  1. I have been trying to think of a simple reply to this but am struggling because it is such a broad question!

One thing that usually annoys me is when there's a few.. say 3 or 4 tracks in a row in the same key.

Album length I suppose for me is not a major issue, if the songs were all very similar I wouldn't be able to sit through a long album, but if they were good solid contrasting songs AND arrangements (as well as of course, in a style I liked) I could listen to it for a long time. I think anything from 8-12 tracks works well if they are on average your standard 3-4 minute songs.

One of my favourite albums is Patrick Watson's  'Adventures in your own backyard'. I think Patrick Watson (the band and the guy) are fantastic and they use lot's of different sounds. Also, the songs aren't overly similar to each other, though all well written/produced. it has 12 tracks. I don't get bored in the slightest listening to it the whole way through.

I have many favourite albums which are not similar at all, though. I like to sit down and listen to a full album when I can find the time.

This is a tough one. I don't know if my answer is even an answer, but it's my thoughts!

  2. First of all there is 1 or 2 I know that I am certain to be decent.

BUT I am curious as to weather this is something lots of you have come across. So far, (baring in mind I have only been gigging for a year), the majority of "promoters" I have met do nothing in the way of "promoting" but are only interested in filling a slot that they have to fill and I am left to fill the seats myself, even if it is a place that I know nobody; which is not what I signed up for.

Another thing I have come across is lots of offers such as "Oh yes we will get you playing at this festival... this gig" or just promising something that it seems they make no effort to actually make happen.

Wondered what your similar experiences were?

Also if there was any tips on how to know if a promoter is genuine or not? Questions to ask them?

I don't want to have to say no to everything just in case!

  3. If you're struggling, learn the harmony and the melody as two separate things. Practice them both and then record yourself singing the melody in your own time and practice the harmony on top of your own recording to get ready to fit in with other people.

  4. Hey Josie...

Here's the simple: Each new post has to RELATE to the last post in some more or less direct fashion. For example:

Mahesh posted... Dare You To Move - Switch Foot

I followed next with... I Wanna Hold Your Hand - The Beatles...  Hand relates to Foot - both are body parts.

I might also have posted a song which referred to a form of movement, such as Let's Dance by David Bowie... and make the connection to the word "Move" in Mahesh's post.

If someone "calls" you on your most recent post, your next response needs to explain the connection between your post and the last post before yours. If you can't explain your post or make a connection, due to a brain fart perhaps, Songstuff sends a pack of tone deaf gremlins to your house where they break in and beat you mercilessly with wet noodles.

    Hope this helps.

Hiya! I do understand the game! My reply just seemed very random because I was on a different page and thought that the comment at the bottom of THAT page was the latest comment, without realizing there was 246 pages of the game. I don't know what page I was on. Sorry again. Please just continue ignoring it!

  5. That's mental. When I play a gig, I get paid and that's it. I suppose this is because I am not well known and so things are much simpler.

I wonder how much truth is in this and where writers would come into the equation, I guess I really have very little knowledge on how record labels work! I'd like to have more of an understanding. So many people needing to be paid and all under the name of one artist or band! It seems like a different world to me. Maybe I am just silly.

  6. Nice to meet you too! Just to clarify, I don't use a metronome in practice often, not even once a month. I sometimes have used one in instrumental pieces but I don't remember using one for singing. I'm sure I have at some point. (I really should have said tune rather than song!) When I'm teaching I sometimes use one.
