Hello there!

Reasonably seasoned guitarist/multi-instrumentalist here. I took piano lessons from 1988 to 1990 then switched to guitar. I blame the <never once tuned> piano in our semi finished, dank basement. I've been around the world musically in that I've tried a little of everything. I've been in dozens of bands but few that did not implode/explode because of, you know, musicians' personalities/fate/outside circumstances, before we could record anything on note. I've accumulated some select reliable pieces of recordi gear and recording know how over the years to boot.

I've written a couple hundred tracks, a very few of which I have put up on band camp. But this brings us to what brings me here. I have analysis paralysis when it comes to lyrics, maybe it's because I'm so picky about lyrics as a listener. But I am always mortified at some point after I share something, then I try and pretend it didn't happen lol. I feel like my writing is underdeveloped and I don't even know what I would want to write about. A lot of people say stuff like, "hey write about what you know" well, that doesn't work because, you know, I am a super boring creature. Mostly conflict free life, most of the people I know anumore are pretty nice. I got two little kids and a wife a little house and I'm working as a machinist. So what the hell. I need to break out and find my voice as a writer, just like I did with my voice teacher when I was 25. You know, nice and easy. I'm thrilled to have the chance to open up more philosophical discussions on lyric writing, motivations, community norms, analysis of favorite songs.

This is why I love love love love playing covers. I mean, google The Who playing "heat wave"

Playing covers is to me like playing dress up, I can use my skills without fear of rejection... lol help....

Speaking of heat wave, were currently hosting heat wave of our own here in Chicago Illinois, USA.

Have a great day!

Welcome to the forum; I'm very new myself. I can't tell yet how active these boards are, but I am hopeful.

You sound like a more interesting than average songwriter; I'm bored with the "I love you so much, please come back" themes and prefer ideas that are more creative. If I'm going to get in a rut, I would prefer it be one of "peace and harmony around the world".

I will expect to see you around the forum.

Hi @Panama Bacchanal!!

Welcome to Songstuff! I think you are in a great place to develop your confidence as a lyricist! Have a look to other people's works in the Lyrics Critique board (and normally also kn the other critique boards lyrics are posted). Just by reading the lyrics themselves and the critique/feedback other people give to them, you can already help a lot. With your experience and your "pickyness" I am also sure you can provide very insightful feedback to other people in the forum. And whenever you feel ready to post your own stuff, you will be able to get help from others.

If you like discussions about songwriting and that kind of topics, you are also very welcome to start discussion threads in Musicians Lounge or in Songwriting board! It'll be so nice to get to know you and others a little bit further through that!

It's great to have you around! See you on the boards!
