All We Know Is

ALL WE KNOW IS  

 

lost to the years-words have been made sharp

that cut like a knife-the poison finally settles in

flowing deep- inside our veins- under our skin

we looked the other way- If memories should cling

 

our best laid plans-we kept them in a trunk

under lock and key- with forever-fallen upon deaf ears

once we lived as if only-to breathe-our one constant

when one door closed-a momentary pause- no other opened

 

so we stay non-plussed- unable to recognize

the miles that remained-being forced out-it was-you and I

we will not go down so easy this nuisance scar-bloodless

a heart beat away- all we know is-everything we never said     

   

reverberating to imitate-over and over-echoes of –two voices

heard through papered thin walls- we loved each other hard

followed by silence- a dripping sink-one fist through a wall

to get it back- the need for time –to lie in the bed- we once made

 

not to be- we lived and breathed-each other-in various moments

forsaking it all- then we let it slip away-like a few grains of sand

to be gathered at the bottom of a glass-where there is no escape

we once expected so much more of us-only to deceive ourselves

 

a singular night-a flickered light –to make a wish upon-this love as token

a one way ticket out-we recognize love remains tainted-time suspends

to be or not - upended- a pin drops- all we know is- this love’s taken for granted

it’s understood- we draw the line and accept- we never listened to our hearts
