I've heard the Rode NT1-A is a favourite for many on the budget mic level. Supposed to be great for vocals and guitars especially in a soundproofed and controlled environment. I don't have one myself but it does sound great from what i've heard.

For me it would definitely have to be my singing - The notes I pick and how to get better melodies

I put down "Mailing List" mainly from all the reading i've been doing. Surprised to see what the majority think!
When do we find out the answer John?

I never warm up - but I have to start because I find my voice fatigues in a matter of minutes if i'm singing a complex vocal song. I haven't actually tried a 15 - 20 min vocal exercise before I sing...I think that would do wonders for me.
Maybe I should do that from now on?

I currently use Cubase 5 for my recordings and will be starting my EP recording process soon. In saying that i've recorded a song with it from start to end and find the most vital tool is multiband compression and like hariossa said Izotope Ozone (now v3 is out) which is an outstanding mastering vst plugin for your final mix. Definitely take a look at those.
