Yep, the abundance of information on the internet demands you check the sources better - sadly, people have a tendency to believe what they read and at that the internet has become a breeding ground for hoaxes.

We who have been on the net for a while (since the start, almost) have learned to be sceptic at a default.

As for spyware checkers, I can reccommend Spybot and Ad-aware.
