music and legal worries

I'm new to spotify in that I've never uploaded before. I've written/recorded a song I'd like to upload but I understand I have to do it through a distributor.

if I use a distributor does that give them legal rights to my material?

ps: I've tried reaching out to the spotify community about this but didn't get any real help.

It gives them certain limited rights to act on your behalf.

 

They have to have some rights in order to do anything with your music. In this case, upload your music to Spotify. Not only that but they have to be able to grant Spotify certain rights and privileges including further distributing your music (to end users and to other sites through their player), and selling your music.

 

It does not transfer any ownership of your song (at least I am not aware of a distributor with that clause).
