Vocals Sound Better The More I Listen To Them...

Recommended Posts

I find that when I record vocals, I often hate them a bit at first. But the more and more I listen to the song, the more I suddenly start liking them.

Is this because I'm just getting over hating my voice and finally able to hear them "for real." Because that would be good.

The bad possibility? Maybe they really aren't any good, but I just get used to them sucking!   :online2long:

Any thoughts on this phenomenon? Is this normal? Something you've experienced?

When I first started recording songs, when my vocals came in they were like fingernails on a chalkboard. Could not stand them one bit. It is a well-known phenomenon that it's hard to listen to your own voice. Kind of like the first time you ever heard your voice at all on a recorded device. While I'm still not a great singer, through other people's opinions by posting on this site, I've come to accept them for what they are. Without hearing yours, it's hard to tell whether they're fine, or you're just getting comfortable hearing it. Either way, it's always better to be comfortable and give it your all regardless of if they are great or not. The more you do that and practice, the better they will actually become.

Eek.  I'll see if I can muster up the courage to post a sample later today, but for now, definitely curious to keep hearing opinions on if people have ever experienced this.

I remember walking in a pub once and one of my songs were playing, I didn't notice at first so that's a good sign, if I dislike the vocal tone on first listen then it is normally a good signal it needs redoing.

If I don't like it at first then start to, I think to myself it's because I am getting used to it, not good!!!

If a vocal jars at any point you have to redo or remix it, be your own biggest critic.

I am not perfect and far from it but this is my opinion and how I work.

Final point : sometimes a vocal can be that different it shocks at first but it must remain pleasing on the ear.

Good Luck

Voice is a complex instrument, isn't it?

I don't know anybody who didn't hate their voice at the first time, including me. I truly understand what you mean, at the beggining is hard, like "Do I reaaally sing this BAD?" and you get depressed haha. Ok no, but didn't happen to you that you started thinking you don't worth it and a lot of doubts came out? Because it happened to me, and it paralized me for years, with fear, which was horrible D:

But then it's that point you're talking about, when you start to accept the way you sing and you realise it's not that bad really. The important thing is to train, as everything else. Voice is an instrument that need much practise. So if you have been training, I'm sure you're better than before and that's why it doesn't sound bad to you :)

If what you meant was about one specific record, like you record something and at the first time you see mistakes that, while you listen to it again, seem to desappear, what I can recomend is to stop listening to it for a few days and then listening to it a week after, for example. You will see more clearly than before, for sure, and you'll be able to correct what you don't like with a better perspective, I think.

Good luck !

This happens with me as well.  Often times, I find it difficult to listen to myself (especially at first when recording a new song).  Over time, I get used to it.  And only when I hear the song in the background and not fully conscience that it was me singing, that I realize that hey, maybe it wasn't all that bad. lol!

I thought this was just me - but I'm glad to hear this is common.

very common bro , no one really says , damn I LOVE MY VOICE !! but we learn to tweak and play with it , and it is NEVER good enough to each artist because we are our own worst crits !! we will ALWAYS find something wrong ,as we are a bit more lax with others . perfection , what a trait !!!

rock on !!

Another phenomenon, or maybe its obvious, is that when I listened to my own stuff from years ago, I do hear how "bad" I really was.. and I squirm again when I hear it now.  These were the tracks that I've listened to over and over again and my ears were desensitized at the time. lol! :)  Just the lighter side of things. :)

Cheers,

-Peter
