Christmas eve

it's Christmas eve in a small town
outside the snow is coming down   
the carol singers all gone home
sitting in this room all alone
with memories of other times
flowing gently through my mind

 

think I was about five years old
the room was dark the air was cold
my brother's lying  next to me
I'm wide awake  he's fast asleep
there's a noise out side the door
it's father Christmas I am sure

 

with the blanket over my head
I hear him  close to our bed
if I should pull the blanket down
would he drop our gifts and run out
that is something I don't know  
so I hold my breath until he goes

 

many more Christmases slip on by
but I never forgot that night
of course now I know the truth
but I won't tell it to you
boys and girls keep the faith
you'll get your gifts on Christmas day

 

well that was all so very long ago
now I have children of my own
so every year on Christmas eve
we'd  hang our stockings by the tree
go to bed and try to stay awake
listen for the sounds he makes

 

 he must be silent as the night
we'd wake up in the morning light
go down stairs the gifts are there 
under the tree and on the chairs
I remember that night long ago
when I was nearly five years old
