  1. Thats not a bad stocking filler eh? Glad to hear it Mike
  2. JBJ: I dont recall it being so stright laced as that. David Jocobs sounds as if he's just stepped out of his spitfire. "I like the beat" was a common expression. It was used a couple of times on every show. When the Rolling Stones appeared, Charlie Watts came across as nervous and in need of confidence (or a bit dim TBH). Asked what his favourite current single was, Mick Jagger answered 'Like a Rolling Stone' by Bob Dylan. When Charlie was asked he said 'I dunno, I'll stick wiv what Mick says'.
  3. We had no access to current music, which were 45s & 33s. Ok we had a radio, but that and TV pop shows were about it. One UK show was Juke Box Jury. No, we had a 78 gramaphone, which no one used except me. There were about a dozen discs only, and the only one I liked was this one. I was very young and drove my parents nuts playing it all the time. The needle had to be replaced after about 6 plays, so there was a tray of them next to the turntable. Someone bought me a 45 single once & we could not play it of course. I didnt get a record player until I was 15. Until then, I would try to remember the songs I liked as best I could and just imagine them. I still do, and often 'improve' upon the original. Oh yes, I had to wait until I was working so as to buy my first guitar too. My mum liked Shirley Bassey and my dad liked Mantovani. Surely this qualifies as a musically deprived childhood?

    Neck Speed Myth?

the ebow is ok & I suppose useful for recording. Live use? looks like a bit of faffing about TBH. It may not have attack, but the attack demonstrated on the Hellraiser is harsh & noisy. Of those options I would prefer the ebow I think, unless the sustainiac pickup could be mellowed a bit. Nice looking guitar though.
  5. Two Janes - Los Lobos (still my favourite band)

    Neck Speed Myth?

Its just occurred to me. It could well be that for metal players letting go of the strings might be a problem. Much of their technique is dependent on muting due to all that gain. David, I imagine you would have an informed view about that?

    Neck Speed Myth?

As Carlos Santana seems to have perfected infinite sustain, his rig should point the way for all those who chase it. It doesnt seem to matter whether its a fender or PRS he uses.

Novax slimline jazz model I like the sound of this thing on this demo. It’s not affordable, nor it available to try (for me anyway). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0Is_7LGCYU#t=46
  9. I love the Strat sound. Its why I stuck with one for so long. At the moment I'm considering changing pickups, and the Fender sound is my only real guide. What different about that pickguard?
  10. Only the brass section and the singer use actual monitors in Blown Out. They mind it themselves. Pete's (singer) active monitor is excellent and he keeps it pretty dry. He uses the same settings each time so far as I can tell. The brass use an ancient foldback speaker that looks like a 1970's small TV that they prop up with an instrument case. Its crap, and it gets kicked over every other gig. Its better than nothing, but only just. My amp is my (guitar) monitor. Its the same for the Keyboard fellow. We pretty much always go through the PA. As BG vocalist, I have no monitor, and usually shout myself hoarse every gig. I would buy one, but am loath to lug around any more gear.

    Neck Speed Myth?

Thanks guys. I need to know this. Being entirely self taught, I do lots of stuff 'wrong'. For example, where I can, I string bend downwards (towards the floor) rather than the regular way. It's nice to know just how far from the path I am. Contact: I honestly didnt know what I did until I grabbed a guitar and watched myself play. For small movements over a couple of frets I 'might' retain miniscule contact, but anything more, its a complete release.

    Neck Speed Myth?

Interesting. I guess it may upset a few folk who obsess about sustain. A guitar maker maker once told me that the neck was principally responsible for sustain. BTW, I am more than happy to be shown that I am unusual (& wrong) about the neck finish. It may well be that most people do not fully release grip.
  13. I heard about this somewhere about 2 years ago. The notion of players being encouraged to lightly abrade the back of their glossy guitar necks in order to improve speed moving up & down the neck. I was of the opinion that this idea was nonsense. A couple of days ago I found this being advertised as a custom guitar design feature at a luthiers website. This disappointed me and ruined my confidence in the man altogether. Or is it nonsense? How many here keep hold of the neck when changing position? Because this is the crux of the issue. Because I don’t. I just let go. So there is no ‘sticky-ness’ nor friction involved. Sometimes at a gig, my hands may get sweaty. So I go and wash them at the first opportunity. It doesn’t matter what surface finish the neck has, excess sweat will be a nuisance. Even so, it’s never speed that is impeded, just the feel. Is this advice just another myth that some people are taking seriously?

Its pretty, but still too expensive. I'm quite sure its worth it, but its too high to aim for realistically. I have heard of Kent Armstrong pickups but dont know anything of them. I will check 'em out now.

I have been casting about for uk luthiers too. Here is an archtop for sale. The maker has only made one before (for Big Jim Sullivan) this is another of the same design. http://www.alanarnoldguitars.co.uk/LegendPics.htm http://www.alanarnoldguitars.co.uk/buy_guitars.php He has good references/reviews from what I can see.
  16. Careful what you wish for. There are zillions who will bite your arm off for that.
  17. So that's whats behind some of these crazy ads? At least they got 'something' for their money. I had just assumed they would be completely ripped off.
  18. It happened when you were tuning down to D. If you change tunings often, the strings will wear very quickly. They are also more likely to break while tuning too. When I had just one acoustic, I was constantly changing tunings to open D, G & C and back to concert again. At that stage I would replace my strings after a week. If I left them on much longer they sounded dead, and yes, I would turn my head away while retuning to protect my eyes because this was when they were likely to snap.

Ok I got 2nd Kessel one now (I forgot I was downloading a new waterfox). The fret buzz is shameful. I can see the intonation issue at about the 7 minute mark (turnarounds). I stopped shortly after that. His Misty is just what I would hope & expect though. I glad I watched this last.

I have listened to the Farlow, Smith & the 1st Greene links and see what you mean. My server is failing the struggling to buffer the Kessel ones though. It makes me really want to see them too. Maybe I should try again tomorrow.
  21. Love that Aja. I had (well still do actually) all Steely Dan's albums on vinyl. China White - Lowell George & Little Feat (forgive this interview, but I love the impromptu short performance of China White here. Lowell also demonstrates Ry Cooder's slide style later using his 11/16" socket wrench.
