Some guys I know use a pretty basic home-setup, works well though;

macbook pro

xenyx1222fx external mixer

audacity / protools

Use to use garageband but exporting on that thing is a nightmare

I use a Dell Precision M6400 with a MOTU 828 Mk2 running Sonar X1. My main microphone is a RODE NT2.

Simple video with room mics is good for a quick draft "what do you think" but the days for substandard demos or finished tracks has really gone. People, especially record company A&R men, expect a pro quality finish to audio and video. So I would recommend HD minimum with a proper mic set up for even home demos.

Sonar X1 is really very good but you could take a look at the latest version of cubase and abelton live

I'm running Windows XP (yay for old school). I use Audacity to record with a guitar, patch chord and computer mic. I am going to try and start using pedals soon, but that just complicates things (audio levels, you know, trying to get the vocals and guitar even so one isn't drowning out the other). I don't do full band stuff yet, but Guitar Pro seems (to me) to be a good idea (for rough works).
