Naah, different tunings than standard is only considered very talented to use

Tip: tune the low E-string down to a D so that you can play a powerchord just by pressing the same fret on all the three strings. That way you can change powerchords much faster, and also do pull-offs and hammer-ons with powerchords

Sure, I experiment with different styles, I might to a heavy metal lyric with lots of fancy words and imagery, and then I might write a desperate, more hardcore lyric which is more heartfelt, and then I might write a really easy-going and fun pop-lyric. But I can't use all of these in my band

I'm bumping this post a bit.. I've got a delicate matter I'd like to discuss! My friend has recently started a company which helps local bands to record their music, and then he does all the mixing and mastering. We were talking yesterday and he thought that I should start a kind of promotional service which gives the bands a website, a myspace etc, and then helps them with getting gigs. The gig part is subject for another thread, but I started thinking about crosslinking when he spoke about websites. I'm gonna have each of the bands websites linking to all of the others, to gain ranking. Now, I'm not sure if I should only put up links to bands with similar music, e.g "if you like us you might also like..." or if I should just crosslink everything I can. I mean, if I come here with 5 websites and ask you to trade links, would you do that? How far can you take this? Anything else I should think about when promoting bands online? (should I start another thread for this? )

I'm kind of new to recording, and I wonder why everyone seems to be using headphones? In-ear would be better when it comes to sound isolation, right? I'm mostly wondering because I only have in-ear, and I don't want to buy new ones unless it's really necessary. I mainly record vocals.

It happens The goal must be to give the artists the money they deserve, and preferably without having to tour non-stop. I don't have much experience with labels, but from what interviews with artists and so on say that's not really on the labels' agenda, since less than 5-10% of the CD revenues ends up with the artists. Therefore I think that major labels should be "removed", the question is how to do so without taking away all cd sales from the artists..

No, iTunes still have DRM on the files, so you can only use them in iTunes or iPods (from my understanding).

Sure is interesting reading! So is this: http://downhillbattle.org/?p=594 That is my one reason for not buying music online, I want to be able to download it and save it as a file on my computer. It's gonna be exciting to see how Spotify developes, if they're gonna have a DRM or not. Since piracy really can't get any worse, they might as well release their music as the consumers want it. I download almost all my music, because most of the music I listen to is released through small labels (or no labels), and I have no way of ordering CDs online. If someone releases a music store that lets me pay for a song, and then download it do my HDD, I'll sign up right a way (or at least in two months, when I can get my VISA ).

Since I saw the movie "300" I've been looking for a name for the singing technique or style the singer uses in the song "Message for the Queen". I suppose some would call it waling, but it's a special order of notes on special intervals, it's like a different form of vibrato or something like that. You can hear it in 0:09, 0:18, 0:31, then the flute in 0:42, and then the singer in 1:07, etc etc. Does anyone know if there is a name for this excersice, or a name for the singing style in general (0:50-2:05)?

The reason I "picked" these chords is that I know several awesome songs with them, I love the feeling, so I wanted to write a song with the same chords. One of the songs is this one: (Horrible video, don't watch it) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJDjuKjHEvM I didn't understand most of that theoretical stuff, I'm not very good at that, but I did get the point. It does matter in what order you play the chords, but mostly you can still go by feeling. I'm pretty sure it's an A# and not an A in that chord. As I said I picked the chords from a tab, I know how to play them but I didn't know the names so..

Say I've got the scale and the chords, and I'm working on the "order", when the chord changes are supposed to be and so on. E A D G B E - - - - - - E - 0 2 2 1 0 0 Aadd9 - 0 0 2 2 0 0 C#m7 - x 4 6 6 0 0 Bmsus - x 2 4 4 0 0 C2 - x 3 5 5 0 0 F#msus - 2 4 4 3 0 0 A2 - 5 7 7 6 0 0 (the reason I added how to play the chord is that I'm not sure what they are called, I found them on a tab but nowhere else) Does it matter in what order I play them, or could I just go by feeling?

Are there any golden rules, guidelines or tips when it comes to creating a chordprogression? I'm trying to write my first song at the moment, I've done lots of lyrics before, but I have never created a melody and music all on my own. Therefore I go by feeling only when I try to write a good chord progression, but it would be helpful to know some general guidelines

I have a storange room in connection to my room, so I usually record there. It's a mess fortunately, theres stuff everywhere, on the walls and on the floor, no flat surfaces here The floor is aslo covered in broadloom (is that the word?), a thick, soft and rough carpet. I suppose it's pretty good for recording, ironically I just have a regular SM58 atm, so I don't really need it

On the day of my 18th birthday I will probably stop filesharing altogether. I'll get a visa-card, and with that I will be able to buy all the music that I like from Spotify, where I can also listen to the music first to see if I like it. There are of course lots of greedy people who just download because it's free, but I mostly do it because I can't get the music I want anywhere else. Lots of bands have tried to put out a record online, for free, and people could just donate money if they wanted to. They made more money than they used to, because the label didn't get a majority of the money. When it comes to less famous artists I suppose you can't really trust in the moral of your listeners. I believe that we are in the middle of a reform, the only problem is that it in a way depends on moral and generosity.

I don't like this at all. I live in Sweden and I have followed the hunt for pirates for quite a while now. The sentence has put fear into the owners of lots of other filesharing sites, and many major swedish sites have been put down. I still see this as a defeat, once again the major labels have tried to fight technology instead of following the latest trends and making music (and movies) available where people want it - on their computers and ipods instead of in their cd-players and shelves. I suppose the labels are kicking and screaming so loud because they know that their time is ending, soon most music will be published online, and the need for labels is gone.

I'd like to learn more about putting a melody do an already written lyric, and possibly already made music too. I'd also like to learn more about cadence, but I can't hear if the syllables are stressed or not, unless it's really clear. Any advice or good reading, preferably online?

I think you could have themes, kind of like before, but not always topics. You could have a month for i. e country, next month could be a certain song structure or rhyming schemes. There could be certain feelings etc.

When I'm writing melodies I try to sing my lyrics to the music that my co-writer has made, until I come up with something that doesn't sound that bad.. I really want to learn some stuff about writing melodies, intervals, rythm, what makes a melody stick and so on.
