Working For The Weekend --- Loverboy
-
You got it, Wolfman.

Thus far I've only written sacred choral music. In a way I have it easy in that the subject and sometimes text are somewhat defined for me. I see what we need and I fill it. The creative part is finding the right feel for the event. For example, I wrote a Magnificat a couple of years ago and because Mary was Jewish I wanted to give the song a Jewish feel. It came off sounding vaguely like a hora which added to the enjoyment of singing it. And last year for Christmas Eve I wrote a piece that essentially was a lullaby so the music fit that style.

Anyone who has been here for any length of time knows I'm an odd duck. All I really need is notation software and the best for the money I could find to meet my needs was Noteworthy. Now that I know the keyboard shortcuts it's become even easier for me.
Occasionally I find that a music editor is a good thing to have so I got Audacity. I don't use it often though and so I'm not familiar with a lot of the intricacies of using it.

Aw, cmon... I'm not the biggest fan of country music either but sure there are happy/upbeat songs. From the old (Hank Williams' "Hey Good Lookin') to the new (Toby Keith's "I Ain't As Good As I Once Was") and in between (lots of stuff by Johnny Cash).

Glad this game is still going strong! And I just noticed this is my 500th post!

The perfect marriage of music and hell. Buy your copy today! Operators are standing by!

I like your attitude.
Creative Commons obviously has made its ideologically-driven place in the contemporary media-universe.
But - like Steve - it ain't for me.
No way.
Nope.
Agreed. I think there's too much dilution (translation: ripping off) of creativity now as it is. The e-mail may be above-board but I'm wondering what Herr Henkel's stake in this is. Maybe I missed something.

Oooooo, Steve works in the red light district!
I'm also often a midnight oil-burner. My best work seems to be done right in my bedroom when it's fairly quiet, but now that I think about it, the song I've written that I've been proudest of so far was written on my old laptop during lulls at work. Maybe I should rethink my strategy. Oh, and I also seem to work well when I have a deadline, whether self-imposed or because I've been commissioned to write for a specific event.

Disclaimer: I haven't clicked the link and I may have more input once I do. I have merely gotten the gist from the posts in this thread so far.
As Tom said, there is a great demand for instant gratification today. In a sense we're all guilty, or the internet wouldn't have nearly the draw that it does. On the other hand, quality is still valued as well (to a point; there are many examples on the airwaves of trash being king, but nonetheless people still vote with their dollars and attention). I doubt that we will see "All computer-generated music, all the time" as a radio format unless the world becomes much more Orwellian than it is now.
One additional thought: This type of thing is one reason I have shied away from using Band In A Box or similar programs. I know that particular program has many fans here and I don't discount its value, but it still has a certain creepiness factor for me.

Ride My See-Saw --- The Moody Blues

Thanks John

Gentlemen... Gentlemen...
Today I heard a song on the radio that I hadn't heard in years and thought was perfect for this thread. It was Neil Young's After The Gold Rush as performed by a group called Prelude. Gorgeous, closely woven harmonies and not an instrument around. Any other examples come to mind?

Vehicle --- Ides of March

I'm not necessarily talking about classical or doo-wop here, although I love those too. A cappella sections can add a lot to a piece's enjoyment. I'm thinking along the lines of the lead-in for Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.
Do you enjoy listening to that sort of thing? Ever do it? Afraid to try it? Let me know your thoughts.
