Songstuff Writer and Artist Development Challenges

    By john

Independent writers and artists face several large disadvantages when they are compared to signed, mainstream writers and artists.  Disadvantages that add up to making it a competition that indies can’t win. Hell they can’t even compete.   Lack of budget and poor contacts are fairly obvious disadvantages. Lack of experience and a lack of knowledge restricts songwriters and artists alike. Lack of an overall strategy, and a limited set of incomplete tactics, makes for a critical problem

Getting My Studio Into Shape!

So, I have been reworking my studio. The purpose has been to update my core system while preparing it for future developments, both for my own music, Deep Red Sea, and of course Songstuff.   The feature photo for this post IS NOT my studio, but it does feel like that sometimes! That’s why I chose it.   One big change ups setting up the studio as a viable streaming studio. I already have a couple of good lights and a green screen, along with a couple of decent back drops... Oh boy! Embarrassing!

Hey   Ok, so I created this blog with the best of intentions and then managed to forget all about it. Eek!   There have been so many changes in the industry, that from a blogging perspective has been an embarrassment of riches, the embarrassment in this case has been my complete neglect of this blog,  while such an array of interesting, industry and life changing events have drifted passed, I commented on.   On top of the trend of changes we’ve had COVID-19 land on

Popular songs featuring the Phrygian mode and Neapolitan chord

Western music theory describes seven diatonic scales that are the basis of corresponding musical modes, among which the major and minor still dominate due to the universality of their harmonic structure. Other seven-note scales such as Phrygian, Lydian, Dorian, and Mixolydian have the status of modal modes and used mainly to create a musical atmosphere specific to a particular geographical area, historical period, or to evoke associations with various folk cultures.   Of all the modal mo

Nutshell

Been working on a track since morning till late and placed it here in the critique thread. I was really sure i am on a right track to have a potent material.    I didn't get high / or drank. I felt negativelly though. And tomorow i have to travel. And i hope i am hired since next Tuesday, however i am scared of the new job.   Now it is 23.05 - so >this was my day in a nutshell.

I Know You Hate Me

Thank you for the lies. It is like a self defense mechanism . I lie to myelf sometimes, to not to see the hurtfull truth. YOu lie to me, that you dont hate me because you are just thinking it is a good/ or rather - the what the normality wants you to do. The problem is that you really hate me, and you want to hurt me only passively, so nobody can see it.   Or you know what ? it is all bullshit. I think i can throw this idea to thrash... no, i am lying. I cant shake it off my head

Hello - I Am Not A Human...

I think i am partially a human being like you all, but not completely.   ...Sometimes, i swear, my feelings try to convince me i am a weird half-human...     > Maybe it is my self defence - trying to cover the truth - that i am a useless idiot that deserves to be punished for it's existence, and all the unfinished shit? I dont have the borders setted up, as you have. I have no controll. And  i just want to be happy, ok?  So let's f*cked it up, we are not enemies. And i thi

Back Recording Again

It's been years since I truly focused on my own music. Really, a long, long time. I think I took most of my songs offline around 2008, and only posted some song drafts on Songstuff and the sleepy backwater of my website. Most of my new songs were never recorded never mind released. Instead, for years I have focused on helping other musicians write, record and release their music. While I still plan to do that, I am, at last, back recording my music.   In truth I had decided to do that

Kim Reynolds

Hey, everybody. This one was originally scheduled to drop later this year, but I decided it might do some good to release it before the November elections. Our governor of Iowa is Kim Reynolds. This song is in protest to her "mail-in-ballot" suppression tactics. Get out there and help me vote this clown of a presidential wannabe out of office.
