Desert Island Discs

Recommended Posts

Has anyone started this here before?

An old radio show thing, I guess everyone knows how it goes? It's something I've thought about before, but really not easy... and it's a good way to be nosey and find out what makes people here tick musically...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Simple idea/rules -

You know you're about to be stranded on a desert island, there's no way off the island ... no hope of rescue... there's also no tv, radio or tinternet (it's a desert island!)...but plenty of fresh food and water naturally on the island, so it's gonna be a long life there.

Before you're stranded you have time to grab a wind-up music player, and choose 10 albums... and that will be the only music you'll ever hear again.

So you'd better choose wisely (And you can't choose Various Artists Compilations! That's cheating!).

........ if anyone wants to play along then??? (oh and I think it'd be good to post links to songs on youtube or whatever if available and if not against Songstuff rules).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PS. I'm not posting my own yet, because it'll take me ages to really think about it, and I'll feel really stupid if I'm the only one joining in!!

Phew... I'm not on my own.

I had to really think hard about this, ten isn't enough!! I've already swapped some out... the Sex Pistols had a fight with the Grateful Dead, and Nick Drake booted the Stone Roses off... and how can I only take one John Martyn album!? (and again... now Daevid Allen had to go... can't be stranded without Hunky Dory.. -

1. John Martyn - One world

2. Cocteau Twins - Treasure

3. Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left

4. David Bowie - Hunky Dory

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G10Co3HB8kc

5. Jeff Buckley - Grace

6. The Knife - Silent Shout (the live album...though the included DVD would be useless)

7. David Sylvian - Everything And Nothing (ok it's a comp of his but it's the one I'd take)

8. The Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks, here's the Sex Pistols

9. Stan Getz & João Gilberto  - Getz/Gilberto

10. Genesis - Foxtrot

LOL  I don't listen to CD's or .mp3's now (excpet online), and I wouldn't be grabbing for any pre-recorded music to be stranded with.  I don't even have any to grab.  I'd want a guitar though, and I'd be grabbing that. To be stranded without a guitar . . . well . .  just let me die.   :)

You're not allowed the guitar... and damnit I wanted to nosey at what your list would be!

Clarification please  ....did you intend this to include greatest hits collection?.

If you didn't, that'll be a game-changer for me.

Well I kind of thought no 'best of' but then I did slightly cheat on one though it's a specific collection not a best of.... but then David totally cheated and chose a load of best ofs!! So I guess anything goes now!

In no particular order. Each gives me the exact flavor of the essence of each band I would crave.

Van Halen - Fair Warning

ABBA - Greatest Hits

Warren Zevon - The Wind

Pink Floyd - The Wall

Beatles - White Album

Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bullocks

Rush - 2112

Cheap Trick - One on One

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - The Live Anthology

Ramones - Ramones

Yes, I'll have Bananas Foster, fudge brownies w/no nuts, pistachio gelato, the chocolate cake from Horseradish Grill in Atlanta GA, the House of Blues' bread puddi... Huh? What? It's not a dessert aisle? Oh, it's a deserted isle? oops...

In that case (and in no particular order)...

The Beatles - The Beatles

(more popularly known as The White Album)

Seal - Seal

(the second album)

Stevie Wonder - Innervisions

Bruce Hornsby - Halcyon Days

Earth Wind & Fire - That's the Way of the World

Ohio Players - Honey

Joni Mitchell - Hejira

Steely Dan - Aja

Thomas Dolby - The Flat Earth

Jimmy Webb - Ten Easy Pieces

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

Colin Hay - Going Somewhere

I have only selected one album from any single artist (otherwise I would have had a list of albums by The Beatles or any of the other top five artists on my list).

(and there are twelve, because I had my list already made-up... one for each month...  :tt2: )

EDIT: Uh-oh... Hobo just reminded me of something; Synchronicity by The Police... I gotta bump something!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XCjBvA1E8M - Tom Petty/Damn The Torpedoes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FV_WE6RPR9M - Dire Straits/Dire Straits

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Iaca30QbOo&list=PLDDABC9B339557B4B - Bruce Springsteen/Greetings From Asbury Park

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xns6UQcCA0E -  Andy Pratt/Andy Pratt (obscure but amazing)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PAP3kN8J8w&list=PL6D8TNwbFYolkniV5B54bOJdCvld8Towd - Counting Crows/August and Everything After

I had the same issue as Skylark, though I couldn't resist 2 Springsteen albums.  I would have listed his entire catalogue, but that wouldn't have been any fun.  Honorable Mention goes to Tull and Aqualung.

Wow! Hard for me to believe that someone else included "Innervisions" in their list :thumb23:

10) "Innervisions" - Stevie Wonder....which I still own on vinyl

Yes!  :thumbup1:  And I still have the original vinyl releases for nine of the twelve on my list. (The remaining three were post-CD releases.)

(I'm still pondering who ---if anyone--- is gonna get bumped in favor of Synchronicity!)

I couldn't decide between Ghost In The Machine and Synchronicity, and that's what gave me the idea to go for greatest hits albums - WHICH WAS NOT CHEATING!   :)

Oh, that is so cheating! Why not make it a box set while you're at it?

:tt2:

P.S.  I hope y'all don't come across too many sharks in your desperate attempts trying to make it to my island to hear some Led Zep.  I can't believe no one else included them  What's wrong with youz?

If I'd also CHEATED then best of zep would be a contender to take to Cheater Island... Or even better if I'd had time to compile my own fave zep songs together, but I couldn't think of which individual album would satisfy me. Same for Tull.

Have every single one of mine on vinyl except August and everything After. If we are picking Police albums though I would bring Outandos D'amour or Regatta De Blanc. Man, I forgot Van Morrison/Moondance ... This is too hard. How can I leave Pet Sounds off the list. Dek, find a new game , this is impossible

You know... It would be possible ---if we're talking vinyl--- to very carefully shave a disc down to the midpoint and glue two halves of different LPs together! Then one could take their twenty favorite half-albums!  :eusa_think:

Anybody wanna put that list together?

Haha, not easy is it. I was surprised a bit by what it left me with after I thought long about it, I mean not even one Doors album...that was a tough decision and I might regret that...hmmm I need to think longer.

You already broke the rules! Any more and you'll be packed off to the island with albums by Racey, Westlife, and Jason Donovan!

I was just thinking... What is the punishment? Do you get rescued?  :lol2:

Seriously, though... I will chisel my list down to ten; I will. But you've gotta get firm about compilations (or I'll count my The Beatles Box as one pick!) And no re-releases with bonus cuts etc... What kinda Desert Island marshall are you?  :boat:

PS... Read the last post I just made.

Ummmm which post did I miss ?

I know... this island is destined for anarchy. Don't fancy my chances bringing David to justice..... Maybe some negotiation is needed.
