What the Heart Does

 

I know exactly what you were
I can still hear all the words
I remember why it didn’t work
And still see our little world

But I have to really think
To remember what I was
Just because the bodies match
That don’t mean the heart does

I know why I walked away
What it was I had to do
I wasn’t sure where I was going
Except for far away from you

But my memory is all reflections
Detached from what I was
Just because the body walks
That don’t mean the heart does

The story’s more real to me now
And I don’t mean to be uncouth
But for me it was all a little dirtier
More my fiction than your truth

I see now what it was you wanted
And how different I was from you
It’s true the hearts don’t match
But goddamn the bodies sure do

Something different was at stake
Then either of us knew
And maybe we got carried away
Trying to find a better truth

But it wasn’t very complicated
The struggle same as it ever was
Sometimes the bodies will match
But the heart never really does

I suppose we’ll keep on searching
Even though we know the end
There might be nothing left to find
But I guess we can both pretend

So take that little secret
It took years to get it right
Our bodies love our bodies move
But our hearts will always fight

They say the heart has function
That it bleeds and loves the world
That’s too much for a simple boy
Not enough for a complicated girl

My simplicity deceived us both
Because that’s really all I was
Maybe my heart can never leave
But that’s exactly what my body does
