Years ago I started with Cool Edit Pro 2.0, the predecessor to Adobe Audition. (Adobe bought the parent company Syntrillium that put out CEP)

Now I use Cubase 7LE....and the learning curve was huge but it was worth it.  Even just using the LE version it way better hands down to anything else I've used...and IT'S STABLE! No goofy glitches, lockups, or losses.

I remember Cool Edit Pro! Used it a loooong time ago. It was pretty good at the time.

  2. I started out originally with Acoustica which was a precursor to Mixcraft Pro Studio which I use now. I tried Ableton Live Lite but found it to be too cumbersome for my uses. I find Mixcraft to be a very powerful and inexpensive tool for simple recording musicians. What sold me on purchasing it was the amount of plugins and virtual instruments that came with it for under $200. I've also tried Pro Tools First but it's too limited and I can do as much or more with Mixcraft. If someone's looking for a great value to get your feet wet with, I recommend Mixcraft Pro Studio.

Since this is the "lounge" I guess any topic within reason is ok as long as you don't mind it changing directions.

Latency is mainly due to the quality of the drivers and the internal buffer inside of the audio interface. My one way latency is around 10ms. My round trip latency is twice that amount. Some interfaces now are getting 6ms round trip latency. RME, Steinberg and Motu have some great drivers that keep latency lower because of a better design.

Having said that , you can adjust the computer recording buffers lower. If you have your buffer set at 512 , you could try half that amount at 256. If your setup can handle that amount you will trim a few ms off the latency. If it can't you'll get crackling noises. The buffers can either be accessed through your recording software or the software that came with your interface or sound card.

You may also be having an issue with win10 changing settings. I had that problem. Good luck with it.

As a workaround I have been recording electric guitar parts dry and then adding the FX later on. For synths I'll record a midi file while listening to audio from the same keyboard, so I have both a midi track and an audio track recorded at the same time. I can then take that midi track and insert it into a software synthesizer. I just haven't had the time to look into a new interface yet, but I plan to. The Motu ultralight is a strong contender. I like what I have for sound quality, just has bad latency numbers.

I have a Focusrite 2i2 that has about 10ms latency at my present settings. They just came out with a smaller Clarett version that brings the latency to almost nil. Not bad price either (depending on your budget) about $460.

  4. Ok, first draft for the challenge....I know a couple of lines may not be true to the challeng (like in the bridge) but...

KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF MY STUFF

    VERSE 1:

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING?

ARE YOU CRAZY? HAVE YOU GONE INSANE?

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU’RE FOOLING?

YOU BE READY FOR A WORLD OF PAIN

WHEN YOU PLAY WITH FIRE, GONNA GET YOURSELF BURNED

YOU’RE SUCH A LIAR, AREN’T YOU EVER GONNA LEARN

YOU FILTHY, SNEAKY, DIRTY ROTTEN SWINE

    THAT LAST DONUT WAS MINE!

    CHORUS:

KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF OF ALL OF MY STUFF

I’VE BEEN PATIENT BUT I’VE HAD ENOUGH

BETTER STOP BEFORE I FINALLY GET ROUGH

KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF MY STUFF

    VERSE 2:

    MAYBE YOU THINK IT’S FUNNY

GET A LIFE, MAYBE GROW A BRAIN

I SURE AIN’T MADE OF MONEY

SEEMS IT’S ALWAYS GOING UP IN FLAMES

YOU GOT ME STRESSING, GOT MY HEAD IN MY HANDS

I JUST DON’T GET IT, WON’T YOU TRY TO UNDERSTAND

THIS SITUATION IS ALL KIND OF WRONG

    THE TOILET PAPER’S ALL GONE

    CHORUS

    BRIDGE:

YOU’VE BEEN USING MY THINGS, BUT YOU DON’T PAY NO RENT

IT’S COSTING ME DOLLARS, BUT IT MAKES NO SENSE

I’M NOT YOUR MOMMA,  I’M NOT TELLING YOU AGAIN….

    CHORUS

  5. My main reason for choosing Mixcraft was a balance of a couple of things. First, my nephew who now works in a sound studio told me that Pro Tools was the only thing to get but I am very new at recording/mixing music and with 7 kids couldn't justify the cost to the wife (the REAL reason...haha). I had a lite version of Ableton Live Lite that came with my Focusrite interface but found that I spent more time trying to figure out the complexity (like I said, I'm new) of the program then recording and mixing.  Got frustrated and took the fun out of it. I agree that if you are very serious about doing this for a living you should invest and get the best you can afford. However, I can dream about doing this for a living but am honest enough to realize that ain't going to happen anytime soon.  As I have been able to spend more time recording and learning mixing by actually doing it verses getting frustrated at the complexity of the DAW I am learning much more faster! I can see in the future that as I grow in music so will the need for better and more powerful tools.

    Just a rookie's perspective.
