I think that the indie subgenre will become the new rock. Slowly slightly weirder and less Katy Perry like bands are getting exposure, like fun., Gotye, and Foster The People in the past year have been the buzz bands, as well as more talented mainstream pop singers like Adele. Bands on the rise like grouplove mix dance rock and folk and maintain a steadily increasing following, while The Black Keys and the Foo Fighters are known as the last big rock bands (that are also critically acclaimed and valued among true rock fans, unlike Nickelback and Daughtry). Then there are bands like Mastodon, metal on the verge of rock, and Cage the Elephant, Wavves, and Yuck. Rock is harder to find, but indie rock and pop have a growing following, so I'm starting to feel optimistic. Eventually, I'm hopeful that the early 90s will happen again, a time where rock bands that are both critically acclaimed and popular could exist, at least for a while. Dance music is a sign of the times, and times will change.

Really it all depends on what you're trying to do. Do you have a soundcloud with some of your recordings on it?

Hmmm... I'm less experienced with piano (I'm pretty new at this myself), but would invest in a midi keyboard. That will usually be compatible with the virtual instruments or come with them, which makes them infinitely versatile. If you want to record vocals as well, I would look toward a good condenser mic. I can use mine with any instrument and it works great. Also, what kind of software do you use?

I'm still working on it too! I also seem to screw up the mixing process too often. I think I'm steadily getting the hang of it. It all takes practice!

Name's anonymous. I write songs for a high school alternative punk band that's currently nameless, but I call it Buff Babies. What I would like from this group is feedback - that's all really. I'm also curious to see what everyone else cooks up. My biggest fear is getting too cliche both with lyrics and with the music, and I want to make sure I stay away from yarling or playing hunger dunger dang (google either of these terms and you should know what I mean). I've written around 30 compositions, some of which are passable, some are awful, and some are god-awful. I don't really want to take lyrics too seriously, which I think is a problem with modern alternative rock. My favorite band is Nirvana, which kick-started the whole radio - alternative thing, but Nevermind, their masterpiece album, is so much fun to listen to because of it's wild energy. It was angsty in a pumped up way, not a "I'm going to sit here and pout for a while" or "I'm so pissed off that I'm going to just yell about how much I hate stuff". On the flip side, I also don't want to reduce my music to pop - radio - friendly party music. I'm sick of partying. Whats wrong with screwing around playing video games? As you can tell, I am passionate about music. Sometimes I don't always accomplish my songwriting objectives and write depressing teen angst hunger dunger dang, or sometimes its just downright cheesy.
