  2. Regarding latency, Presonus is a good one to go for since they also make recording software. In Studio One you can set up the sends on tracks to address the interface directly so that you have no latency whatsoever while tracking. You're monitoring the mic signals where they hit the interface rather than thru the software but controlling the level to your headphones in the software. Practical design - but you need to have a Presonus interface for it to work with Studio One as a DAW.
  3. Avantones are a remake of the classic Auratone speaker. They have a single speaker driver in each unit where most speakers have two to cover the whole frequency range (high sounds and low ones). The result is that they have a narrow range of frequencies which is helpful for making your mixes work on crappy portable radios but not much good for hearing whether the music is going to sound decent on a hi fi. One single Auratone was often used to monitor the whole mix in mono through one speaker cone. "Active" means there is an amp in each speaker so you don't need an amp. If you're looking for active small speakers you could go for a pair of Genelec 1029's on ebay. Or another good basic set although not active would be a pair of Yamaha NS10's.
  4. Hi there Envida If you're using a sensitive condenser mic the chances are you're going to pick up some crazy domestic noises with or without a reflection filter. They only reduce sounds coming from directly behind the mic. Ambient noises from other parts of the house are still liable to become part of the recorded signal - especially with quiet instruments like acoustic guitar. I'd go for sound proofing one room just for tracking in if I were you. Do you have a loft?!
  5. Darren - Are you working with other people? It's not just the technology that might be getting in the way if your process has become making every decision about how the full instrumentation should be. A compelling recording springs out as a performance coming from one place which is easier to do with voice and one instrument for one person. Once that process extends to fiddling with some plug ins and production whilst still writing the song it's not surprising that merry-go-rounds come into play! If other people contribute instrumental parts on your songs then recording is more of a snap shot of the performance again - like it might be with just you and and one or two mics playing the song. I think that's the first feeling to capture and share. All the best with it!
  6. I engineer in a studio and often work with people who've tracked at home or some other location and want to mix in a kitted out control room. Or also the other way round, tracking drums in the studio and giving them the audio to record other parts etc. It has to be said, mixing is more straightforward through real gear with voltages rather than digital bits that pretend to be! With recording, now that everyone has access to a certain level of technology there are naturally more options and recording music is an organic process where the best takes can happen anywhere. I think we should encourage this flexibility of working and let the music dictate what's best to do.
