How do you write hooks?

Ok.

1. At the time of writing a lyric, how do you know if it is a good hook or not?

2. Are there any guidelines for different types of hooks or when to use them?

Hi Miss Barbarella,

Hope this doesn't seem like a cop-out but I think it's almost impossible to work out a good hook lyrically without the music behind it. There are lots of great hooks out there that would just be a pile of very ordinary lines without the melody/rhythm/chord-sequence/etc that sits behind the lyric.

if you know how to transfer your mental conception of the song into reality, you should be able to write hooks quite easily....

try to avoid musical cliches

i.e. the "im going crazy w/o you..." etc....

place it in an important place in the song - first last line on the chorus.

It has to be catchy and singable - you want your audience to be able to sing alomg to it.

A lot of the time it is the title of the song.

i suggest that if its a louder song then then tone it down for the little while that ur hook is about to be played but if its a softer song try and make it melodic so it will stick with ppl
