What are the biggest challenges in becoming a professional musician or songwriter?

...but besides that, it's a total and utter joy! ;-)

 

Tom is spot on though, it is a bumpy road that's for sure. Fun, but bumpy.

 

Biggest challenge besides what is mentioned above? Staying focused and consistent while getting a million rejections. Don't let them get to you!

OK....I'll add a couple more here.

• Always working non-standard hours, unlike your friends, family & most other non-musicians
• Forget about celebrating holidays in a traditional  manner because you'll likely be working
• Continually being exposed to drugs & alcohol without developing a substance abuse problem yourself
• If you're married or planning to get married, remaining that way will be a constant challenge....given the lifestyle & temptations which constantly surround you.

All the other things you listed sound hard, but manageable. This particular list is the one that'll keep me away from the flame.
