  1. Right, hmm, okay.

This is my first electric: Chinese Strat knock-off, got it about ten years ago. Horrible, horrible thing, been gathering dust for nine years now.

A week ago I got new pickups for my other guitar, so to practice soldering (which I had never attempted before), I stuffed one of its old pickups into the thing (which, surprisingly was already pre-routed for humbuckers at the neck and bridge).

Took some... improvisation (did you know for example, that pickups are actually held by the pickguard? I clearly didn't! and since as it turned out, I am not very good at soldering (holding the soldering iron up to the metal thingie at the end of a mostly plastic switch long enough will make the thingie melt through. It all seems so clear in hindsight), the tone and volume knobs don't actually do anything. But everything else works! thumb23.gif

Oh, and it's tuned to drop d nasvhille and it looks like this:

  2. Hi Bill,

I use Noteworthy Composer. It's pretty basic, but the GUI is standard notation, it has full MIDI input/output functionality (though importing *.mid files is a bit troublesome) and you can sequence stuff using just the (computer) keyboard which I personally find very comfortable. Plus it's cheap ($50).

Throw in another $10 and you can get Guitar Pro, which does all of the above and a bunch more (it's a big ugly mess of buttons though). If all you're looking for is a simple sequencer then ProTools would be a definite overkill.

NWC is PC-only as far as I know. GP is cross-platform (I think there's even an iPad version).

  3. Ideally, your arm should be parallel to the floor. Hold your thumb at the center of the neck, sliding along as you move your hand. If what I just typed out made sense enough for you to duplicate, then you'll see that your fingers are...erm, "circling backwards" onto the strings, so that only the tips of the fingers touch the strings themselves, and that your palm is parallel to the neck with the fingers going straight up instead of at an angle.

Make sure that you're fingering with the bottom of the fingertip, your nails should not be touching or even close to the strings. Once you've accomplished that: try this little bitty:

    E(1st)|---3---4---1---2-

    B(2nd)|-1---2---3---4---

    and this one:

    E|-1h2-1h3-1h4-2h3-2h4-3h4

Keep your first finger on the first fret, second finger on the second and so on.

The position should show you what you're doing wrong and help you fix it (unless you're all set on becoming the next Segovia, I doubt that you would choose to play like that, I know I didn't), the exercises will give you some finger positioning flexibility and strengthen your fingers. Also they will force you to use your pinky finger which will help you endlessly with chords.

    Good luck!
