Pick one of your favourite songs and dissect the lyrics. See how they have structured them, what they are saying, what kind of rhythm they are using for the lyrics to be sung. Then take a similar idea and using that structure, write your own story into lyric form. It could be a story from something you've read, or seen on TV, your favourite hobby, book or a song about a relationship. Pick something you know something about and something that others might be interested in hearing about.

Very helpful, thank you. It's a bit difficult to make direct comparisons because the songs I'm using as inspiration are not only not in English, but they're largely made of a conlang (that is, a made-up language), so the rules are different. I can write my own story in the lyrics well enough, but they just don't seem flexible or singable. I'll probably put up what I have after I make some tweaks and make sure all the parts are filled out.
