  1. I almost posted that... but left it as bait lmao Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven
  2. Hi Gang It’s a new club. The cupboards are a bit bear but we’ll soon stock it up. Feel free to say “Hi” in reply. I’m going to attach a poll to see who, at the time of joining this club, already has a Facebook Page for their music? Who advertises on Facebook using paid ads? Who has a FB Messenger bot? Etc. Hopefully we can develop guidelines for new users. Please feel free to post up your own observations and suggestions. There are many aspects to Facebook and ways to interact with it. It would be good to get a better handle on what works and what doesn’t. Additionally, this group is a good way to coordinate with other Facebook users at times of song release etc. I expect this group will cover strategies from posting schedules to Facebook Page features, Messsenger bots to running FB Groups, using videos, images and Live video, mobile and web apps that integrate with FB etc Hopefully you will also be willing to exchange what works and what doesn’t in terms of growing and expanding your fan base via Facebook. It’s a new group, so please give this place a shot and lets make it into something useful. Cheers John
  3. Hey 4 Welcome to our family
  4. Hey Gareth great to have you aboard.
  5. “Promote” pushes it to Songstuff pages and accounts. To share to your own pages, use the appropriate icon from the row of social media icons at the bottom of the post.
  6. Nielsen Soundscan have been examining the changing listening trends within the world of radio. They’ve been looking at the impact of shifting habits and cyclical trends. When trends appearing in the data are combined with Nielsen’s February Portable People Meter (PPM) ratings, Nielsen have been able to assess cycles and changes in the data over a significant period of time. Nielsen have been comparing eight years of monthly data sets. Essentially, they have been using the same formats and demographics since late 2010, which is when they completed the rollout of PPM, enabling the electronic measurement for radio. The 8 year trends are useful, but It gets really interesting when you look at the audience share for the top 10 most popular formats for millennials since February 2017, until February 2018. Pop Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR) still remains the top format, but over the last year tune-in to CHR has declined by nearly a full share point. Urban Contemporary and Hot AC and are also down, year-over-year. AC, Alternative and Classic Hits are all significantly up. Excerpts from the report
  7. Run it through a spectrum analyser. That should help visualise what you can’t hear. As TC says, a high pass should make a huge difference. Unless you want to preserve some sub bass, I would set the cut off at 80 on your vocal channel. Low frequency rumble is a common issue, being picked from traffic etc through the mic stand. Bass drum you might roll off below 40
  8. very quickly on videos.... the best thing is to upload the vid to youtube ( set it as unlisted if you don't want it to be generally available).... then just get the video link and past it into your post. the player will then magically appear Taddah!
  9. Hey Welcome to the family! I started as a kid playing classical music too (piano and violin). Good to have you with us Cheers John
  10. Welcome to Songstuff! For critique, post to the appropriate critique board as you will get much more activity there. The intro board is used to get members to tell us all about themselves so we get to know you quicker.... but many don’t check it for songs to critique. Anyhoo... welcome to the family
  11. Follower Build Strategy #1 Getting Followers By Following Posting fantastic tweets is essential to growing your following, but until you have an audience to read those tweets, to like comment, retweet and quote your tweets, your fantastic posts will lay undiscovered. It’s a classic chicken and egg scenario. To build your audience, you first need to have an audience to see your posts. This strategy gets you a seed audience. It relies upon the percentage of people who, when followed, will follow you back. Don't use this strategy in isolation, ie also tweet and interact with other twitter users. Finds followers, influencers and key people to interact with. Try to follow 50 - 500 per day (pretty easy if you do it right). Start with indie artists and writers in your genre. Use Twitter search to find the first artists, then drill down by looking at who they follow and importantly, who is following them. Give it 2 - 6 weeks before unfollowing people who don't follow you This gives them a chance to follow you and avoids penalties incurred by more aggressive follow/unfollow strategies. Don't unfollow people as soon as someone has followed you back People who do this are disliked. Users feel used. If you follow 100 one day and unfollow the same 100 the next, or even the next... Whether they follow you or not... if you repeat that behaviour a few times, Twitter will brand you a spammer and sometimes they will suspend your account. So don’t do it! There are Twitter “follower tools” for desktop, Android and iOS. We can compare notes on the best tools Initially, expect to be following 3 times more than follow you. At least until you reach 3k followers. You can then gradually shift from a follow strategy to an almost content only strategy. As you shift you begin weeding out more people who didn't follow you back, than adding new people to follow. For example, you unfollow 110 but only follow 90 new people at a time. Yet again you still wait 2 - 6 weeks before you unfollow anyone. By the time you get to 10k followers you should be following about 10k Follow : grammy winners songwriters use genre (just search grammy winner + songwriting, or + New York, or + Country etc) Find people who work for labels, publishers etc... NOT the labels themselves. They rarely follow anyone lol However the workers you can develop a relationship with and make them awar of your music. Try searching for specific lable names, or publisher names etc. Expected numbers on a "Get Followers by Following" strategy, as mentioned above: Initially follow 50-500 people per day by using Twitter search and people list of follwers (more than those they follow, though that list can also be of use, for example to find band mates, work colleagues etc). This will take you 5 mins to 45 mins depending on numbers, and on any taretting research you do. Expect to get 10% initial return on effort. ie you follow 100, you get 10 followers. As time passes that number will rise to 20% or maybe 30% if lucky. By the time you are following 1000, you might have 100-300 followers. At this point start aiming to unfollow people who unfollow you (a tool will tell you), and begin to gradually unfollow people who you followed a few weeks ago but they still are not following you (yet again a tool will tell you). By the time you reach 1000 followers, you should be following about 3000. By the time you reach 3000 followers, expect to be following 5000. At this point in time you start to shift more towards a content posting, interaction and following / unfollowing strategy where you maintain the number you follow. This way you will keep the number you are following around 5,000. Many people you follow will NOT be following you. You now start unfollowing those who do not follow you, starting with the oldest. If someone is not following you, you should have a good reason to continue following them. Every 100 you stop following, follow 100 new users. Don't unfollow someone who is following you at this stage. You will probably find that of the 5,000 you are following only some 2,000 of them are following you back. The other 1,000 people following you were picked up THROUGH that 5,000 directly, and through the interactions with your posts by those following you. By the time you reach 5000, you should be following 5,000. You continue your content posting, interaction and follow / unfollow strategy. Followed by 10,000, following 5,000 Now shift content posting, interaction and following / unfollowing strategy towards a gradual) reduction in the number of those you follow. By unfollowing slightly more than the new ones you followed. Unfollow dead accounts, ones that haven’t posted for an while etc. . Followed by 12,500, following 4,800 Followed by 15,000, following 4,500 Change to a content posting, interaction and unfollowing strategy. This is where you start getting concerned with the quality of those you follow, and who follows you. By unfollowing those who don’t interact some may well unfollow you. That is expected.... but they weren’t helping you anyway! Your growth will temporarily slow down Start unfollowing those who do not interact with you, do not like or re-tweet your stuff. You will probably find that of the 4,500 you are now following an increasing number of them are following you back. Perhaps as high as 3,500. Followed by 17,500, following 4,000 You now will be far more focused on content. None of your time is spent on following. Some time still on unfollowing. In truth the changes will have been gradual. As your initial list expands you will have spent less and less time adding new followers by following and more time gaining followers by interacting and posting. Followed by 20,000, following 3,000 Followed by 25,000, following 2,000 Followed by 35,000, following 1,000 You get the idea. You can start unfollowing people with small lists who do not interact with you. Almost all Twitter energy will be on interaction and new posts. I hope this all makes sense?
  12. Aim for: 4-8 tweets/retweets/quotes per typical day Up to 3 can be Retweets or even better quotes Make sure at least 3 are tweets you start (not replies) No more than 1 in ever 4 actually promotes or talks about your music Loads of likes On important posts make key mentions (using the @name convention) use hashtags. For example #twittercollective You can lean how to pick effective ones, and more to the point we can agree on set ones we all use for specific events. Make sure you interact with other Twitter Collective members (like and share their content, comment on their posts etc) We can fine tune this
  13. No problem Roberto. I will be posting up a few basic strategies to help you get your twitter lists started. Strategies will then adapt as your list grows. If anyone knows or discovers any other strategies I hope they will share them too. I will try and post them this evening.
  14. Names on a blue background are their names on Songstuff. I have no idea of their twitter handles. By adding them to my topic they should receive a notification that hopefully brings them to this topic
  15. First Facebook, then Twitter... next it will be Google+! Then, oh woe a blog! Welcome to the 21st Joel!

  17. When you say copyright, I assume you are meaning protecting the recording, as the song is already copyrighted? Please don't worry about sounding foolish. It is wise, and professional, to be concerned about due dilligence on copyright. Everybody starts from not knowing. Please feel comfortable asking questions. Maybe one day you will be passing on what you know and helping someone else. hell that could be next week! Later today My point is, we are all learning all the way through our music career. All of us. Forums like Songstuff are all about musicians helping musicians. So please, don't feel embarassed.
  18. Hi Are you a Twitter user? Are you using it, or planning to use it, to get the word out about your songs? Join the Twitter Collective. It's a club dedicated to working together through Twitter to kick start your activity whenever you are doing a release, post a new song or video, or for important news. Working together helps you to spread your news and grow your followers by really increasing your reach. While informal agreements can help, cueing up your fellow twitter users can really help. Giving them advanced warning helps get around posts flying by unnoticed. It gives you a chance to coordinate your music promotion. Additionally the club lets you easily exchange ideas about what works, what could work better, and what doesn't work at all. It helps you to stop repeating the mistakes of others and gives you a chance to learn and improve. This includes: What kinds of posts work best What time of day works best What balance of posting is currently getting good results What strategies are best for growing followers What strategies work to convert followers into fans What strategies work best when you are gtting started as a musician on Twitter Join the Twitter Collective today. Cheers John
  19. Certainly no response comes under "has not obtained permission". If I were you I would certainly look at YouTube's Monetization Scheme You might find this very useful: It is produced by YouTube themselves. and there is this: https://www.youtube.com/music_policies The link above is a directory of music publishers and content owners, and their KNOWN policy regarding cover songs
