Hello Songwriters Of The World! :)

Hi, another new member here. I'm a musician based in the UK. I'm here to exercise my writing and collaboration skills because I have decided the time has come to start writing rather than playing other people's songs! :D I've been writing on and off for years, but have decided to now "go for it", and so I've joined this forum to see if it gives me opportunities to expand what I do. I am a piano/keyboard player with a nice little home studio capable of chucking out some decent (professional grade) tracks. I did an MA a few years ago specialising in film music, which was fun, but I hanker after writing a pop song or two :)

I'd really like to work with a lyricist or two, and can offer quite a bit in return - piano tracks no problem and also fuller production stuff if needed. It all takes time though, and my time is split between several musical projects I have on the go, so perhaps the first thing I'd like to do is stick with some nice lyrics and come up with piano backings. Though, given the right material, I'm happy to work on more complex stuff. I work to the rule of thumb of one hour per minute of material for the final song, though the preparation time can be a few days.

I am collaborating with a good friend of mine who has good connections, so I am currently writing material for him. I just want to do more to keep my brain flexible! :)

I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of this forum :)

he he, looks like I'm spoilt for choice with collabs! :D

Ok, serious question - as far as the ago-old problems of copyright infringement goes (sorry to bring it up!) but how many people on here are wanting to do professional songwriting? I am working with a good friend in commercial stuff, and that is utterly separate from my life on this forum, for obvious legal reasons. I would NEVER steal lyrics, nor tweak them into something else elsewhere. That would be utterly dumb of me, and ruin my reputation.

So, if I do collab with people here, it's for fun. But, if we choose to try and use it commercially, are people savvy enough to understand the need for legal contracts for songwriting at that commercial level? I'm a member of the Musicians Union(UK) and have a music lawyer (London, and very expensive!) so I don't mess about(!)

The last thing I'd want to do is collab with someone and find out they wrote the lyrics with someone else who isn't on the contract and therefore is able to sue at a future date!!

(it's this issue which has stopped me jumping straight in and writing with people on the forum. I can't wait to work with people and start writing songs!)

That's something you have to deal with, with whoever you chose to begin working with.

You have a real range of folks here on the Am -> Pro scale.

I think that there's a different interpretation of your 'fun', whereby those you may think are only here for fun, if it's game time will suit up. But many may be put off with legalities upfront, when they themselves want to know who you are first, if there's a 'click' between you, if it's going to be a good working relationship.

To that end, perhaps it's best to 'have some fun first', kick a few ideas around, see if you're compatible. Afterall, this isn't an arranged marriage

That makes a lot of sense :) Guess we are all in similar boats. I will just take it easy and take my time getting to know people etc. I've seen a few more people freshly joined up with "all guns blazing" so time to take a back seat :D
