  1. I think 'sound' and 'style' is an accumulation over time of the things that 'worked' for that band. That could well be less than 20% of all the things that they tried, and got booed either by the other band members, or the fans - and died a quick, silent death, never to be mentioned again.

This of course covers only things that *can* be replaced/altered. Other things are just 'them', which is why you can pick out David Bowie's voice in 2 seconds flat, when he does guest appearances. Even in a Queen song... :)

  2. I don't think this is being done to protect artists.

Nope, it isn't - it's mainly to protect the record companies, and 'estates'.. The Stones and Beatles album were running out of 'protection'.

From what I've read, 15 years would be more appropriate, since most artists have made good on their investment by then.

Don't forget this also means *recordings* of classical music cannot be republished if the holder of the copyright refuses to cooperate.

  3. when the Beatles landed in NYC in 1964 for

their first U.S. appearance, they had already been together since

1957 and had clocked an estimated 1,200 gigs, many

consisting of eight hour sets at Hamburg and Liverpool clubs

Well they say you have to spend about 10,000 hours of hard work to become proficient/expert at anything. Even though that's probably no guarantee of success, at least you can rest assured you are miles above the rest of the pack, whatever you do ... :)

  4. My theory is that if you cannot easily identify it as music, it's probably some new genre.. :P

Seriously tho - it's an interesting question, but with fairly changeable results/answers over longer periods of time.

Stuff gets reclassified, too. Rock becomes 'classic/early rock' etc or simply nailed to a decade - a 'very distinct sixties sound' (without further explanation).

I think as some have tried to point out earlier, people trying to write strictly with a distinct style in mind, want to play it safe/have commercial interests in mind above musical ones.

  5. Not the NRA or any of those people. It must be Marilyn Manson sending out subliminal messages.

It's absurd. In my opinion, it's about time that we all said enough is enough and just refuse to pander to the mainstream inudstry and buy any of their products.

You forgot drugs and games. Those are the perceived culprits in this day and age, subliminal messages are so last week.

In a sense it's the new capitalism. What used to be simply consumer goods are now consumer-owned capital goods to produce things that can be 'shared' on the interwebz and picked up (stolen) for nothing, and no fear of legal retribution because they have more lawyers.

It's the same thing with photographs, music, and kewl ideas (facebook, anyone?)

Hence my idea to start with legal. IMHO it's the only way to beat them at their own game - have better lawyers, and if need be, offer higher bribes to the judges. (cynical, moi? :tongue_smilie: )
