  1. I want to amend the the flippant answer I gave early in this thread that said "Money/Chicks". The whole truth is I know I will probably never recoup the money I have put into writing songs. At 71, the only way I get chicks is if they think I have money! So, what am I in it for? I haven't given up on having more than 1 hit song. I love to write. It amazes me, at least, that I can put words together in a way that tells stories, or touches people. Testimony. I am a Christian, and though I don't preach to people, songs are my way of doing that. And again, applause, whether written, oral, or real applause, it is still the best drug on the market.

Sounds really great, John!  Good luck with your efforts and fingers crossed that something comes out of it for you and the young unknowns.  Looking forward to hearing the progress.

    Thanks Peggy,

I have been moving about quite a bit, now in Vlore, Albania, but learning I can connect to people all over the net just fine. I even had an internet streaming radio owner try to talk me into moving back to Nashville. LOL! I told him thanks for the compliment, but...

  3. Fingers crossed, but I just signed on to write all the lyrics for a young female country singer putting out her 3rd album. She is with the same producer who did her last 2, and he pays for all the studio time, musicians etc. I don't put in a dime. No, she isn't famous and you wouldn't know her name. I will share the songs once she is done and ready to publish them. I've written 5 so far, from scratch, to her titles. I have 5-7 more to go. will I ever make a dime from them, maybe but probably not. Wish me luck.

Update, I've written 12 and she's heading in to the studio this week.

I've also decided to actively pursue co-writes and cuts with many other young unknowns and so far made a few more connections.

  4. What people request in karaoke is a good example of peoples tastes today. When I go out and sing, which I do a few times a week, I hear Sweet Caroline, You Never Even Called Me By My Name, Achy Breaky Heart, and the like, ad nauseum.I sing tons of songs other people don't, and many they will never sing, and I rarely do them like the originals. I still make new fans every time I sing. I know musicians look down on karaoke, but it is what I can do onstage, without having canned tracks of my songs. And I am still an applause junkie.

Commercial? I played the street today, froze my ass off, made $8. I played my ASS off, and on songs people are supposed to KNOW. Maybe 4 people looked up to even nod acknowledgement in 3 hours. But most have no clue what music is, especially as performed LIVE by experienced, qualified musicians. If it doesn't come out of a digital toy it ain't real to these self-absorbed ignoramuses. Actual music would interrupt their drooling reveries---and piss them off, if they bothered to have ANY reaction. (How can you react to something your parents don't even know about or your equally ignorant 'teachers'?)

Ya gots to realize not many people out there today, especially the young ones, have no idea what it takes to make music. You are preaching to a crowd of people who mostly like hip-hop, rap, and canned pop. Personally, I can appreciate almost any kind of good music. I might now know how to make it, but like the art critic, I know what I like.

I have read good things about Band-In-A Box and have heard some very good songs made with it. They seem to have different levels or quality of paks they sell. Some are mp3 and some are wav files. I have though about maybe giving them a try. So far I always seem to get into something else and never do it. I did load up Baib a long time ago and demoed it. That was so long ago that I'm certain there is no longer much similarity to recent versions.

Funny you should say that John because I feel that way about people who won't work with someone who only plays music. I have written very few lyrics but seem to have no problems coming up with a tune :)

Everything is relative here. As someone with a bunch of sound libraries and a bunch of DAWs. Not to mention some high end plugins..oh and a pile of real instruments plus .............I have 4- 2tb hard drives full of samples libraries in my computer and another one waiting to be installed. I am still a bottom feeder. A small fish in a big pond. A guy with a small home studio in his house if you compare me to a mixing engineer who makes sound for picture. Those guys have master computers , some running VEPro and 7 slaves. 4000 plus track templates. Enough money invested in sound libraries to buy a new car. Compared to them I'm just an average Joe out there supporting the home studio market. The technical end of that alone is probably years of learning to get right. Then you need to find someone to actually pay you do do it.

Sorry I didn't see this until today, but I just sent you a PM.

  7. Anyone want to try this in "Country", Christian Country", or "Gospe"l? I have tons of great lyrics looking for a home. I can also send a voice only MP3 for tempo/timing/feel if anyone wants to have a go at this. I would offer vocals but I haven't found a studio here on Saipan.

It's now into March of 2020.

What might have changed since then?

The only one I have ever used is Band in A Box, not listed above. Yes I'm an "Amatuer" but I needed a way to bring music to my lyrics because so many musicians won't work with someone who is "Just" a lyricist. This gives me a way to put a basic chord structure to my songs with a style and percussion genre I think fits. Is it perfect, no, but at least I can show people a basic idea of what I want the songs to be. It is also how I got to record 200+ demos to share with many friends, family, and some new fans on the net. I'll more than likely never make any decent money at this but I have had a #1 cowrite.

DM Me Screenshots of you pressing Like and Follow on my YouTube Videos and a URL to your video or streaming service and I will return the favor!

I went there and it says you have no content. I also went to your Apple page but I like to hear full songs so I clicked out because I don't like joining a lot of sites. Sry.

I have never been naturally talented in music, but I am willing to try and risk the downsides. Thank you for reading this.

    Hi Areeson,

Before you can become great at anything you have to be passionate about it, which you say you are. Without the passion, practice becomes work, and maybe you feel you don't have the talent because it felt like work before. Everything I have ever done in life I have worked my butt off to be the best I can be. That is what you need to do. If you do that you will never regret putting the work in because you will know you gave it your all. If end the end that is not good enough, still you will have chased your dream. Good luck!
