Church Modes

I was thinking back to my music appreciation classes, and came up with this off the wall question.

Anybody use the church modes for their writing? If so, any success with it?

I would jump at the idea of writing in a mode. Each of them sound different and some of them really cool. The ethnic fusion ground Delerium has a song called "Lamentation" of the Karma ablum that is in a mode and they drone on C but play in F minor I believe. Sounds very very beautiful. I would imagine that you could go to drop D and play in G and have like a drone 5th.

I looked up music modes, tried reading about it, and now I think you guy must be genius' to know all that. I can't even pronounch the chord names.
