  1. If you had bothered to take more than just a cursory look at the DP-004, you'd know it not only has a mic/line input for your cheapo dynamic mic, it has it's own built-in stereo condenser mic.  You'd also know the DP-004 has been replaced by the DP-006, and that neither the 004 or the 006 has any onboard effects like reverb - which you might want if you'll ever add vocals.  You'd have to go up to the 008 for effects.

P.S.  It may be out of your price range.  But, you should also take a look at the Zoom H4.  As a digital 4-track hand-held recorder, it pretty much has it all - high-rate sampling, effects with mic and amp modeling (you may not even need your guitar amp), phantom power for external condenser mics, its own high-quality stereo mics - the whole shebang.   http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/h4/

Really? Not even a line in? lol

  2. you'll likely need an adapter to plug your dynamic into something like the 004, and I'm unsure if you'll get enough gain without a preamp to get a useable sound. unless it's one of those karaoke mics with a 1/4 plug on it... check out the zoom H4N, it has preamps on it, they're actually not half bad either. it's priced only slightly high than the 004 (at least what I'm seeing for canadian prices anyway...) I think the H4N also works as an interface if you wanted to do any commuter recording too. I've used one before with pretty good results!

  3. One thing I hear a lot of people talk about is waiting for their lucky break. Don't wait for opportunity to come to you, as a good friend of mine is fond of saying 'the harder you work, the luckier you get'. Working hard isn't enough though, you need to work smart too. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how hard you work either if you aren't working towards the right things. Sit down and write out your goals, how you're going to achieve them and set a time line. Be realistic with it, and when the first deadline comes up, re-evaluate the timeline (this should be a constant thing, timeline will always be changing). If you haven't met your goals figure out what happened and why it didn't work, if you did reach your goals think about any problems you met and how you solved them. You need to divide you the artist from you the business and put just as much work into each side.

  4. I have 6, 3 acoustics and 3 electrics.

The electrics are an Epi LP custom that needs some work... a Godin Freeway Classic and an Ibanez AFS semi-hollow. the Ibanez is by far my favourite, but they're all decent guitars.

The three acoustic are an Ibanez EW, a Crafter (don't know the model...) and an old Arthur Hensel Artist guitar from the 30's that I'm taking to get restored soon. The Hensel is by far the nicest sounding of the 3, and once the luthier's done with it I have no doubt the other 2 will probably be retired...

  5. I read about this, Shayne.  It looks like it was yet another hate crime, and that Scott was targeted because he was perceived to be "different."  It makes me sick.  It makes me angry. It makes me ashamed of my species.  When is this shit going to stop?  Does Nova Scotia or Canada have "hate crime" penalty enhancers?  If not, you should.

I'm not sure, but I certainly hope so. Some friends went over to the court house and waited around to meet the accused with rainbow flags and banners. There's a website set up with information and whatnot for anyone who's interested.... (I hope this isn't considered spam, if it is I'll happily remove the link....)

Edit* ((well, maybe not 'happily' but compliantly at the least))

  6. A good friend of mine recently decided to open an Art gallery downtown in our community. At 22 years old he's managed to organize (twice) an art at night event with no funding that completely converts downtown into a giant art exhibit. Friday night was opening night, and it went really great! The gallery was packed, we got a lot of donations in and even sold a few pieces from the exhibit.

However, later that night while out celebrating he and another friend of mine were assaulted. The other friend was stabbed in the back, severing his spinal cord, and had his throat slit. The guy who opened the gallery was held back and not able to interfere. The other guy is now in the ICU and is paralyzed from the waist down. I've known both of these guys for years. They're both unassuming, good people. Now one's in critical condition, and the other is in shock.

I'm appalled. These things just don't happen in small town Nova Scotia. It shouldn't happen anywhere. The guy in the ICU is the organist at a church. seriously, who stabs an organist? The cops have nabbed one of the perps... 19 year old kid. wow.

    had to vent.

  7. *snip*

Production and performance quality are not criteria in any category.

I find almost every songwriting contest says this. But how often do you hear a winning entry that isn't at the least decent quality production/performance.

  8. Shure Beta 58A is a great mic! the "Hallway" effect you're hearing is reverb, most DAW's will come with some sort of plug-in for it. Check out focusrite or presonus for some budget friendly, entry level interfaces. The presonus will come with a basic version of their Studio One DAW, which is quite easy to use.. not sure about the focusrite, but if you were to go that route check out reaper. http://www.cockos.com/reaper/

  9. Do you play that Layne?

Some day maybe. It's in desperate need of repairs, it sat in a closet for 40~50 years the neck is gigantic so it's in great shape, but the top is separating from the body and some of the bracing is coming apart. It's a beaut though, the pic doesn't do it justice... the wood grain on the sides is to die for...
