A Sonnet Of Farewell

Recommended Posts

Tis a dark day today I curse my fate
The world is filled with dark eyes
I am alone and bemoan my state
Does nobody care or hear my cries
At last I feel I’ve lost all hope
Weary of lies and tired of life
The far horizon offers no scope
Yesteryear was absent in strife
I paint, I sculpt, I plant,I seed.
I wait in vain for the door to open
Yet it remains shut, ignores my need
Tis time to leave without some token
I say Farewell to those who knew me
The hour has come to at last be set free

The inspiration for this sonnet  was how I imagined "Helen Martins" local artist of genius, felt, just before she took her own life. On my recent road trip, I stopped by New Bethseda a little dorp on the way to Port Elizabeth and saw all of her amazing works of art that have been put into a museum and it impacted me deeply. Such magnificent works of art and such sorrow. She ended it all when she finally lost hope and at the age of 67 drank caustic soda.

Anyone interested can Google her and see her amazing works she produced mainly cement stone and crushed glass.
