    Ear Training

Working stuff out from a recording is a good way to improve. You are doing that already. Dont try too hard to figure notes out as you play along. Instead repeatedly listen to the part you want to get , get it into your head and then turn it off. In silence, try to find the notes guided by memory. If you still dont get it. Repeat the procedure. I used to do this a lot, and became proficient at ear learning. I was better than I am now. I hardly do this at all anymore, and get frustrated sometimes when I try (like you are finding).
  2. LOL Yep, me too, I used to cut picks out of sheet perpex. I didnt have much idea of what I was doing. The picks were too thin and I cut the points sharp & pointy. The opposite of what I use now. I was still using these things when I got my strat.
  3. Hi Tom, It looks as if it should be me appologising. I never intended to put you through all this soul searching my friend. I get your point entirely and agree as well. All the while we are speaking of 98% of accompanied fare that is. However, unaccompainied fingerpicked guitar instrumentals take an age to learn and perfect. So... isnt correct. This is my point. That there are important exceptions. Once this is understood both ways (& I know it is) we are in agreement once more. regards Rudi
  4. I disagree completely. The most demanding music I play is solo guitar. Its probably more serious than anything else I do. For me, songs are just a bit of fun by comparison. Would you make this suggestion to a concert pianist?
  5. I have some 3 should get rid of. These are Yamaha acoustic (about 42 years old) Washburn solid electric Epiphone mini solid electric (G sharp) The other ones are: Fylde Acoustic (rosewood back & sides) an early model Camps Spanish acoustic (nylon strings) Jackson Soloist : My gigging guitar (passive PUs) Jackson Elite : My recording guitar (active PUs) Yamaha silent : electric classical guitar Bass: Dillion Bass (active / passive PUs) Squire Jazz Master copy
  6. Are not the left & right players playing identical patterns?
  7. I failed trying to use any sort of software on PC and Mac. I'd like to get back to a tracker really.
  8. You already have my answer. You said it wasnt a reasonable effort. You obviously have had something in mind right from your first post on here. So why why dont you just say what you want to say without all this faffing about?

The quality of recording was a bit better I think. There is less intrusive extraneous noise. You can certainly sell a song Mahesh. Really good.

    Old Amp Issues

I keep on of those switch cleaner sprays in my gig bag but have only used it acouple of times (in 14 years). Sprays are ok as a temporary measure, but I agree that the pot should be replaced (no I wouldnt do it either).

Mahesh, It sounds like you getting there. I think you only need to isolate yourself briefly, to concentrate on assembling your music. The world and all its distractions are necessary before that stage to inform your song; and they are necessary after to communicate to it.
  13. I need to for the bass and the spanish guitar. The others have had the same strings for many years.
  14. The bass I bought this year has both active & passive settings. So you can switch between the two Useful if you run out of batteries.

I like the song very much. The music is beautiful and your voice very expressive. The words work if they mean what I want them to mean. I want it to be about creativity and people. I will be disappointed if its about status & money. If its about both then they cancel each other out. If its about some thing else, then I really cant say. John has been introducing some of us to multi-layered lyrics. Sometimes its a good idea to make songs mean what we want them to mean. Whatever they mean, its a beautiful song. Rudi
  16. I used to work that way, and occasionally still do. I had plenty to say about this on another thread, but the thing is lots of chord patterns occur in very different sounding songs. It wouldnt bother me using a cliched progression. It could even be regarded as a challenge.

Mahesh, I planned to hear your song last night, but will try again this evening. It sounds as if you have articulated your frustration about being in a rut. Hang in there!
  18. I imagine suitable teachers are getting harder to find. You are very accomplished. But I know what you mean. I can offer one suggestion. That is teach or coach someone else. It has helped me, because you have to start looking at things you take for granted all over again. If you are anything like me, you will find gaps, and they can be explored anew. You might even be able to pretend you have a student, and prepare for them. Better still write a series of presentations about music. Maybe even video it. That way you get to go through the same thought processes and end up with a useful resource for others.
  19. Ok John. You have seen this before. I'm convinced.
  20. Rob, 'Genesis' is a book from the Bible. Two others are called 'Kings' (Kings of Leon). Its not obvious at all. So well done for asking.
  21. Only if you cant sing. Like I said, you can sing harmonies, basslines etc.
  22. Inter-site competition. I think its a great idea. Obviously it would need setting up to everyone's satisfacton. I wonder if a non-competitive coleberation would be a gentler intro? Something like one of the critiquing areas or our lyrics challenge perhaps?
