Thanks, got it, sounds much better

I was just wondering how much pressure do you put on the strings when using the fret to play notes, when playing an open string sounds good but when I use the fret it sounds flat and dull, am I doing something wrong? At the moment I am learning from books and websites until a friend can give me some lessons.

Thanks for all your help, strap sorted and have tried to tune the guitar by ear, sounds in tune to me but will get a digital tuner to make sure (probably way out ) It's a start, just need to learn to play the thing now , Thanks again all of you.

I have just bought a guitar, my first one so haven't got a clue about them, and it came with a pitch pipe, could someone please tell me what this is and how it is used? And a really daft question now, where is the best place to tie the shoulder strap to? see I'm a real novice cant even do that
