  1. What is your problems in the first recordings? Do you mean beginning to record for the first time, or the first recording of a new project? Are you satisfied with recording with a soundrecorder or a smartphone? I never thought of using a smartphone. I use a sound-recorder. What else is there? What would you wish as a product? Microphone / mic hardware that eliminates unwanted noise.
  2. Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo - Grateful Dead live (12-30-77)
  3. Long Distance Love - Little Feat (live)
  4. Traveling Band - creedence clearwater revival (live) (hoople = ring = band)
  5. I loved this band as a nipper. I had the 2 albums but somehow missed this single at the time. Notice its in 5/4 time. Was it Mick's answer to his former boss's 'Living in the Past'?
  6. Absolutely. I fully expect a bunch of youngsters to glance at this discussion and write us all off as cranky old guys who are 'out of touch'. But you dont have to look far to find some young artists you cite the Beatles or The Kinks as their major influences. Are there any out there that feel the same about Pat Boone or the Beverly Sisters? No there isnt.
  7. Whatever kids do now, the OP was really about the innovation & quality of the music.
  8. Soul Sacrifice - Santana http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNslkIdyprw It was me that asked Rob. Though I expect Tom understood more than I have. I followed about a 3rd of what you were explaining. It helps I guess if you use a PC/MAC for music. I have repeatedly failed at doing this, hence I use a dedicated hard disc recorder now (and I'm no great shakes with that). As for stage work, I still find it easier to use another 6 guys. I somehow doubt that using Joe's guitar is massively different from using your Soloist. The best set up (electric) guitar I have ever used is an old Les Paul copy that Steve (who is a member here) did himself. It was actually too well set up for me. I am used to some string tension to fight against. His set up removed any and all effort from playing. It was better than custom set ups Ive tried from seasoned pro luthiers. In practice though, using that was only a matter of preference rather than enabling anything more technically. Thanks for the inside peek.
  9. There was a lot of artists all pulling in different directions. Only the creativity was common to all of them. Some of it was begun earlier than 65 but.. There was certainly a backlash against pop music singles. That had not happened before. Not with Rock & Roll it didnt. Part of that was the blues rediscovery, and some of it was out & out experimentation with song forms and music forms. In terms of the electric guitar it was an almost blessed period. The analog distortion amazed people. It wasnt 'really' new, but it was appreciated as a new sound, instead of shunned as unwelcome distortion. It was a bit like MSG: you sprinkled it on everything and it made everything taste good. Now we simulate those sounds digitally and most of the time get it wrong. We instinctively go for more distortion and then wonder why it is only other metal players that are listening. But I digress. I loved King Crimson & Pink Floyd at this time. Especially Floyd. I really thought that the title track 'Saucerful of Secrets' was pointing to the future. Also, as Frank Zappa identified, record companies didnt understand what was going on, so almost anyone was given a chance, and those that did were allowed to indulge themselves (if they insisted!). Ever heard the track 'Saucerful of Secrets? Can you imagine this being permitted for inclusion on a release by a young band today? Can you imagine the reception Bob Dylan would get on The X Factor? Even on here at SS we try hard to fit into well tried moulds established many years ago.
  10. Do you mean with the Mac Rob? Thank Christ for the Bomb - Groundhogs
  11. but it was great. No Chance- Houndog http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXeQqi6SqI4
  12. re: Island sounds. (when the record player is switched off) As a chronic insomniac, I am always looking for ways to assist sleeping. I once found a place that made CDs of 'relaxing sounds' -not music! One of them was a Caribbean island shore. Waves breaking on the shore and bird song. That was the description. So..... I bought a copy. It wasnt relaxing though. The waves were being driven by a howling wind which sounded like a force 7 gale. The bird song was shrieking parrots. It was awful. Free tip. Dont sleep underneath a coconut tree.
  13. 27 Spanishes - Los Lobos Happy Anniversary Rob. Glad to hear it. PS Stuck in the 80's ass? This has song lyric potential
  14. I did enjoy. I am especially impressed that Etude 4 is played with a picture of Venice(?) instead of the sheet music. Was that the correct tempo though? It was a tad too fast to make it all out. Etude 1 sounded perfect. Look fwd to the November 17th postings.

    Tuners

There is a tuner on my ancient Boss GT5, but I only need it during the summer. Even then, it often easier just to ask the keys: "Give us an E please Paul !" There is another tuner in my home recorder. That gets used every damned time. Sometimes more than once. Without these aids, I would go for a headstock tuner of some sort.
  16. metronome? @#%* NO ! They unravel the mood of the music, turning everything into a fisher-price-toytown-glee sound. A drum or hihat sound is ok as a time marker, but the metro gnome must be shot on sight.
  17. Chopsticks - Arthur de Lulli (composer) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRapSpA-dN0
  18. Oh well, at least he could tell the difference eventually. Are you on anything at the moment skylark?
