life on cloud nine Bridge Listen to your heart Listen to your head Chorus Listen to your heart Listen to your head Listen to every word that's said Listen to your fears Listen to your dreams They will show you the way ahead All the little things don't mean nothing If you've got something you can bring And if you can find a way to shine You can live your life on cloud nine
  19. Hi all, I have thought long and hard about posting my first track for critique and after seeing the recent posts from MonoStone, have decided to revisit a track I started in December 2015, which I couldn't work out what to do with. This is a very early work in progress and took about an hour to get to this state. I would appreciate any critique as well as where you think the track could go - does it need something else added - what to do with the lyrics etc. There is no real mixing of the tracks at this time, so don't really know if anything sounds muddied. Anyway, any input would be much appreciated. Cheers Lyrics (so far) DESIRE And I I can see the fire I can see the desire In everything we've done And I I can see the light I can see the fight In everything you do And every dream you hold on to It means nothing to you And every dream you give away A penny for another day (the lyrics repeat - this was to give me an idea of what could come next - unfortunately, I didn't revisit the track)

When you’re no longer wanted The world can feel so cruel You’d jump into a fire Just to feel the warmth you knew When you’re no longer wanted You’ll break your cardinal rules Your heart cracks wide open And will lose its lovely hue Darkness around You feel the pain inside Lost hope for ever finding That love which always hides Will you always be searching of a life you’ll never find Or will you learn to love the man The one the mirror shines When you’re no longer wanted The words they seem all true The ones that say its time to stop You won’t ever make it through When you’re no longer wanted Future days are gloom A broken mix of chances That you’ll never get to do Darkness around You feel the pain inside Lost hope for ever finding That love which always hides Will you always be searching of a life you’ll never find Or will you learn to love the man The one the mirror shines Will you learn to love , Will you learn to fight, Will you learn that love, Is really worth the fight Will you stay the course, Or will you break at night Will you learn to love Will you learn to love Will you learn to love Will you learn to love Its a new one a wrote recently .

  22. So, since I've been told I have a odd, tenor voice in a positive light, only one in a negative light, I want to know if there is a higher chance of vocalists with a odd kind of timbre being successful? Is it not or is it a coincidence that the list of vocalists below made it even with a voice that's not necessary the voice of a Angel? Geddy Lee (Must I have to say it...Rush) Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy) Tim Armstrong (Rancid) Axl Rose (Guns N' Roses) Dexter Holland (Offspring) Brian Johnson (AC/DC) Greg Grffin (Bad Religion) Serj Tankian (System Of A Down/Solo Artist) Something tells me the A&R's look out for a different type of timbre. Let me know what you think.

  25. Though it might not be an absolute necessity for a singer to have a wide vocal range, it does prove to be a huge asset when it comes to giving a powerful and emotional performance. Singers such as Freddie Mercury (Queen), Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) and Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge) are great examples of singers who've shown vocal power and range being used to its maximum potential. Even for an experienced singer, the vocal range cannot be expanded in a day or two. It needs consistent and dedicated vocal routines and the right technique used in combination. The following article presents you with a few exercises and tips to help you expand your range without pushing and straining your voice but through the application of correct and proven techniques. http://www.songstuff.com/vocals/article/3_ways_improve_your_singing_range/ Be sure to share and like the article if you find it useful.
