  1. For anyone worried about their gear and wondering whether to make the leap to buy a Power Conditioner this is quite a good article to tell you 'what' it does but not if its necessary :-)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_conditioner

Those who have them say they make a huge difference to their amp sounds, those trying to sell them will say the same thing of course!!

If you have a rack (like me) they provide a neat way to provide power to all your devices and you can be 'safe' in the knowledge that venues with 'iffy' power supplies wont damage your pride and joy, they provide neat slide-out lights and a "wow your rack looks really cool" effect from your audience, but are they necessary??

Personally speaking I DONT think so. Its a 'nice to have' but not a 'need to have'.

I've been using a power surge plug http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=35268 and a four way 20m extension reel for several years now with no concerns. There has been a couple of gigs (a marquee with lead-in power and a major hotel in ayrshire to remain nameles) where the power spiked, died and then 'bang' came back on again - the bang was the P.A!! Thankfully this plug acted as a gradual-return to power and prevented a sharp spike, which is the worst thing for your gear.

Something worth considering if you're playing anywhere these days :-) No venue will be held liable if the power spikes and your gear is damaged, its down to you guys.....

    Any comments welcome.

  2. Are you going to be bowing or using your fingers?

From what I can glean from players on the web bowing takes a lot of skill, some of the things to consider are -

    - bow speed

    - bow pressure

    - bow placement (i.e. where it meets the string between the bridge and fingerboard)

    - bow angle (should be perpendicular to the strings)

    - amount of rosin on the bow hair

    - tension of bow hair

    - a relaxed bow hold

    - relaxed wrist, shoulder, forearm and torso.

    - amount of hair in contact with the string, i.e. is the bow flat against the string or at an angle?

Failure to get any one of these incorrect can result in poor tone.

  3. It sure is!! I think Warwick are rippin the 'proverbial' a bit, I mean you can get single cuts handbuilt by luthiers, in the UK as well, to your own spec for far less than this.

You would think that mas production of a model would dictate a lower cost?? ehm....no..........

Options/luthiers to consider - http://www.rimcustombasses.co.uk/ or http://www.acguitars.co.uk/index.php (based in Moffat, Scotland). I've met Alan at ACG and spoken to Robbie on the phone, both really nice guys to deal with.

  4. German manufacturer Warwick have announced a new bass to its line up the Thumb Single Cut or Thumb SC.

Based on the popular Thumb model, the added wood in the horn apparently gives incredible sustain while adding extra ballast with the added weight.

Its a real looker but beware, with a price tag of $7500 dollars its time to start saving...now!!!

  5. I met him once as long time ago when he played with one of those session man bands. The gig was in a bar, and I had a decent chance to chat which was pretty cool. We're talking late 80s so it was more than a little while ago! lol

You lucky boy (then) you !

I'd love the chance to gain some of his knowledge :yahoo:

  7. Oooohhhh...Tech21 have gone and released a new pedal. Its called the Tech21 Red Ripper - cool name :-)

    tech-21-red-ripper.jpg

Its an all-analogue pedal, giving you access to vintage fuzz tones. Its responsive to how hard you dig in too, keeping the harmonics of your playing.

    IWOOT !!

  8. Hi all

I was just wondering whom (if at all) you've used in the past to repair gear.

I'm sure there are loads of guys (&girls) up and down the country who provide great service and value for money.

Personally I have used the following:

Flynn Amps - part of CC Music, Otago Lane, Glasgow. I took my Hartke Amphead here when there was some crackling from the volume pot. Capacitor replaced, general dusting inside and clean up of potentiometers and it sounded lovely when I got it back. Dead nice guys to deal with and took it off me at short notice too. £70

I hear the girls in Glasgow at Merchant City Music are really good at setups. Anyone any experience?

Moon guitars - Pollockshaws. I took my old Yamaha BBN5 bass here to get the nut replaced several years ago. Jimmy did a great job and from what I remember it didnt cost the earth either. :-)

  9. I have two. My main bass is a 5-string. The other one is my toneweaver, which has 6 melody strings and 6 bass strings.

Interesting bass you have there. Dug Pinnick from Kings X uses Hamer basses which are 8 string but doubles the note he plucks and octave up.

I play 5 string. Used to play 4 but when I started on 5 I never looked back. Love having the extra string to 'go down on'.

    :-)

  10. Dear all

Newbie to the forum tonight - hello out there :-)

My name is Graeme. I know John (admin - hello JOhn!!) from a few years back and he kindly invited me to post details of my video creation in here.

Marillion have a comp on just now to make a video for their new song Whatever Is Wrong With You (details at http://www.whateveriswrongwithyou.com/).

My entry is here - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=oLdWgKIVjNs

All is needed is a watch of the vid and the entry with the most views by Dec 1st will win the comp, the cash and be the vid to the song, cool eh?

There's 'a few' on You Tube already to get the idea but anything non-copyrighted is accepted.

Be grateful for your comments people.

    See you in cyberspace!!

    Graeme aka biskitbass
