  1. A long time buddy of mine and bandleader had this 70's strat that was nothing like mine. The neck was fatter and wider. He had smaller hands then mine but they were meaty. He had no problem getting around on his neck and I couldn't believe how much of a stretch it was for me.

Sometimes I think a lot of it boils down to what we start off with when we are starting off. My 335 had a slim D 60's profile neck same with my LP Custom. Those were my go-to guitars before the stratocaster. Nonetheless my 80' strat's neck profile was nothing like Willie's 70 strat.

I was at Sam Ash today looking at some guitars and I finally realized how different necks of guitars can be.

I kept all this in mind today and I couldn't find an electric I really liked. But I did get to play a $3000+ Gibson just for fun. I liked it cause it had a small neck which fit me well. The crazy thing was it tuned itself which was really weird! And if you ever want to get a guitar that tunes itself, keep in mind it is a pain to bring it to bring to different tuning. Took me a solid 30 minutes with help from a store member to get it to go to drop D. And I was never able to get it back to standard tuning. Oops.

I do have some other guitar stores around me to I can try though.

I did find an acoustic I really liked though. I believe it was a Fender Tim Armstrong Hellcat. It felt really nice to play, better than the acoustic I have now, much different sound though. I'm really thinking of getting that one. The only thing I don't like about it is doesn't have a cutaway.

  2. I completely agree with you, Rob.  But, I must confess that there's a part of me that wants this lucky 17 year old who's only been playing two years to have to go through the right of passage I had to endure of suffering with shit guitars for a longer period of time.  Sorry, Moe!  <heh-heh>   :)

Haha no offense taken. And actually I'll be playing for 3 years soon though!

However, I feel like all the girls my age that play guitar have fancy Taylor and Gibson acoustics that are worth thousands while I'm playing a much cheaper Yamaha. It holds its tune well and I put nice strings on it and I personally think it sounds great.

I can't imagine the struggle you guys had to face suffering playing the guitar when you guys first learned! I thought my Yamaha got bad sometimes. I love that Yamaha, but it chews up my fingers when I play lots of power and bar chords after awhile.

  3. Thanks! Here are a few I found that I liked (Apparently someone threw out the magazine I had so I had to go online) so tell me what you think! I kinda rushed to find them but I found a few I originally had at least... But if you don't mind look at a few and tell me what you think (These links are for my reference too haha).

  4. Thanks guys for the suggestions! I would love not to need a new guitar, but I'm looking for a new guitar because I only have 1 electric guitar and it was my first guitar so it is very basic (And it broke a bit in a place or 2, but none were my fault!). Plus, my little cousin stole it... So right now I have none (Except my acoustic). I'm looking for something I can do more on with more buttons and what not (Like whammy bars). However, I will make sure I don't get too carried away with buying lots of guitars!

I definitely think I should get a new amp too though, thanks for that suggestion! My current one is pretty wimpy haha. That will definitely help!

And I think I should go to a store now just to make sure it feels right. I wanted to buy online because it was cheaper, and all the music stores around me are really expensive!

I went through this music catalog for a store near me and I might ask for some suggestions about some of the guitars I picked out later too.

  5. Hello! So I am looking for a new electric guitar but I have no idea what to get! So I would like to get some advice from some experts before I get one. Right now I have a cheaper Fender that I got for my 15th birthday when I first started playing guitar, so it's not that nice! But now that I know I'm going to keep playing, so I'd like move onto something much nicer so I can do more things. :)

I'm not too incredibly specific, however it needs to sound nice! I'd also prefer it to have a cool design (And be unique) as well. I mainly play rock and metal, so nothing "girly" or for another genre. Also nothing super heavy either (Weight wise) if possible!  :P

So I want a guitar that is nice, but not something that is thousands of dollars! As well as paying for it myself, I'm hoping my parent's can combine my Christmas and Birthday present, which probably leaves me a top of $1,200 (Depending how much I want to work...). I am probably going to buy online because it would be cheaper as well. Thank you!

  6. That's good to hear Mike! It was helpful, I'm still referring to it!

Yeah, I need to work on starting out slow, I just like to dive into things, jump right in on the deep end because that's just how my personality is. That is a great wake up call though!

I need to get out and play with other people again. And perform. I've played with 2 other people who played guitar before and it was a huge help and eye opener each time. We taught each other songs and tricks which really have helped me build up to the mediocre guitarist I am today. Too bad I don't know many people that play. Maybe when I get to college next year.

And how can you get Guitar Pro? More importantly what is it?

However, I have been doing something right, I've been recording myself play for a bit for my Youtube channel and for when I recorded a whole bunch of originals just for safekeeping, which I'm actually going to go back and listen to since I haven't listened to them for a long time and compare myself to how I played a year or 2 ago.

  7. That could do double-duty as a very well written blog article Mike...just a thought!

A also agree. I did not expect to get such well thought out and in depth responses, thank you. But that deserves to be more than just a comment on some random page. :)

  8. I've got to hand it to Tom for that article was great.

I was self taught at first.  All my buddies had guitars and encouraged me to pick up guitar but as soon as I did they'd offer me nothing. I'd have to watch them play a song then go home and try to figure out what they were doing.  I'd buy books and try to learn from them.  The thing was.....I got good quick on my own and I could hold my own as a rhythm guitarist but my lead playing sucked.  Even as I got better there were still many things I knew that I didn't know.  I was dissatisfied with my first teacher and found a second one at the same store. Three months with a good teacher taught me more then 3 years on my own with every book I could get my hands on.

That's kind of what I'm thinking, other than, my friends never played guitar. I feel like I can play rhythm, but I've gotten more interested in playing solos and such recently. My AP Stat teacher this year plays guitar (Other than he likes folk and I like harder rock), he has a guitar in his room the one time I went in there. Maybe I can learn a bit from him and see what being taught is at least like. :)

  9. Ive been sitting here for an hour wondering how to answer your question, hopefully doing more good than harm.

This is coming from someone thats been playing for over thirty five years, still learning every day,and still just a mediocre player that LOVES to play.

First off,as Rudi said, maybe theres not a lot of relevance in learning things you dont think apply to what your trying to achieve, but who knows what youll be trying to achieve down the road.If possible Id try to absorb every aspect I could. If I could start from scratch,I would learn every scale in every mode and how they all relate to each other.

Second is practice, practice and more practice, but not to the point where you get burnt out on it.You might get frustrated from time to time when learning new stuff, but thats when you regroup and play some stuff youve allready mastered to make it not seem monotonous.

Next in the learning process I find that just slowing things down to what seems like ridiculous speeds till you get it down ,then slowly build your speed up to the tempo you are trying to achieve.

Next is making sure you are achieving the emotions in your playing. It doesnt matter if you can play 1000 notes a minute if theres no feeling to it.Simpler sounds better when your heart is behind it.

As far as lessons or not I dont know how to answer that as I never had them, but most of the greats have either had them or taught them at some point of time.If you could find a teacher that could keep it interesting and fun ,Im sure that would be awesome.

Im sure you are aware of all the material as far as lessons for songs and technique on youtube.Tons of helpfull info !!!

Also getting together with other players can give tons of insight.

Another piece of advice Id offer is when you come up with an idea, find a way to make sure youll remember it,be it a scratch track recording or simply writing your progression down.Thats coming from a person that cant remember what he played ten minutes ago.

I could go on forever but the cut and dry:

Play from your heart;Play to enjoy;Maintain your focus on what YOU are trying to achieve;Stay in the groove, and dont be afraid to go outside the box. Some of my best stuff has come from just an experiment or even a mistake that turned out sounding good.

Best of luck and keep on jammin.

    David

This is perfect, describes a lot of me perfectly, thanks!

  10. So, I've been wondering about this for a bit... What do you think is the best way to learn guitar? I know many people who have had guitar lessons and have done alright, most of them around my age, but most people I've met just play in their free time by looking up songs to play or learning by ear.

And I'm wondering, which way do you think is better? Lessons, playing in free time, etc.

I've been playing guitar for about 2 1/2 years, but I've only really started playing seriously to get better since the beginning of this year and I've accomplished more in 7 months than I did in 2 years just by changing my mentality. I don't know any technicalities, other than some basic chords. I'm wondering if I would benefit from actually learning guitar when I take music classes in college, or if it would confuse me and mess me up, or if it would make it easier to play and make me better. I really want to get good at playing the guitar someday, and I'm not sure how far just playing songs by ear in my free time will take me... Any advice or anything helps! Thanks!

  11. I hate when that happens! I know it's hard to record sometimes, but try to keep the melody in your head till you can get somewhere you can record it. Might have to sacrifice some conversations, but if you struck gold you gotta keep it! Just go to the bathroom or something, no one will question.

One problem I think is you think of the melody, then listen to other music, which causes you to forget if. That is a no no that messes me up a ton, so try not to do that.

One thing I tried, I don't know how it worked though, is I wrote the melody on paper, but not actual notes though. I just wrote out the melody with lines, up meant higher pitch and vice versa. Plus, the longer the notes the longer the lines. That's just if I'm desperate though. Might be worth a try though.

  12. I own 3 right now. An acoustic Yamaha that is alright and 2 electric ibanez beginner guitars. One was for my 17th birthday when I began playing and the other I got at a yard sale adn the acosutic I got on sale. However I did perform with this guy's Taylor guitar before and it sounded really nice! I've been playing guitar for about 2 and a half years, but only really took it seriosuly to get better since the last 6 months. I'm hoping to get a spalted maple guitar sometimes they are so cool looking! :)

    Oops I meant 15th birthday!

  13. I don't try to sound like others, cause I've tried and I can't. However, I've only been really singing for 2 years, so I don't even consider myself one. My voice is too dry sounding to sound like most singers making records these days. People have told me it's unique, but I kind of hate it. However, if I find something that I like in singers vocals I'll try it, for example I love how badass Joan Jett sounds, I like how rough Taylor Momsen's voice is so rough and raspy, and how Jess Greenberg "growls" in edgier rock songs. I've tried to mimic it a bit.

  14. The best way to build confidence is to sing in front of a group of 5-6 people. Select the 5-6 people to be friends or family who like your songs. Ask one of them to record your practices and then watch them later. You will be able to find your own glitches there. Work on them! Try increasing the number of audiences and gradually you will get better! I have done this.

In the process of getting those songs recorded I figured out some of them that were really good. We uploaded some videos to youtube and we could also send entries one of the online music portals. You could try doing it too. You might just get some gigs to perform!

I haven't really performed too much, but performing in front of over 30 people is easier than 4 for me because it's less intimate and because more people have other distractions like each other. I'm awkward though (probably because I was shy as a child but now I'm a social butterfly a lot of the time) and not in a cute way, more like what the hell is wrong with you way! So it could be different for me. You can also start out with videos on youtube and such to get people's opinion (and maybe others advice) before you perform.

Also, just not caring about what others think and concentrate on yourself works very well in all kinds of situations, at least for me, if you can do it. Just wait till you get senioritis and it will be much easier after that!
