Any replacement for Gibson medium strings?

Didier

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've been using Gibson medium (10, 13, 17, 26, 36, 46) strings since more years than I care to remember.

Now, because of dubious commercial politics, they are not available anymore in France.

So, any suggestions for a replacement? Mind you, I don't want brighter, softer, whatever strings.

As I know Gibson don't make them themselves, I thought perhaps someone would know what brand produces the same strings.

I see NO point in using such a POOR set of strings, anyway???

People concentrated on making guitars are usually NOT the best people to manufacture STRINGS or have them manufactured elsewhere.... see "Fender" for a poor example....

Why not try D'Addario strings for a change???

I have used D'Addario 0.10 and 0.12 sets in my electric and acoustic guitars and been VERY happy with their good, even quality, and particularly their long life.

Worth a try?

Hi KillerJoe,

I did try D'Addario strings, and I wasn't impressed.

<<I see NO point in using such a POOR set of strings, anyway>>

Well, that's what works for me :)

Happily, I just come back from a trip to Dublin, when I was able to buy a ten pack, so that should cover my needs for some time.

Anyway, nobody can answer the question: what makes are Gibson strings really?

Well.... ONE thing is certain....

Whoever is makin'  'em, it AIN'T Gibson!

Try something around the regions of.... "Singapore" .... or "Fidzi-Islands" or any of such... little kids sowing guitar strings for a coconut per day....

There ARE better strings than D.... I admit.... but they are hard to find.... and you won't find them in Your friendly neighbourhood Music-Shop.

Well .... through Internet You should be able to find ANYTHING.... and have 'em sent to You by mail.

There are sets designed specifically for acoustic work and sets for electrics as well.... but I went for an easy, accessible, and GOOD solution with those D'Addarios..... Over HERE You can get them allmost in any music-shop, in any City.... and THAT was one of the reasons for picking them...

I'm sorry You didn't like  'em, they're really not at all bad, actually they're OK. YOU are just being picky!

Bye!

H.H.  ;)

Didier, KillerJoe,

I stayed out of this as I have NO idea who makes Gibson Strings, nor do I use them. I have custom sets made up from Ernie Ball stock packs & occasionally a Rotosound top E to complete it.

Didier, what are Gibson strings like? Are they flatwound? special alloy? There must be something about them that gives a clue.

Thanks god not! That would make me a jazz guitarist, wouldn't it? :)

special alloy?

They quote Nickel plated Steel.

Perhaps, I'm no specialist. When I asked the question initially, I thought it was something well known, it seems not.

What I know is that "Brite wires" strings are a perfect match for a guitar which tends to lack brightness (e.g., my ES-330 with a single P90 in middle position).

Well, I asked around and came up with nothing. I am MOST surprised!

:-[

I did investigate before posting here :)

So, as everyone seemed so sure Gibson didn't made them themselves, I thought it was common knowledge.

Obviously not.

According to Gibson, they are really making their stings themselves (in Illinois, isn't it?).
