Promotion & Cross linking

I'm bumping this post a bit.. I've got a delicate matter I'd like to discuss!

My friend has recently started a company which helps local bands to record their music, and then he does all the mixing and mastering. We were talking yesterday and he thought that I should start a kind of promotional service which gives the bands a website, a myspace etc, and then helps them with getting gigs. The gig part is subject for another thread, but I started thinking about crosslinking when he spoke about websites. I'm gonna have each of the bands websites linking to all of the others, to gain ranking. Now, I'm not sure if I should only put up links to bands with similar music, e.g "if you like us you might also like..." or if I should just crosslink everything I can. I mean, if I come here with 5 websites and ask you to trade links, would you do that? How far can you take this?

Anything else I should think about when promoting bands online?
