I'm not sure where to put this thread, so the moderators can replace it if it's not the right place.
I just started to record a new song and I SUCK! It really sounds bad. I'm evan worse than before! I listened to a song I recorded a few years ago and it was better then this now (but still it's not evan avarage). I guess I have to use the plug-ins? Cause I record it from the keyboards through the microphone...Also, I can't seem to record in rhytham. For example, I record drums, but then the harmony is not in synch with the drums...I wanted to use metronome, but then it records the metronome also...how do you do that?
Just as an example of my suffering I'm gonna post the song I recorded a few years ago for you to hear. It's just the base (drums, harmony and a little piano) it still needs a lot of work (electric guitar, bass and vocals). I think it's not evan possible to figure out how the song was meant to be, but please help! Any suggestion would be good. I didn't put it in the critique forum cause it's not finished yet.
EDIT: Oops, this what I posted is a shorter version, without the piano!

Does anyone know how does the copyright law work in European Union? I mean, is there something like US Copyright office where you can register your songs in EU? I was surfing a little bit on their sites, but I couldn't find anything like that, only a bunch of documents and directives, especially not online registration...

Well, I used Cool Edit Pro 2.1 and it was great! Unfortunately, it's out of date now and I can't record anything on it anymore ( I don't know if that is because of that). The most important thing to me (an amateur) is that it has a good sound, that it has modern, simple, user-friendly interface and that it has multitrack option, because it's easier for me to record instruments one by one, then all together.
EDIT: Cool Edit is working! Yay! I just forgot to press the R button for recording.....oops....

I think they are talking nonsense, you're an artist not a scientist! Art is about free expression.

I checked everything....i don't know...to arm a track? what does that mean? No, it's completely dead....no track meters...

I have problems with recording on Cool Edit. With Audacity it's ok, the microphone works, but I would rather like to use Cool Edit because it's easier to me....Why do I have this problem?

My hands play the guitar while my voice sings whatever words happen to wash ashore from the stream of consciousness. "I" try to stay out of the way. That's always the first chapter for me - my Book of Genesis.

Very well said.

What's a soundcloud? I'm really new with this. I have only one recorded song, but I'm trying to do more....
-
Mostly I get a melody in my head and then I try to find lyrics to it, but sometimes I also give myself a theme, like " I want to make a song about...idk....homesickness" etc.

Hi there, welcome!

Hi! Welcome!

I was always very creative and was always making up stuff. As I kid I wrote novels inspired by movies I saw or the R.L.Stine books I started writing songs with 11. My inspiration were pop stars at that time. I was imagining I was a big pop star like Britney Spears or something and then I started to write songs for myself. It all started as a game. I evan had a notebook where I was writing my "tour dates" LOL. Then I noticed I was good at it and continued to write. In high school I started also writing poems which were more intimate then the songs.

Thanks, guys! What does vst stand for? I usually record drums with a sound on keyboards...but that's lousy right?
-
Hmmm... I'm less experienced with piano (I'm pretty new at this myself), but would invest in a midi keyboard. That will usually be compatible with the virtual instruments or come with them, which makes them infinitely versatile. If you want to record vocals as well, I would look toward a good condenser mic. I can use mine with any instrument and it works great. Also, what kind of software do you use?
I try different softwares, like Audacity, FL, Cool Edit...I'm not really sure which one is the best....

Hi LilOrange, love the avatar! Welcome to SongStuff!
Thanks!

What do I need for home recording? I've got keyboards, software Audacity and I'm planing to buy a microphone. Is that enough?
-
Well, that's easy, you create music first and then find lyrics that fit the music, but don't preoccupy with meaning. Just brainstorm words and focus on the rhyme and the sound of the words. For example "Do you want to be mine? Oh, baby, your so fine, I gotta cross that line and make you feel mine." LOL Although I don't know how meaningless that actually is?? It is shallow for sure. But, why do you want to make meaningless lyrics? I have a bunch of meaningless lyrics which fit good with the music, but I'm trying to make them meaningful now...
P.S. I think Anthony Kiedis is the master of meaningless lyrics!
-
I listen to all kinds of music, but I create mostly in pop music with little varieties. It's kind of natural for me. If I try I can write a rock or hip hop song, but when it comes to lyrics - I'm a sensitive female, I can't make angry or very dirty lyrics when I'm not like that. For example I can't write about gangs or "homies in the hood" cause I know nothing about it.
-
I write melody first, then lyrics. It's is easier for me to fit the lyrics into the music, then vice versa. But, in the last couple of years, my melodies became just so usual....I can't seem to come up with something original...

Sorry LilOrange for hijacking the conversation!
No, it's ok, I learned a lot You mentioned some other sites that have copyrights, which sites are these? ReverbNation? Myspace?
-
Yes, well, I really suck with technical stuff. I have no idea about the cabels and everything. How do you record your songs? I play on keybords and record it with a microphone on the computer. But, that sucks right? What abot those softwares where they have virtual instruments? Is that a better option? The thing is a can play only piano and I have no partners to help me with other instruments.

Oh, thanks, John, for your detailed answer, I appreciate it
So, you're saying that if someone say, steals my lyrics I can practically sue them and present this forum as evidence? Does that really work? Theoratically speaking....
