Specifically, the baritone. My son decided he wanted to be in band at school and tonight we went and put the money down for one. I promised him I'd post here to see if anyone has suggestions or tips on playing, practicing or instrument care. Anyone?

presumably he's going to be getting lessons?

if thats the case then the teacher should explain all the maintenance/practice stuff.

but as a trombone player, i can advise you not to leave the instrument lying around for too long without makin sure the poor guys ok, they seem to decay pretty fast.

and buy lots of TCP, because you have to bathe them in it.

Or thats what i was taught anyway, maybe i was being tricked, who knows?

:D

Thanks for the response (and welcome, BTW)! He's in band for the first time as it's not offered here until 5th grade so it's a class full of musical noobs. He's a bit more musically advanced than some of the kids; he has some knowledge of music theory because he's been in city chorus and he has such a musical mom :D

He did find that one of his friends has been playing euphonium for a few years so he's getting a few pointers there. I'll see how he's coming along when he comes back to my house on Friday (split custody).
