POEM: The End

© 1984, 2012 by JLM

I wrote this when I was 14. Reagan was in office and at the time we were scared of the Russians. My father was in the service and we were trained and prepared as a family for the "Cold War". Luckily that never happened, but that doesn't mean there haven't been other fearful situations since then...We lived in NYC during 9/11. My daughters were younger and understood less, but they knew it was something "bad". I don't write poetry anymore, but I write lyrics...just thought since I was on the lyric board I might pull this out and post it here.

In the beginning

When the world was new

Everything beautiful

Just grew and grew.

The sky was blue

And the grass was green.

Everything was peaceful

I believe.

The birds were singing

And our air was clean.

The years have gone by

And man is greedy.

There's not enough food

To feed the needy.

The Russians are waiting

And Reagan is here.

The war is coming

And there's plenty to fear.

What has happened

To the world.

Everybody's wondering

When it's coming

To an end.

There's more to this story

And more to be said.

If the button is pushed

There's nothing ahead.

What has happened

To the world.

Everybody's wondering

When it's coming

To an end.

If we can make it

Through this trying time

The world will be better

Freedom bells will chime.

What has happened

To the world.

Everybody's wondering

When it's coming

To an end.

The end.
