What Should Be Done Before Sending Songs To Studios Or Lables

It`s a real question for me. I`ve stuck ... As I live in Russia it might be different... but here there s no law about keeping author rights. I`ve created several albums and I`d like to send them to some labels or simply place on some music sites where I`m already a memeber. But... copyright question is an important one. I was advised by some musicians to place on my videos Creative Commons License, if it`s enough? What about audio?

Svetlana:

Creative Commons has nothing to do with copyrights.  It assumes you have copyrights and allows you to license your recordings for others to use for free.  Russia is a signatory country to The Berne Convention - an international copyright treaty.  So, as a Russian author, you can scan also register your claims with the U.S. Copyright Office if you want to.  To educate yourself about all that, start here. http://copyright.gov

Thank you for the answer!

Yes, I know that any peice of art doesn`t have to be authorized (in Russia) but it doesn`t give any

guarantee as well :). Especially if Im going to send my songs abroad)).
Any way, thank you again!

Hate to be this blunt, but I'm afraid that nothing in life has any guarantees Svetlana!

Not in your country, nor anywhere else. Many times the best you can do is......research the generally recommended practices, access those practices for yourself, make a decision on how to proceed and cross your fingers.

If you're looking for some absolutely foolproof way to insure that your work is never stolen or used without your permission, it simply doesn't exist!

My advice is to take the tradionally recommended steps.....

  • file your works with the Library of Congress
  • and maintain good, orderly personal records of all of your works

Beyond that....don't worry about it because there's no point. Why worry about circumstances you simply can't control?

Hope this helps.

Tom

And....his advice was FREE.

Hello, Tom,

thank you for the answer!

I absolutely agree that there`s no 100% guarantee... and I never expect it. Thank you for the advice!

best
