Electric kits have come a long way, mostly in the last five years or so. I have an electric kit, a Roland V-Club, which is their bottom line. For my purposes, it's perfect. The nicer Roland kits now come with amazing mesh pads, and the modules come complete with mixers and plus the library of sounds. One of the other really cool things about the electric kits is that you can record with the module.

I don't if I'd but electric drums from the 80's...especially for sound. Electric percussion equipment wasn't so hot back then.
