  8. Hey Hannah Keep a note pad with you for jotting down ideas. I use my phone for melodies and the notes app for lyrics, though I do prefer a physical notebook. Make a habit of jotting down ideas immediately. Keep a note of common saying and interesting phrases. Then try playing with them to create opposite meanings or alternate meanings. A pastime i enjoy, especially if I am on my own, is to stop at a coffee shop and people watch and jot down what comes to mind. Observations, imagined back stories, things I overhear that sound funny/interesting Cheers John
  9. A good suggestion. I was looking into how we could do his. you will be glad to know it is implemented, with the post border in green (yellow was barely noticeable) and the time as a noob is 60 days. Thanks for your suggestion @Patchez!
  10. Hey gang Here’s a question. What is the most satisfying aspect of music making for you? It could be: the personal feeling of accomplishment it could be coming up with ideas developing ideas polishing a song to a gleam puting the song out as an entire package performing live making videos watching people enjoy your music Something else entirely What does it for you? I love every aspect of making music, but the bit that gets me, is the pride when someone sings or quotes my lyrics back to me in a way that I know they really connected with the song. Even better when I see them, moving to the music, eyes closed, singing my song, showing to everyone it means something to them. I pick that. So, what is yours? Cheers John
  11. It’s the old gene pool scenario. Ultimately the ability to survive comes from a diversity of ideas. It is not the adopting of ideas that gives strength, but giving ideas space to exist and room to grow. That way new ideas take root and current ones can spawn variations and all have room and time to develop their ultimately best versions for any number of scenarios... this all makes for choice. We can all use those ideas, knowing what they are making our choices likely to be better, stronger and us overall as more adaptive and more resilient.
  12. Hi Its an oldie but goodie. You are marooned on a desert island. Luckily you have been marooned with a working music player and solar charger. The player only has enough room for 10 albums. Here, you get to choose 10 representative tracks (One per album) and explain why those albums and why those tracks. Your reasons are up to you. So what 10 albums would you be marooned with, and what 10 individual tracks you would highlight and why. Please provide YouTube or other player links so we can hear the highlighted tracks (if you can find it). Cheers John
  13. Hey Jole, a big welcome to Songstuff! Like most communities, you will tend to get more out of a community if you put more in. Be active, make connections, and if you have goals we can help you attain, the most productive way ahead is usually to let us know what those goals are sooner than later If you need any help, just ask. Staff and members are helpful and friendly
  14. There’s a lot there I can agree with @Patchez You can also sell music via Amazon, even without going through an online music distributor: https://www.amazon.com/gp/seller-account/mm-product-page.html?topic=200354370 I know music sales (as a product on it’s own) is no longer really viable commercially but there are scenarios where it is still desirable. As for the issue with editable quotes, if you click in the top right of the quote, it will take the reader to the original post where the quote was taken from. The only scenario there is a problem, is where for some reason the original post has been edited or deleted. Most often that is not the case, although some members are in the habit of deleting their posts. I guess for most scenarios it wouldn’t be an issue unless either the person quoting is acting maliciously trying to make it seem as though the author of the quoted post was saying something they didn’t, or the scenario where the author of the original post is saying things and then deleting or altering their posts to cover their trail. I have seen both happen (the former most common amongst spammers trying to hide links to get by moderators, the latter can be innocent but It is also conducted by malicious posters trying to cause trouble on forums by misrepresenting their actions, or members trying to cover abusive behaviour or other behaviour that is against the rules). For malicious posters it tends to be one of several tell-tale behaviours. Luckily staff have a variety of options to deal with these scenarios when such posters are active on their boards. It is always helpful if members report suspected malicious activity.
  15. I am still looking at exactly how it will work. As a mentor you would have to indicate what you are a mentor for. That information I am looking at displaying centrally in an index of mentors. You might also display it on your profile. Other members and you might also indicate their interests. I set your badge as a test. I will remove it until we have all gone through the possibilities and decided the best set up.
  16. Hey Alo It probably comes as no surprise, the secret is... practice. Ok, you also need to now what to practice! I could advise, but you would be better getting advice from @Mahesh. He works professionally as both a singing teacher and as a singer. Nice to hear you singing... though for assessment and training purposes it is much better if your voice was heard raw... no effects at all. I understand that for someone starting their singing journey that can be a nerve wracking thing. Just remember, we all started there. Most people still get nervous no matter their experience level. They have just learned to funnel it in a constructive way (generally). So, suck it up, record something in YouTube as unlisted and share it accordingly, or maybe get a Skype assessment? Either way, people who help you need to hear your voice "as is" to really stand a chance of helping you. Nerves are a killer. They change how your voice behaves. Your range, your tone. So, I sing everywhere I go. At first people think, "who is tis whackadoodle" but very soon they just get used to it and you become part of the scenery. Instead of being Alo you become Alo, the singing guy" big deal. That aside, when you sing all quiet and apologetic like, it changes your range, tone, sustain etc. Make your mistakes loud and proud. That way the cringe helps you fuel your motivation to exercise and your determination not to make that sort of mistake again! Either way, have fun bud. Singing is awesome and you might just surprise yourself. Cheers John
  17. and I only mean that in terms of my original intended topic. Mentoring and moderating can and should still be debated, though I would prefer within their own dedicated topics. Likewise the noob debate Patchez, though again I would like to talk it through thoroughly in it's own topic. It makes it much easier to come back and find stuff later. To have or not have rank/skill icons is a good question. It certainly isn't set in stone. There are potential downsides, if members do think of them as being us and them or don't like labels of any kind. From another perspective they are very helpful especially for new members on getting a handle on who is who and what they are interested in, or their involvement with the community. They can also be used for attainment levels All that aside, I would also love to know what you guys think of the badges themselves. Do you like or dislike any of them? Are there missing badges? Redundant badges?
  18. I will be brief. You intone conspiracy where there is none. I posted to get feedback on the badges I had created. I mentioned mentoring as part of my motivation (as you can see in my OP). About 30% of your now deleted first reply is quoted. You raised moderation. I replied. Was i wrong to do so? Sides? Really? Curious. Is this how you use the like system? I wouldn't have thought so. Everything in life is not a conspiracy. As you say, back to the music.
  19. Hey Gang What audio interface do you use on your computer? I use a MOTU 828ES: https://motu.com/products/proaudio/828es It has to be said it is an awesome interface. Previously I had an 828 Mk3 Firewire which I raded in to get more than half it's value in trade which was pretty good after 10 years! https://motu.com/products/motuaudio/828x
  20. Hey Gang I am trying to build a picture of member's understanding of the music industry and their use of Music Industry Functions. Please answer! Cheers John
  21. Hey Gang I thought a series of simple questions would be better than abig all encompassing survey... please answer Cheers John
  22. To stop that happening, just drag one our notification messages into your Primary folder and it will stop spam filtering our messages. Some goes for if it is any other folder than primary (such as promotion etc), just drag to primary and done!
  23. Hey Shaza Honestly it is hard to tell based on this alone. Perhaps it is nerves, perhaps location or even time you recorded this... but you seem to be holding back. You are not fully projecting at any point and it shows in your higher notes. They sound a little weak. Don't get me wrong. You are generally on pitch, and your relaxed tone is pretty nice. Your breath seems to be a problem. If you are singing quietly (as it seems restrained) perhaps you are breathing too shallowly? I will move this post to our performance board, but perhaps you should join our vocal club and get some help from @Mahesh? He's a great singing teacher and bound to have some good advice for you. We all start off as raw talent. Many musicians get or have had lessons. Most do learn exercises to develop their skills. It isn't just natural. Have you had singing lessons? Cheers John PS don't be disheartened. Getting good takes serious work. We are used to dissecting songs and performances here to work out what is needed to make them better.
